Roles are shown on the protective helmets that firefighters wear, on the collars of their 'undress' uniform as epaulettes and on the shoulders of their uniform shirts. I've noticed a couple of services down south (Cambs, Devon & Somerset, see below) have FF's wearing yellow helmets with single stripes on them like the old Leading Firefighter rank would. Is anyone from/familiar with services that do this able to shed light on these FF's?

The colors of the helmet, however, do have importance. Black generally denotes a private/basic firefighter, yellow or red can denote a lieutenant or captain, and white denotes a chief. Lastly, Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF) fire investigator helmets are bright blue.
