Bubble Plate Vs Thumper

A thumper is a sort of cross between a single bubble plate and a gin basket, you get the benefit and drawbacks of both in one simple to fabricate package. Takes a while to get up to temp and in stable production, but can make for a lot of nice variations. Bubble plates used instead of perforated plates are a more efficient plate that works more like a thumper.

The vapors coming through the plate and being turned back on the plate heat the plate and the reflux from the plate above, but the vapor bubbling through the cap heats the liquid directly like a thump keg does. It seems that I have to run the still hotter to get it to work and as a result it doesn't taste as smooth or have as much flavour and doesn't taste quite like my stuff.

In an external still, the vapor is pulled from the still and into an external bubble plate condenser, where it filters through the various levels and is again returned to the still. Bubble plate stills are most often used in the production of stronger, higher-proof alcohols, such as brandy, whiskey, and rum. Do you make cuts with a reflux still?

A thumper takes vapor right from the wash still, and so doesn't require this additional condenser. Some traditionalists still use thumpers, primarily in the craft spirits scene. Colorado's 291 Distillery uses thumpers because that's how founder Michael Myers, a self-taught distiller, first began making whiskey.

Then we can talk about how to drive them. You also state "Putting Mash or higher ABV" You meant in the Thumper? Since that was the question or were you stating a higher ABV in the still? Because I thought the still sends to thumper and then the thumper distills a bit more as in a second run as plates in a tower.
