  • Square origami paper (6x6 inches or 15x15 cm) in your desired color
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (optional, for precision cuts)
  • Glue or double-sided tape
  • Tea light candle or LED light (battery-operated for safety)

Choose the Right Paper

Using origami paper specifically designed for origami makes the folding process much easier. These papers are usually colored on one side and white on the other, allowing you to choose which side you want to display. If you're using regular paper, make sure it's thin and square-shaped.

For this project, we'll be using a 6x6 inch (15x15 cm) origami paper. If you're using a different size, you can adjust the measurements accordingly. Keep in mind that smaller paper will result in a smaller lantern, while larger paper will create a bigger one.

Create the Lantern Base

Now that we have our materials ready, let's start folding our origami lantern. We'll begin by creating the base of the lantern, which will serve as the foundation for our design.

Start by laying your origami paper flat, colored side facing down. This will ensure that the colored side is on the outside of your lantern once it's complete.

Fold the Square in Half Diagonally

Take the bottom-left corner of your paper and fold it to meet the top-right corner, creating a triangle shape. Make sure the edges line up perfectly for a neat fold.

Next, unfold the last fold you made, so you're back to a square shape. You should now have a crease running diagonally across your paper. This crease will help you create the base of your lantern.

Fold the Square in Half Horizontally

Now, take the bottom edge of your paper and fold it up to meet the top edge, creating a rectangle shape. Make sure the edges line up perfectly, and press down firmly to create a crisp crease.

Unfold the last fold, so you're back to a square shape. You should now have two creases running across your paper, creating four equal sections.

Form the Lantern's Sides

With the base of our lantern created, we can now start forming the sides that will give our lantern its signature shape.

To begin, take the bottom-left corner of your paper and fold it up to meet the top edge of your paper. This will create a new crease that runs vertically down the center of your paper.

Fold the Sides Inward

Next, take the left edge of your paper and fold it inward, along the vertical crease you just created. The edge should meet the center vertical line, creating a triangle shape on the left side of your paper.

Repeat this step on the right side of your paper. You should now have a shape that resembles a diamond or a kite.

Create the Lantern's Sides

Take the bottom tip of your diamond shape and fold it upward, so it meets the top edge of your paper. This will create the sides of your lantern, giving it its final shape.

Press down firmly on the edges to create crisp creases, and unfold the last fold. You should now have a shape that resembles a square with four flaps on each side.

Assemble the Lantern

With the basic structure of our lantern complete, we can now assemble it into its final form.

To begin, take one of the flaps on the side of your paper and fold it inward, so it meets the center vertical line. Repeat this step on all four sides, making sure each flap is folded inward and meets the center line.

Create the Lantern's Sides

Now, take the top edge of your paper and fold it downward, so it meets the bottom edge. This will create the final shape of your lantern, with four sides and a flat base.

Press down firmly on the edges to create crisp creases, and unfold the last fold. You should now have a flat lantern shape with four sides and a flat base.

Add the Finishing Touches

To give your lantern a finished look, you can add a few optional touches. First, take the four corners of your lantern and fold them inward, creating small triangles. This will give your lantern a more polished appearance.

Next, take your glue or double-sided tape and apply a small amount to the inside of your lantern, near the top. This will help keep the lantern's shape in place and prevent it from unfolding.

Light Up Your Lantern

With your origami lantern assembled, it's time to add the final touch: the light source. For safety reasons, we recommend using battery-operated LED lights or tea light candles instead of real flames.

To add the light source, simply place it inside your lantern, making sure it's secure and won't tip over. If you're using a tea light candle, make sure to place it on a heat-resistant surface to prevent any damage to your lantern.

Display Your Lantern

Now that your origami lantern is complete, it's time to show it off! Hang your lantern in a window, on a wall, or even on a string of lights to create a magical atmosphere. You can also create a whole collection of origami lanterns in different colors and sizes to create a stunning display.

Origami lanterns are a beautiful and meaningful way to light up your space, and they make wonderful gifts for friends and family. With this easy-to-follow guide, you're well on your way to becoming an origami expert and creating stunning lanterns that will captivate and inspire those around you.

As you continue your origami journey, don't be afraid to explore other designs and techniques. The world of origami is vast and full of possibilities, and with each new creation, you'll not only develop your skills but also unlock a deeper appreciation for the art of paper folding. Happy folding!
