Quilt Using Baby Clothes

August 3, 2009 -Determine your block size and how you are setting them in your quilt. I picked a 4.5" block, with sashing that was 2" and squares between that were 2". You don't have to do a sashing and if you are low on baby clothes, mix it up with fabric bought by the yard.

December 31, 2021 -Similar sizes can be used slightly trimmed to fit into each row. Arrange them in a pleasing pattern. Then sew these pieces into a horizontal row (or vertical whichever you have chosen to do) the width of your quilt using a 1/2" seam allowance.

Iron the seams open. After all the rows have been finished, sew them together, iron all the seams opon and you have your quilt top finished. Applique: Adding a name to this baby clothes quilt can be done either by appliquéing the letters directly on top of the clothing or appliquéing the name on a strip of material and then incorporating that piece in when making your rows.

January 2, 2021 -I could hold on to boxes and boxes ... baby clothes when she has her own children? Apart from a few special pieces, no way! So i’ve saved special outfits for her to keep and basics/essentials for her future siblings, but the cutesy onesies and footie pajamas that are so quintessentially *Iya* in my memories of her first year.. I saved specifically for this project.

We’d like to have another, hopefully some time in 2015. Anyway, I thought of making a quilt out of my favourite baby (and not worthy as keepsakes for my grandbabies) clothes. February 4, 2021 -Organic sweatshirt fleece or various kinds of polar fleece can also be used.

Although I don’t often make traditional quilts, it is possible, especially with the smaller block size and smaller number of blocks. In this case we selected a dainty print and a shiny lavender accent to be the binding. I made a wall hanging using baby clothes as the leaves.

Once you have your widest strips pieced, trim down the remaining pieces to fit narrower rows. Once you have a nice arrangement, roll the strip and baby clothes pieces to move them to your sewing machine. Unroll and begin stitching one piece at a time.
