Efficiency in construction begins with preparation. To build a standard 2x4 corner, you will need specific lengths of lumber and a handful of critical tools. You will require three 8-foot 2x4s for the average height wall: one king stud, one jack stud, and the cripple stud. Additionally, you will need a full 8-footer for the top plate if the corner is not already framed. The tools that will make the process accurate include a tape measure, a speed square, a framing square, a cordless drill, and a hammer or nail gun capable of driving 16d or 20d common nails.

Then measure 4 feet from the corner along the other wall and mark that spot. Measure the diagonal between the two marks; if the corner is perfectly square, the diagonal will measure exactly 5 feet. If the measurement is long, the corner is less than 90 degrees; if it is short, the corner is greater than 90 degrees. Adjust the frame until the measurement is exact, then secure the bottom plate to lock the square in place.
