[00:17.400 --> 00:22.440] 50-70 mana gusts, possibly quite widely across the country, even more than that around the [00:22.440 --> 00:23.440] coast and the hills. [00:23.440 --> 00:27.280] We will see you heavy rain as well to begin the day, easing to the south east for the [00:27.280 --> 00:30.880] afternoon, snow then packing into north west Scotland, but there will be the risk of some [00:30.880 --> 00:34.320] minor flooding from that rain, temperatures lifting a little bit. [00:34.320 --> 00:37.320] Temperatures will live further on Wednesday after a chilly start. [00:37.320 --> 00:41.040] Bright dry is bright as for longest to the south and the east but more cloud and rain [00:41.040 --> 00:44.680] and hill snorfor Scotland starting to push in from the north west later, temperatures [00:44.680 --> 00:46.400] are around 7 to 10 south. [00:46.400 --> 00:50.080] So a topsy-turvy week of weather, your five-day forecast are online and there's more [00:50.080 --> 00:51.080] later on the news channel. [00:51.080 --> 00:58.080] This is a highly volatile situation, we have to lean and it's getting wider. [00:58.080 --> 01:07.040] As far as we might conceive you've got destruction and devastation, it's been a truly [01:07.040 --> 01:12.080] memorable occasion, we're suppressing what would you have had to do to be captured? [01:12.080 --> 01:18.080] Of extremely tense here, right in the half of Athens, this is your humble day of my life. [01:18.080 --> 01:23.720] The United Nations World Food Program, say 10 million others in this corner of Africa are [01:23.720 --> 01:26.360] going to need their help in the next few months. [01:26.360 --> 01:29.360] This is the image of London and this flashed around the world. [01:29.360 --> 01:32.800] It was a day which changed America and the world. [01:32.800 --> 01:37.800] One fight to tell me that Marla Gabbapi said to him, what did I do to you? [01:37.800 --> 01:40.960] He said he took the decision for the good of the country. [01:40.960 --> 01:44.320] How we better off outside the hero, you bet we are. [01:44.320 --> 01:51.320] Extraordinary events, unparalleled coverage, in 2012, stay BBC News. [01:51.320 --> 01:53.320] Ah! [01:53.320 --> 01:59.320] A hungry time isn't it? [01:59.320 --> 02:02.320] Two firsts. [02:02.320 --> 02:04.320] Hello! [02:04.320 --> 02:05.320] How are you? [02:05.320 --> 02:09.320] Can you just give me one minute? [02:09.320 --> 02:12.320] Yes, I know! [02:12.320 --> 02:15.320] No, we're fine. [02:15.320 --> 02:16.320] You're busy. [02:16.320 --> 02:19.320] That's why renewing your TV license is easy. [02:19.320 --> 02:47.320] TVlicensing.co.uk [02:49.320 --> 02:51.320] The United Nations World Food Program [02:51.320 --> 02:53.320] is an international and international conference. [02:53.320 --> 02:55.320] It's a very important event. [02:55.320 --> 02:57.320] I hope that you all have a good time. [02:57.320 --> 02:59.320] Thank you. [02:59.320 --> 03:01.320] I hope you all have a good time. [03:01.320 --> 03:03.320] Thank you. [03:03.320 --> 03:05.320] Thank you. [03:05.320 --> 03:07.320] Thank you. [03:07.320 --> 03:09.320] Thank you. [03:09.320 --> 03:11.320] Thank you. [03:11.320 --> 03:13.320] Thank you. [03:13.320 --> 03:15.320] Thank you. [03:15.320 --> 03:27.320] The final countdown begins for London 2012, but there's a new warning about betting syndicates. [03:27.320 --> 03:35.320] Celebrations as the Olympic year gets underway, but the government says it's concerned about those who want to spoil the party. [03:35.320 --> 03:37.320] I'm very worried about it, and it's not just me. [03:37.320 --> 03:43.320] The President of the International Olympic Committee thinks that this is the biggest threat facing sport this year. [03:43.320 --> 03:53.320] Also tonight, grim tidings, Europe's leaders warn 2012 will be even