After the forming process, the paper is still wet, containing up to 80% water. The drying process removes this excess water, leaving behind a solid sheet of paper.

Drying can be done using several methods, but the most common is thermal drying. This involves passing the paper over a series of heated cylinders, called 'dryers'. As the paper passes over the dryers, heat is transferred to the paper, evaporating the water.

Contact Drying

Contact drying is a slower process, used primarily for specialty papers. It involves pressing the wet paper against a heated surface, such as a felt or a metal plate.

As the paper passes over the heated surface, heat is transferred to the paper, evaporating the water. This process results in a more uniform and consistent sheet, but it's slower and less efficient than thermal drying.

After the drying process, the paper is wound onto large reels. These reels are then sent to finishing operations, where the paper is cut, calendared, or coated to meet specific product requirements. The final product is then ready for use, marking the end of a complex but fascinating process that transforms wood into a versatile and essential material.
