What I was getting at is that a lot of sleeper sofas have replaceable mattresses (Link). So depending on your budget, you can be a little pickier about the style of the couch and still end up with a comfortable extra bed if the default mattress option is less than ideal. It's not cheap, but we have one and it's pretty fantastic.
It's absolutely impossible for me to sleep on an old style sofa bed, but this is a memory foam mattress, with a very simple mechanism to unfold. The best sofa sleepers are easy to use and as comfortable to lie on as they are to sit on. After a months-long search, we found three excellent options.
No specific sofa recommendations but I recommend buying a memory foam mattress topper to put on the bed when pulled out. We've done this for years (on sofa beds, air mattresses, day beds, etc) and it's made such a difference. We store it separately and put in on the bed under the sheet.