more difficult than last year, but insist the Eurozone will emerge from the economic crisis. [03:53.320 --> 04:00.320] Fans to make subletting councilhouses a criminal offense, tenants who rent out their homes could face jail. [04:00.320 --> 04:06.320] The Duke of Edinburgh walks to church to join the other royals for a new year's day service. [04:06.320 --> 04:14.320] The King! He's round the go-kid right there! [04:14.320 --> 04:20.320] And Sundalans snatch it with the last dark gold against lead leaders, Manchester City. [04:28.320 --> 04:30.320] Good evening. [04:30.320 --> 04:34.320] Events have taken place today to mark the start of the Olympic year. [04:34.320 --> 04:40.320] The government of London 2012, Lord Co, said the games would show that Britain was open for business. [04:40.320 --> 04:44.320] But the dangers ahead were highlighted by the Olympics Minister. [04:44.320 --> 04:48.320] He warned that betting syndicates are aiming to fix the outcome of competitions. [04:48.320 --> 04:52.320] Sports correspondent James Pierce is in London's Trafalgar Square now. [04:52.320 --> 04:54.320] James. [04:54.320 --> 04:55.320] Good evening. [04:55.320 --> 04:58.320] This countdown clock seems to hold special significance this evening. [04:58.320 --> 05:03.320] There are two hundred and eight days to go, but one weight is over. Here we are now in 2012. [05:03.320 --> 05:06.320] Today there have been special celebrations on this part of London. [05:06.320 --> 05:10.320] A Olympic thing with the Lord Mayor's New Year parade. [05:10.320 --> 05:15.320] I should warn you that this report contains some flash photography. [05:15.320 --> 05:19.320] The dawn of a new year over London's Olympic Stadium. [05:19.320 --> 05:24.320] 2012, the year for which all of this has been built. [05:24.320 --> 05:29.320] In the centre of the city, the annual New Year's parade with an Olympic theme [05:29.320 --> 05:32.320] as a build-up to the games intensifies. [05:32.320 --> 05:35.320] Economically, the coming months carry uncertainty. [05:35.320 --> 05:41.320] But the message from London 2012 is that the party spirit mustn't be dampened. [05:41.320 --> 05:47.320] This is a country that is open for business and we need to use every opportunity we can [05:47.320 --> 05:53.320] off the back of the games to showcase the fantastic creativity [05:53.320 --> 05:59.320] our fantastic businesses, our artistic endeavour, our sporting endeavour. [05:59.320 --> 06:02.320] And most crucially, what we are as a nation. [06:02.320 --> 06:05.320] But many challenges still remain. [06:05.320 --> 06:10.320] In November, three Pakistani cricketers were jailed for their involvement in a betting plot. [06:10.320 --> 06:15.320] Today the sports minister warned about the risk of a similar scandal at the Olympics. [06:15.320 --> 06:17.320] It absolutely is a possibility. [06:17.320 --> 06:20.320] In the danger, the real danger lies in spot fixing. [06:20.320 --> 06:25.320] Just consider how easy it is to bet on something like the first short corner in a hockey game. [06:25.320 --> 06:29.320] Any team sport you can bet on an individual action or a carron. [06:29.320 --> 06:32.320] So you look at the number of team sports that there are in the Olympics [06:32.320 --> 06:37.320] and the threat, the real threat, becomes very obvious. [06:37.320 --> 06:42.320] This being London, one of the other great unpredictable, is the weather. [06:42.320 --> 06:46.320] Those taking part in today's parade, got soaked. [06:46.320 --> 06:50.320] Not that that deterred one Olympic champion, who's hoping that by August, [06:50.320 --> 06:54.320] still have another medal to hold alongside his gold from Beijing. [06:54.320 --> 06:59.320] I think what's most exciting about 2012 is not the fact that we can necessarily go [06:59.320 --> 07:04.320] and go