What is Area? Finding Area of Squares, Rectangles, L-shape Figures, and Triangles 📏

Hello, young mathematicians! 👋 Today, we're going to explore a super important concept in geometry called Area. Imagine you want to cover a floor with tiles or paint a wall. How much tile or paint do you need? That's where area comes in handy!

Simply put, Area is the amount of surface inside a 2D (flat) shape. It tells us how much space a flat shape covers. We measure area in "square units," like square centimeters (cm²) or square meters (m²). Think of it as counting how many little squares can fit inside a bigger shape! 🧩

Area of Squares 🟦

A square is a special shape where all four sides are exactly the same length. To find the area of a square, we just need to know the length of one side.

The formula for the area of a square is:

Area = Side × Side

Or, you can write it as: Area = s² (where 's' stands for side).

Example 1: Finding the Area of a Square

Imagine a square tile with a side length of 5 centimeters. What is its area? 🤔

Solution:
Side (s) = 5 cm
Area = s × s = 5 cm × 5 cm = 25 square centimeters (cm²).
So, 25 little 1cm by 1cm squares can fit inside it! 🎉

Area of Rectangles 🟫

A rectangle is like a stretched-out square. It also has four sides, but its opposite sides are equal in length. We usually call the longer side the "length" and the shorter side the "width" (or breadth).

The formula for the area of a rectangle is:

Area = Length × Width

Or, you can write it as: Area = L × W.

Example 2: Finding the Area of a Rectangle

A rectangular garden is 10 meters long and 4 meters wide. How much space does the garden cover? 🌳

Solution:
Length (L) = 10 m
Width (W) = 4 m
Area = L × W = 10 m × 4 m = 40 square meters (m²).
The garden covers 40 square meters of land. 🏞️

Area of L-shape Figures 🤔

Sometimes, shapes aren't simple squares or rectangles. An L-shape figure is a good example. It looks like the letter 'L'. How do we find its area?

The trick is to break the L-shape into simpler rectangles or squares. Once you have two (or more) regular rectangles, you can find the area of each one and then add them together!

Example 3: Finding the Area of an L-shape

Imagine an L-shaped room. You can split it into two rectangles. Let's say:

  • Rectangle A: 6 meters long and 3 meters wide.
  • Rectangle B: 4 meters long and 2 meters wide (this part would be attached to the side of Rectangle A).

What is the total area of the room? 🏠

Solution:
Area of Rectangle A = 6 m × 3 m = 18 m²
Area of Rectangle B = 4 m × 2 m = 8 m²
Total Area = Area of A + Area of B = 18 m² + 8 m² = 26 square meters (m²).
So, the L-shaped room covers 26 square meters. 👍

Area of Triangles ▶️

A triangle is a shape with three sides. Finding its area is a bit different, but still easy! Imagine a rectangle. If you cut it diagonally from one corner to the opposite, you get two identical triangles!

This means a triangle's area is exactly half of a rectangle (or square) with the same base and height. The base is one of the sides, and the height is the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite corner (the tallest point).

The formula for the area of a triangle is:

Area = (Base × Height) ÷ 2

Or, you can write it as: Area = ½ × b × h (where 'b' is base and 'h' is height).

Example 4: Finding the Area of a Triangle

A triangular flag has a base of 60 cm and a height of 30 cm. What is its area? 🚩

Solution:
Base (b) = 60 cm
Height (h) = 30 cm
Area = (b × h) ÷ 2 = (60 cm × 30 cm) ÷ 2
Area = 1800 cm² ÷ 2 = 900 square centimeters (cm²).
The flag's area is 900 square centimeters. ✨
