John Monash Science School (JMSS) looks for students with a passion for science, strong reasoning skills, and the ability to collaborate. The interview is your chance to show these qualities. This guide will teach you two powerful methods for structuring your answers: D-E-R for questions about your interests and motivations, and STAR-R for questions about your past experiences.

Deconstructing the D-E-R Method

The D-E-R method is perfect for questions like "Why JMSS?" or "What scientific topic interests you?"

It stands for:

  • D - Direct Answer: Answer the question immediately in your first sentence. Be clear and confident.
  • E - Evidence: Provide a specific, personal example from your life that supports your direct answer. This is your proof.
  • R - Reflection: Explain what you learned from the experience. This is the most important part, as it shows your ability to think critically and grow.

Example Application: "Why do you want to attend JMSS?"

  • Direct Answer: "I want to attend JMSS because I enjoy investigating scientific questions through hands-on, inquiry-based projects."
  • Evidence: "For example, in my Year 9 science class, I designed an experiment to test whether common household liquids were acids or bases using a red cabbage indicator I made myself. I had to research the method, prepare the indicator, and carefully record the colour changes for each liquid."

Brainstorming Your Personal Evidence Bank

Your evidence is what makes your answer unique and believable. Before the interview, brainstorm examples from:

  • School Projects: A specific experiment, research task, or presentation.
  • Hobbies: Coding a game, building a robot, gardening, astronomy.
  • Extracurriculars: Science Club, robotics competitions, volunteering.
  • Independent Learning: Books you've read, documentaries you've watched, or online courses you've taken.

When to Use the D-E-R Method

Use the D-E-R method when the interviewer is asking about:

  • What you think
  • What interests you
  • What you want to learn
  • Why you want to attend JMSS

D-E-R is best when the question is not mainly asking for a detailed story about something that happened in the past.

Use the STAR-R method for behavioural questions about challenges, teamwork, leadership, or mistakes.

It stands for:

  • S - Situation: Briefly describe the context. What was the situation?
  • T - Task: What was your specific goal or responsibility?
  • A - Action: What specific steps did you take?
  • R - Result: What was the outcome of your actions?
  • R - Reflection: What did you learn? How would you apply this learning in the future?

The STAR-R method is best for questions that ask about a real experience from your past.

Use it when the interviewer says:

  • “Tell us about a time when…”
  • “Describe a situation where…”
  • “Give an example of…”
  • “What happened when…”
  • “How did you respond to…”
  • “Tell us about a challenge, mistake, group task or leadership experience.”

When to Use STAR-R

Use STAR-R for questions about:

  • Do not use STAR-R as the main method for “Why JMSS?” or “What interests you in science?” Those are usually better answered with D-E-R.

Linking Your Experiences to JMSS Values

JMSS values collaboration, scientific reasoning, resilience, and curiosity. When you give an answer, especially in your Reflection, try to connect what you learned to one of these values. For instance:

  • A teamwork story shows collaboration.
  • An experiment story shows scientific reasoning.
  • A challenge or mistake story shows resilience.
  • A story about your interests shows curiosity.

By using these structured methods, you can provide clear, compelling, and thoughtful answers that demonstrate you are a perfect fit for the JMSS community.

Step-by-Step STAR-R Guide

Step 1: Situation

Briefly explain what happened.

Keep it short. The interviewer only needs enough background to understand the example.

Ask yourself:

What was happening?
Where was I?
What was the problem?

Example

“In Year 9, my science group had to present an investigation about water quality.”

Avoid giving unnecessary details:

“It was a Thursday afternoon in Term 2, and everyone was sitting in a different place…”

Step 2: Task

Explain what you needed to achieve.

Ask yourself:

What was my responsibility?
What did the group need to complete?
What problem needed solving?

Example

“Our task was to analyse the data, create a presentation and explain which water sample was healthiest.”

Step 3: Action

This is the most important part.

Explain exactly what you did. Do not only say “we.”

Ask yourself:

What did I say?
What did I organise?
What strategy did I use?
How did I respond?

Example

“I suggested that we first organise the data into a table, then compare pH, turbidity and dissolved oxygen. I volunteered to check whether our conclusion matched the evidence, and I asked a quieter group member what pattern they had noticed.”

Step 4: Result

Explain what happened because of your actions.

Ask yourself:

What improved?
What did the group achieve?
What changed?

“We completed the presentation on time, and our explanation was clearer because we used evidence rather than guesses.”

Step 5: Reflection

Explain what you learned and how you would use that learning again.

This is often the part that makes an ordinary answer become a strong JMSS answer.

Ask yourself:

What did I learn?
What would I do differently next time?
How would this help me at JMSS?
