WRITING ASSESSMENT

Persuasive Writing Task

Scenario & Context

Our school has noticed a significant increase in screen time among students, both for learning and for socialising. This has sparked a conversation among teachers and parents about the potential effects on students' well-being, concentration, and social skills. The School Council is now considering a bold new proposal: introducing a mandatory 'Digital Detox Day' one day a week, where all students would be required to abstain from using electronic devices like phones, tablets, and computers for non-essential schoolwork.

Stimulus Material

Stimulus
"From the Principal's Weekly Newsletter: 'This week, we are opening a discussion on a proposed 'Digital Detox Day'. Proponents argue that a weekly break from screens could improve mental health, encourage outdoor activity, and strengthen face-to-face friendships. Ms. Anya Sharma, our school counsellor, notes, "A day without digital distractions could help students reset, reduce anxiety, and improve their focus in the classroom for the rest of the week." However, some students and parents have raised concerns. Year 8 student, Leo Chen, argues, "It's unfair. Our devices are how we connect with friends, access hobbies, and even complete homework. Taking that away for a whole day feels like a punishment and will put some of us behind."'"
