Store Cannabis Permanently In Mylar Bags

You have now dried your harvested plants and are very satisfied. The question arises: What is the best way to store the buds so that they remain fresh months or even years later and still taste like the first day? Of course, you can use mason jars. But to keep cannabis buds fresh for years, there is a secret weapon: custom Mylar bags.

Store Cannabis Buds Permanently

For cannabis buds to stay fresh for a long time, the temperature must be as stable as possible. THC and the terpenes on the buds are very sensitive to heat. Some terpenes evaporate at around 30ºC!

Therefore, the buds should be stored at low room temperatures. Approx. 20-22ºC is ideal.

The relative humidity (RHF) must be around 55-60%. It must be as stable as possible. This works best if the temperature also remains stable.

The containers must be airtight too. THC reacts with oxygen and is broken down as a result. Even better than airtight: gas-tight. Gas-tight containers let so little through that the number of molecules emitted can be measured there.

There must be very little air in the container. Air can absorb moisture. If the temperature drops, water deposits can form. This, in turn, is a breeding ground for mold.

The buds need to be stored in a dark environment. UV light promotes THC breakdown. Some terpenes are also sensitive to light. Therefore, light-tight containers are extremely important.

The material of the containers must not release any chemicals. Cheap composite plastics are known to release toxic plastics into anything that comes in constant contact with them. This ruins the taste and can be very harmful to your health.

Appropriate Containers For Bud Storage

Mason jars can be used for a maximum of 12-18 months of storage - after that, the cannabis loses a noticeable taste.

There are metal containers with vacuum pumps, but the lids can never be 100% airtight. Over time (after a few weeks or months), the container will refill with air, and the buds will lose flavor.

A humidor, known from the cigar world, is popular and also suitable for cannabis buds. They are not airtight but regulate the humidity in the box thanks to the high-quality wooden housing. Humidors are more for permanently fermenting cannabis buds.

Guaranteed Not Suitable

Plastic bags are not lightproof and will fall right out. There is a risk with cheap foils that toxic chemicals can migrate into the buds. Also, very few are permanently airtight - unless they are welded.

Aluminum foil is absolutely opaque but can never be sealed 100%. If you try to fold the foil really well, you may end up squashing the buds and destroying the terpenes.

You should be very careful with plastic cans. Even high-quality cans will release (albeit slowly) plastic chemicals, contaminating the flavor of the buds. Even the best cans (e.g. Tupperware) are not meant to be stored for months, whether weed or edible.

May I Introduce: Mylar Bags

Mylar bags are a real miracle product when it comes to long-term food storage. Mylar is basically a metalized polyester film and was invented in 1950.

In contrast to plastic vacuum bags, Mylar bags are not only airtight but also completely gas-tight! Once completely closed, almost no odor molecules escape to the outside. And that too for years!

Typical products that are packed in Mylar bags: coffee beans/powder, chips, beef jerky, dietary supplements, spice mixtures, etc.

In principle, everything that smells strongly (emits many odor molecules) and comes into contact with light, air and/or moisture would lose taste.

Mylar bags are particularly popular with survival fans who like to buy several kilograms of food and then seal it permanently. The military also uses Mylar bags to preserve food rations for years.

Unlike plastic bags, they cannot release toxic chemicals into the buds.

The core of the foil is made of aluminium. This makes the bags absolutely lightproof! At the same time, the bags are extremely durable and tear-resistant.

Mylar is great for freezing. Since there is (almost) no air left in the bag after vacuuming, no water can collect on the buds.

The bags can be sealed with a simple vacuum sealer + iron from the kitchen. So the closure is absolutely tight! After tearing, the bags can be resealed without any problem.

These advantages make mylar bags the best material to store weed.

Procedure For Storage

If you decide to shrink-wrap cannabis in Mylar bags and preserve it for years, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Cure or ferment the grass for at least eight weeks beforehand: This prevents mold from forming when stored in Mylar bags.

Immediately after drying, the inside of the buds will be very humid. This moisture would gradually migrate from the inside out, leaking out of the buds. Danger of mold!

Use a sufficiently strong vacuum sealer: Even a small, barely visible air gap at the weld seam can ensure that oxygen penetrates over time and the buts lose potency and THC! That's why it's damn important that the bags are sealed tightly and reliably.

Once correctly vacuumed and fully sealed, the weed is packed so gas-tight (we're talking industrial-level tight here!) that hardly any odor particles can penetrate the bags.

Once fully sealed, the bags can be stored in a cool and temperature-stable place. And that for years.

The vacuum, oxygen scavengers, and humidity regulators create a perfect environment that preserves the THC and keeps all the terpenes and oils in the buds sufficiently moist.

Even storage in the fridge or freezing is now possible without any problems. Wait at least three days after welding so that the oxygen absorbers can do their work.

If thawing, wait at least 24 hours before opening the package.