medals, but the amount of enthusiasm that the country has for the Olympics. [07:04.320 --> 07:08.320] We've been competing for this Olympics for years, but it's really exciting to see [07:08.320 --> 07:11.320] the country sort of almost wake up and have that moment of revelation. [07:11.320 --> 07:16.320] In fact, the 2012 is the Olympic year, and we as a country are going to celebrate it [07:16.320 --> 07:18.320] and come away with some fantastic medals to do. [07:18.320 --> 07:20.320] The venues are almost ready. [07:20.320 --> 07:22.320] The year is here. [07:22.320 --> 07:26.320] The London Olympics suddenly feel very close. [07:26.320 --> 07:31.320] The organisers will hope that when that count and clock gets to zero, [07:31.320 --> 07:34.320] the weather is going to be very different than it has been today. [07:34.320 --> 07:37.320] We've had to rinse your rain through out the afternoon, [07:37.320 --> 07:40.320] but the organisers have done a good job so far, getting us to where we are. [07:40.320 --> 07:44.320] The start of 2012, with all those venues, pretty much ready for action, [07:44.320 --> 07:48.320] but as a sports minister has highlighted, there are still some very big issues [07:48.320 --> 07:50.320] to be faced before the game is going to begin. [07:50.320 --> 07:53.320] James, thank you very much. [07:53.320 --> 07:57.320] Eurozone leaders have given a gloomy assessment of the year ahead, [07:57.320 --> 08:02.320] exactly 10 years after Eurocoins and banknotes first went into circulation. [08:02.320 --> 08:06.320] The French President Nicholas Sockozy warned that the worst economic crisis [08:06.320 --> 08:10.320] the Second World War would continue to hurt households in 2012, [08:10.320 --> 08:13.320] while Angela Merkel said that for millions of Germans, [08:13.320 --> 08:15.320] this year would be more difficult than last. [08:15.320 --> 08:18.320] Stephen Evans reports from Berlin. [08:18.320 --> 08:21.320] Nobody's crying for 2011. [08:21.320 --> 08:25.320] The year of riots in Greece has built Scott tighter and tighter. [08:25.320 --> 08:29.320] And friends fell out as Euro tensions got tougher and tougher. [08:29.320 --> 08:34.320] And leaders got shunted out as voters got less and less patient. [08:34.320 --> 08:43.320] So, welcome 2012 with fireworks over the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. [08:43.320 --> 08:48.320] And the annual message to her people from Chancellor Merkel. [08:48.320 --> 08:51.320] She did not promise a happy new year. [08:51.320 --> 08:54.320] A hopper, vexed in the creeds of Susanne. [08:54.320 --> 08:57.320] Europe is growing together in the crisis. [08:57.320 --> 09:02.320] The path to overcoming this remains long and won't be free from setbacks. [09:02.320 --> 09:07.320] But at the end of it, Europe will emerge stronger from the crisis than it went into it. [09:07.320 --> 09:13.320] And in Paris, the fireworks were subdued, [09:13.320 --> 09:17.320] but a new year's glow shone over the Eiffel Tower. [09:17.320 --> 09:21.320] A glow in the gloom of the message from the President. [09:21.320 --> 09:28.320] We have to be courageous and we have to be lucid. [09:28.320 --> 09:32.320] What's happening in the world announces that 2012 will be a year full of risks, [09:32.320 --> 09:34.320] but also full of possibilities. [09:34.320 --> 09:41.320] The total full of hope, if we know how to face the challenges, full of dangers, if we stand still. [09:41.320 --> 09:44.320] There is a new year ritual in Germany. [09:44.320 --> 09:50.320] Everybody watches a remake of an old British comedy about a Duchess and her backler. [09:50.320 --> 09:56.320] This year there was a twist, a spoof with Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy. [09:56.320 --> 10:01.320] He was able to reach a triple-air rating, but now he