Origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, offers a delightful and rewarding hobby for people of all ages. One of the most iconic and beginner-friendly origami shapes is the heart. In this guide, we'll walk you through a simple step-by-step process to create an origami heart, perfect for expressing love, joy, or just to brighten someone's day. Let's dive right in!

Before we start, ensure you have a square piece of paper. Origami paper, also known as kami, is ideal, but you can use regular printer paper if that's what you have on hand. The key is to start with a square base. If your paper isn't square, you can trim it to size.

Preparing Your Paper
To begin, lay your paper flat on a table with the colored side facing down. This will ensure that the design is visible on the outside of your finished heart.

Next, fold your paper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Then, fold it in half again along the other diagonal, creating a smaller triangle. Unfold the last fold so that you're back to a square shape, but with creases marking the diagonals.
Folding the First Pocket

Now, fold the top left corner to meet the center crease you just made. Do the same with the top right corner. You should now have a kite shape with two pockets at the top.
Reach into one of the pockets and pull the corners of the paper through to the other side. You should now have a smaller square with a pocket on each side. These pockets will form the base of your heart.
Folding the Second Pocket

Fold the top left corner of your paper to the bottom right corner. Then, fold the top right corner to the bottom left corner. You should now have a smaller kite shape with two pockets at the bottom.
Just like before, reach into one of the pockets and pull the corners of the paper through to the other side. You should now have a small square with a pocket on each side, but this time, the pockets are at the bottom.
Shaping Your Heart

Now that you have your base, it's time to start shaping your heart. Take one of the bottom corners and fold it up to meet the top edge of your paper. Do the same with the other bottom corner.
Next, fold the top point down to meet the bottom edge of your paper. This will be the point of your heart. You should now have a diamond shape with a pocket at the top and a heart shape at the bottom.

Folding the Wings
Fold the top left corner of your heart down to meet the bottom edge. Then, fold the top right corner down to meet the bottom edge. These folds will create the wings of your heart.
To give your heart some dimension, gently pull the wings apart, opening up the pockets at the top. You should now have a beautiful, 3D origami heart!
Adding the Final Touch
To add a little extra something to your heart, you can fold the top point down again, creating a small triangle at the top. This will give your heart a cute, little 'tail'.
And there you have it! You've just made an origami heart. This simple yet elegant design is perfect for beginners and makes a wonderful gift or decoration. Happy folding!
