Here's a list of materials you'll need:

  • Large sheets of origami paper (at least 15x15 inches or 38x38 cm) - you'll need around 20-25 sheets for a medium-sized backpack.
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (optional, for precise measurements)
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Pencil (for marking measurements)

Choose Your Paper

Selecting the right paper is crucial for creating a durable and visually appealing backpack. Traditional origami paper is thin and colorful, but it might not be strong enough for a backpack. Instead, opt for heavierweight paper or even recycled paper bags, which are more durable and eco-friendly.

You can also use old maps, wrapping paper, or even newspaper for a unique and personalized touch. The key is to choose paper that's large enough to fold into the required shapes and strong enough to hold its form.

Prepare Your Paper

Before you start folding, prepare your paper by cutting it into squares if it's not already. For a medium-sized backpack, cut your paper into squares that are approximately 15x15 inches (38x38 cm). If you're using paper that's not square, you can trim the edges to create a square shape.

Once you have your squares, you're ready to begin folding. Remember, origami is all about precision, so take your time with each step. If you're unsure about a fold, consult an origami diagram or video tutorial for guidance.

You'll need to create four identical units for the sides and bottom of the backpack. Each unit consists of a square base with four flaps that will be glued together to form the backpack's structure.

Fold the Square Base

Start by folding your square paper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Then, fold it in half again along the other diagonal to create a smaller square. Unfold the last fold, so you're back to a triangle.

Next, fold the two sides of the triangle up to meet the top point, creating a smaller triangle. This will be the base of your backpack unit. Set this aside, as you'll need to create three more identical units.

Create the Flaps

Take one of your folded units and fold the four corners of the base square up to meet the top point. You should now have a smaller square with four flaps extending from the corners.

Fold each flap in half towards the center, then unfold it. Next, fold the flap in half again, but this time, fold it away from the center. This will create a crease that will help you fold the flap into a sharp point. Repeat this process with all four flaps.

Assemble the Backpack

With your four units complete, it's time to assemble the main body of your origami backpack. In this section, you'll learn how to glue the units together to create a sturdy and functional backpack.

Before you begin gluing, make sure you have your glue gun and glue sticks ready. Also, have a flat surface ready for assembling the backpack, as the glue will need time to dry.

Glue the Sides and Bottom

Take two of your folded units and apply a line of hot glue along the edge of one flap. Align the edge of the flap with the edge of the base square on the second unit, and press them together. Hold them in place for a few seconds to ensure a strong bond.

Repeat this process with the remaining two units, gluing the flaps together to create the sides and bottom of the backpack. Make sure the base squares are aligned and the backpack maintains its square shape.

Create the Straps

For the straps, you'll need to create two more folded units, similar to the ones you used for the backpack body. However, this time, you'll only fold two of the flaps on each unit. The other two flaps will remain unfolded and will become the straps.

Once you've folded your strap units, apply hot glue to the folded flaps and attach them to the inside of the backpack, near the top. Make sure the straps are long enough to go over your shoulders and that they're positioned evenly on both sides of the backpack.

Allow the glue to dry completely before using your origami backpack. This will ensure that the backpack maintains its shape and that the straps are secure. Now that you've created a functional and stylish backpack, it's time to fill it with your essentials and hit the road!

Origami is all about creativity and self-expression, so don't be afraid to experiment with different paper types, colors, and patterns. You can even customize your backpack with additional pockets, flaps, or designs. The possibilities are endless!