is still in the Panchenchampagne. [10:01.320 --> 10:09.320] In real life, they are now linked together to save the Euro. [10:09.320 --> 10:16.320] They meet again in a few days' time to try to agree on greater integration of Eurozone policies. [10:16.320 --> 10:23.320] Even here in Germany, Europe's strongest economy, the forecast off a growth not much more than zero. [10:23.320 --> 10:27.320] Throughout the rest of Europe, it may well be recession. [10:27.320 --> 10:32.320] 2012 does not promise to be better than 2011. [10:32.320 --> 10:37.320] Germans take to the icy water in another new year ritual. [10:37.320 --> 10:42.320] Their government is not promising any warm-up of the economy quite the contrary, [10:42.320 --> 10:46.320] and that's bad news for every economy in Europe. [10:46.320 --> 10:50.320] Stephen Evans, BBC News, Berlin. [10:50.320 --> 10:55.320] A soldier killed in an explosion in Afghanistan was named today as Private John King [10:55.320 --> 10:58.320] from First Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment. [10:58.320 --> 11:03.320] Private King was 19 and from Darlington was killed in a blast in the Nahr, a surage district [11:03.320 --> 11:07.320] of Hellman Province on Friday. [11:07.320 --> 11:11.320] Council tenants who sublet their homes for money will face prosecution [11:11.320 --> 11:15.320] and could be jailed under new government plans for England and Wales. [11:15.320 --> 11:20.320] High earners may also be forced to pay the market rate for living in their council property [11:20.320 --> 11:22.320] in proposals outlined today. [11:22.320 --> 11:26.320] Political correspondent Vicki Young reports. [11:26.320 --> 11:29.320] Their pocketing money at the taxpayers expense. [11:29.320 --> 11:33.320] That's what ministers think of council tenants who sublet their property. [11:33.320 --> 11:40.320] Around 160,000 tenants move out and take up to a thousand pounds a week in rent from someone else. [11:40.320 --> 11:45.320] The government says it's a form of fraud to profit from accommodation that's no longer needed [11:45.320 --> 11:50.320] and they're promising to change the law to make it a criminal offence. [11:50.320 --> 11:55.320] It's not fair, it's not right. Hardworking taxpayers pay billions of pounds to build [11:55.320 --> 11:59.320] and social housing. It should go to the people who really need it, not people who are committing [11:59.320 --> 12:01.320] that kind of fraud and abuse. [12:01.320 --> 12:05.320] Many local authorities already tell their tenants not to sublet, [12:05.320 --> 12:08.320] but often the worst penalty they face is losing the property. [12:08.320 --> 12:11.320] In future, they could go to jail. [12:11.320 --> 12:15.320] Around 8 million people in England and Wales live in a home owned either by the council [12:15.320 --> 12:19.320] or a housing association, but there's a lengthy waiting list too, [12:19.320 --> 12:23.320] with almost 2 million families hoping to be housed. [12:23.320 --> 12:28.320] Ministers believe that making subletting a legal is one way to try and provide council homes [12:28.320 --> 12:31.320] for those who really need them. [12:31.320 --> 12:36.320] The government is also considering allowing councils to raise rents for high earning tenants. [12:36.320 --> 12:40.320] Those of the income over 100,000 pounds may have to pay more, [12:40.320 --> 12:44.320] although only 6,000 people are likely to be affected. [12:44.320 --> 12:50.320] But Labour say these measures won't do anything to tackle a far deeper problem. [12:50.320 --> 12:54.320] The reality is, the housing crisis is only going to be solved [12:54.320 --> 12:58.320] by building new affordable houses and grant shops as housing minister [12:58.320 --> 13:03.320] should stop re-enouncing things aren't going to make an immediate big