Musical choices of young people - get to know the research results!
97% of young people declare that they listen to music, and for two thirds of young people it is an almost everyday way of communing with culture. 39%
Listening to music for pleasure is a popular form of leisure: two-thirds (67%) of teenagers say they do it at least once a week. Only 3% never listen to music. Activities that require more involvement are of course less frequent. About half of the respondents (53%) declare that they watch movies / programs devoted to music on TV or on the Internet at least once a month. A similar percentage of respondents exchanges music with friends or family at least once a month (50%) and reads about music in the press or on the Internet (49%). Buying music (CDs, music files or access to streaming services) is less frequent - around a third of teenagers (35%) declare that they do so at least once a month. These are the conclusions of the National Cultural Center survey *, in which young respondents (up to 17 years of age) were asked, among others what they listen to and what role music plays in their lives.
Respondents aged 15–17 are more likely to listen to music for pleasure than younger ones (72% of them say they do it at least once a week, compared to 63% in the younger age group), and they are also more likely to spend money on music. Parents' education is also an important variable: the higher it is, the more often their children listen to music for fun.
In an open-ended question about their favorite music, the majority (60%) of teenagers mentioned only one genre they listened to. About one in ten (11%) declared that they listen to various genres of music without specifying them.
When asked about the type of music they listen to on a daily basis, young people most often mention pop (39%), rap (22%) and rock (20%). Disco-polo (4%), classical or classical music (4%), dance (3%) and metal (3%) are much less likely to be mentioned.
It is worth paying attention to the large diversity of musical tastes: as many as 20% of respondents declare that they listen to other types of music on a daily basis - these were, among others: k-pop, techno, jazz, electronic music, reggae, r'n'b, folk or trap. A high percentage of respondents mentioning the species indicated by less than 3% of the respondents may indicate a dispersion of tastes or a confusion of terminology, making it difficult to describe one's preferences.
In order to better understand the musical preferences of young people (and also to be able to compare this year's results with those obtained two years ago), we asked the respondents a closed question containing a list of 20 musical genres. The list of the most popular ones is again opened by pop (60% of indications), rap, hip-hop (42%) and rock (40%). It was followed by dance music (31%), film music (21%), disco polo (17%), electronic music (17%), reggae (11%) and metal (11%). The other types of music we asked about were mentioned by less than 10% of the respondents.
