In recognition of gender diversity among students, faculty and staff, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis now has designated nearly 70 bathrooms on campus as gender. Residential Life makes housing assignments by matching students who share the same assigned sex at birth and by reviewing roommate preference questions provided in the housing application.

Gender-Inclusive Housing is an optional process. When students opt in, Residential Life places them in rooms without considering each student's assigned sex at birth. This includes when empty bed spaces.

All new buildings will include some gender. About 70 of the Washington University School of Medicine's bathrooms are now gender-neutral, officials said in a statement this week.