difference [13:03.320 --> 13:05.320] and get on with building new houses. [13:05.320 --> 13:08.320] The government will consult on its proposal soon, [13:08.320 --> 13:12.320] but the housing charity shelter has called for bigger and bolder solutions [13:12.320 --> 13:15.320] not more tweaks to social housing policy. [13:15.320 --> 13:17.320] The young BBC News. [13:17.320 --> 13:20.320] The Archbishop of Canterbury has said in his new year, [13:20.320 --> 13:23.320] message that society is letting down young people. [13:23.320 --> 13:28.320] Dr. Rome Williams says the suspicion and negativity shown towards young people [13:28.320 --> 13:31.320] is driving them into unhappiness and anxiety. [13:31.320 --> 13:37.320] He said last August's riots in England were part of a much bigger and more serious problem. [13:37.320 --> 13:42.320] Iran has testified a new medium-range missile during naval exercises [13:42.320 --> 13:47.320] close to the Strait of Homus, one of the world's busiest shipping routes for transporting oil. [13:47.320 --> 13:50.320] The announcement of the test firing was followed shortly afterwards [13:50.320 --> 13:54.320] by Tehran saying it has successfully tested a nuclear fuel rod [13:54.320 --> 13:58.320] made from uranium enriched from within Iran for the first time. [13:58.320 --> 14:00.320] Nick Childs reports. [14:00.320 --> 14:05.320] Iran's naval forces show off their firepower, [14:05.320 --> 14:09.320] maneuvers at sea that look like a repost to Western diplomatic maneuvers [14:09.320 --> 14:14.320] to tighten sanctions on Iran over its suspected nuclear ambitions. [14:14.320 --> 14:19.320] This naval commander says Iran is able to defend all its coastline [14:19.320 --> 14:22.320] and hit any target at any time it chooses. [14:22.320 --> 14:26.320] In the midst of 10 days of exercises, it warned last week [14:26.320 --> 14:30.320] that it would shut the Strait of Homus if its own oil exports were squeezed. [14:30.320 --> 14:32.320] It may have backed off those comments later, [14:32.320 --> 14:36.320] but it's all a reminder of the fears for the oil market, fragile Western economies [14:36.320 --> 14:38.320] and stability in the Gulf. [14:38.320 --> 14:42.320] Iran straddles the narrow Strait of Homus, the mouth of the Gulf, [14:42.320 --> 14:46.320] the waterways, strategic significant stems from the fact that it carries more than a third [14:46.320 --> 14:48.320] of oil shipped by sea. [14:48.320 --> 14:52.320] That's one reason the US Navy has the headquarters for its fifth fleet in the Gulf [14:52.320 --> 14:56.320] in Bahrain. Britain stations are small, force of naval mine hunters there too. [14:56.320 --> 15:01.320] The decision to test a missile is simply to engage in some sort of [15:01.320 --> 15:06.320] brinksmanship to show that in the event of any attack they would have retaliatory capabilities, [15:06.320 --> 15:10.320] but it's also a gesture away of uping the pressure to make audiences in the west [15:10.320 --> 15:12.320] feel they should stay back. [15:12.320 --> 15:19.320] Iranian television also today proclaimed a new milestone in its nuclear developments, [15:19.320 --> 15:23.320] the production of its first fuel rod with domestically produced uranium. [15:23.320 --> 15:28.320] The images were meant to reinforce its position that its nuclear plans are purely peaceful. [15:28.320 --> 15:33.320] It's also hinted it might be ready to resume negotiations on its nuclear program, [15:33.320 --> 15:38.320] but President Obama has just signed a bill that could tighten US sanctions on Iran, [15:38.320 --> 15:42.320] even as the west ponders this mixture of new messages from Tehran. [15:42.320 --> 15:45.320] Nick Child's BBC News. [15:45.320 --> 15:49.320] The Duke of Edinburgh has joined the rest of the Royal Family for the New Year's day service [15:49.320 --> 15:54.320] at Sandringen. Prince Philip was greeted by hundreds of well-wishes as he walked to church [15:54.320 --> 15:59.320] just a few days after he was released from hospital, following surgery for a blocked artery. [15:59.320 --> 16:01.320] Mark Wehrthington reports. [16:01.320 --> 16:07.320] After more than a week's rest, the Duke of Edinburgh's New Year message was that he's now firmly [16:07.320 --> 16:09.320] back on his feet. [16:09.320 --> 16:13.320] Striding as usual at the head of the Royal Party, he made the short walk to the [16:13.320 --> 16:18.320] morning-sandering and church service to the sound of spontaneous applause. [16:18.320 --> 16:23.320] The hundreds of well-wishers who lined the route far more than normal, [16:23.320 --> 16:29.320] and all visibly pleased that just a few days after leaving Papworth Hospital, Prince Philip [16:29.320 --> 16:31.320] appeared to be in good health. [16:31.320 --> 16:35.320] As he came up, people were clapping and genuinely pleased and were all excited [16:35.320 --> 16:38.320] saying he's here, he's here, so I think everyone's really pleased to see him. [16:38.320 --> 16:43.320] I'd like to think I looked as good in when I'm 90, but he looked good, yeah. [16:43.320 --> 16:48.320] A very well-looking Prince Philip, yes, he looked really well, and it was nice to see him [16:48.320 --> 16:50.320] out walking. [16:50.320 --> 16:54.320] After the service, the Duke of Edinburgh emerged from the church to be greeted [16:54.320 --> 16:57.320] once more by applause. [16:57.320 --> 17:04.320] It was a show of support he clearly appreciated. [17:04.320 --> 17:09.320] The Queen may have made the journey to and from church by car, but by [17:09.320 --> 17:13.320] arriving and leaving under his own steam, Prince Philip was sending a clear [17:13.320 --> 17:18.320] message that his Christmas health scare is behind him. [17:18.320 --> 17:23.320] And the whole Royal family can now look ahead to the Queen's Diamond [17:23.320 --> 17:28.320] Jubilee year. Mark Werthington, BBC News, Sandray. [17:28.320 --> 17:32.320] On to football, Manchester City still lead the Premier League, but only on [17:32.320 --> 17:35.320] gold difference after suffering a shock defeat against Sunderland. [17:35.320 --> 17:38.320] Joe Wilson watched the action. [17:38.320 --> 17:42.320] For Manchini's Man City, 2012 promises the Premier League title, [17:42.320 --> 17:44.320] it's simple enough to say. [17:44.320 --> 17:48.320] Manchini's United's defeat to Thurkburn was a reminder of the dangers that lurk [17:48.320 --> 17:52.320] throughout the league, and here we've rejuvenated Sunderland should have opened [17:52.320 --> 17:56.320] the scoring after two minutes, Nicholas Begner, the squanderer. [17:56.320 --> 17:59.320] City rested their star forwards, well, some of them. [17:59.320 --> 18:03.320] They were still Edin Jekko, thwarted by Sunderland's keeper, [18:03.320 --> 18:07.320] the masked Minulee, with recently fractured nose and eyesight. [18:07.320 --> 18:11.320] Stale made Manchini added sparkle from the substitutes, [18:11.320 --> 18:14.320] aguero and silver both on, no change. [18:14.320 --> 18:17.320] City dominated possession, but time and time again, [18:17.320 --> 18:21.320] Sunderland kept them out with organisation bravery and a bit of good luck. [18:21.320 --> 18:26.320] A gold-estrosied well earned, until the third minute of injury time, [18:26.320 --> 18:30.320] and a young South Korean called G-Dong Roger. [18:30.320 --> 18:33.320] Possibly offside, no one cared in Sunderland. [18:33.320 --> 18:39.320] Teams managed by Martin O'Neill never give up, as Man City had just discovered. [18:39.320 --> 18:41.320] Joe Wilson, BBC News. [18:41.320 --> 18:47.320] Everton climbed into the top half of the Premier League table after a one-nil win