This is a clip from "The Chosen" series Season One: Episodes 7.NOTE, this video DEPICTS the meeting at night between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Jewish High Pries. Here in The Chosen, Nicodemus first says, "How can these things be," and then to help Nicodemus understand, Jesus draws an example from the wind. But remember, Jesus' reference to the water and the spirit and then to the wind was from Ezekiel 36 and 37, not because he felt a breeze.
But The Chosen must have other reasons taking interest in Nicodemus. After all, there are plenty of other minor characters in the biblical accounts that are arguably more significant in the story of Jesus. Case in point, The Chosen shows relatively little interest in exploring the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist, even though the biblical account leaves a lot of unanswered.
In the TV series 'The Chosen', Nicodemus is a respected Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin who is intrigued by Jesus's miracles and teachings. Portrayed by actor Erick Avari, his character arc is based on the biblical accounts in the Gospel of John, highlighting his secret night. Matthew struggles to reconcile the miracles he has witnessed with reality.
Nicodemus meets with Jesus by night. The dramatized story of Nicodemus is a challenge to us and our comforts, refusals, and excuses in the face of the radicality of Christ's invitation. Nicodemus is a prominent figure in the New Testament of the Bible, specifically in the Gospel of John.
He is important because his interaction with Jesus provides significant theological insights and is central to the Christian understanding of faith, rebirth, and salvation. We know from John 3 that Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a member of the Jewish ruling council, who came to Jesus at night. Nicodemus is mentioned three times in the Bible and only in the gospel of John.
Yet in spite of the brevity of his story we witness one man's honest quest for truth and understanding, and his encounter with Jesus, the promised Messiah and Lord of all creation. Nicodemus went by night to ask Jesus the most important question of any man's life - How can a man be born again? Jesus engages Nicodemus directly, using relatable metaphors to convey the transformative nature of faith.
The Chosen also portrays Nicodemus as more receptive to Jesus' teachings than the biblical account might suggest. Unlike the ambiguous conclusion of John's Gospel, The Chosen provides a more explicit, yet still uncertain, ending.