at West Brom. [18:47.320 --> 18:49.320] With just three minutes of the game left, [18:49.320 --> 18:53.320] substitute Victor and Chubby playing his first games, [18:53.320 --> 18:59.320] four-gust because of injury, pounce on some poor defensive work to score from close range. [18:59.320 --> 19:02.320] In rugby's Aviva Premiership, struggling bath, [19:02.320 --> 19:05.320] beat London Irish by 33 points to three. [19:05.320 --> 19:09.320] The pick of the tries for the home side came in the 58th minute, [19:09.320 --> 19:12.320] when they ran the ball from inside their own 22. [19:12.320 --> 19:14.320] With the South Africa Scram Half-Michael Classes, [19:14.320 --> 19:19.320] we've finished off the move by going over in the corner. [19:19.320 --> 19:23.320] As we've heard today, marks the start of a big year for Britain, [19:23.320 --> 19:27.320] and it began with a spectacular fireworks display in London, [19:27.320 --> 19:30.320] the host city for the 2012 Olympic Games. [19:30.320 --> 19:35.320] The display featured 12,000 fireworks producing some 50,000 projectiles [19:35.320 --> 19:37.320] and lasted nearly quarter of an hour. [19:37.320 --> 19:38.320] Who is about any? [19:38.320 --> 19:40.320] Takes another look. [19:43.320 --> 19:46.320] Big Ben chimed in the new year in London, [19:46.320 --> 19:50.320] leading a magnificent fireworks display for which thousands [19:50.320 --> 19:53.320] have gathered along the banks of the 10s. [19:57.320 --> 20:01.320] The fireworks at Edinburgh Castle saw the longest ever midnight display [20:01.320 --> 20:04.320] put on for the Hogman A celebrations. [20:07.320 --> 20:12.320] Across the Ponder New York, Lady Gaga was at the centre of proceedings [20:12.320 --> 20:16.320] in Times Square with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. [20:22.320 --> 20:25.320] The celebration in Moscow was more muted, [20:25.320 --> 20:30.320] but red square lit up by fireworks was a breathtaking spectacle as ever. [20:30.320 --> 20:33.320] It was cold there, but in Brazil it was wet, [20:33.320 --> 20:36.320] though the heavy rain didn't put off 2 million people [20:36.320 --> 20:43.320] from seeing in the new year on Copacabana Beach in Rio. [20:43.320 --> 20:45.320] Back in London, it was wet too, [20:45.320 --> 20:47.320] but that didn't dampen the celebrations, [20:47.320 --> 20:50.320] which were welcoming in not just another new year, [20:50.320 --> 20:53.320] but the Olympic year with a bang. [20:53.320 --> 20:56.320] Louisa Baldini's BBC News. [20:58.320 --> 20:59.320] Happy new year to you. [20:59.320 --> 21:02.320] I'll be back with more from the newsroom at 10 past 10. [21:02.320 --> 21:05.320] Now on BBC One, it's time to join our news teams. [21:05.320 --> 21:06.320] Where you are. [21:14.320 --> 21:15.320] Hello, good evening. [21:15.320 --> 21:17.320] You're watching BBC News with me, Anita McVe, [21:17.320 --> 21:20.320] and let's get a little more now on the Olympic Games. [21:20.320 --> 21:24.320] We're just at 208 days away now from the opening ceremony [21:24.320 --> 21:26.320] and our sports news correspondent James Pierce [21:26.320 --> 21:28.320] has been in Trafalgar Square, [21:28.320 --> 21:32.320] where the New Year's day parade has been taking place with an Olympic scene. [21:32.320 --> 21:35.320] Behind me, you can see the countdown clock. [21:35.320 --> 21:37.320] Just 208 days to go. [21:37.320 --> 21:39.320] Here in Trafalgar Square in 2005, [21:39.320 --> 21:41.320] many people gathered to watch the announcement [21:41.320 --> 21:44.320] that London was going to be the host city for those 2012 games. [21:44.320 --> 21:46.320] It seemed so far away at a time, [21:46.320 --> 21:47.320] but here it is. [21:47.320 --> 21:49.320] I'm delighted to say a long side of us. [21:49.320 --> 21:50.320] We have an Olympic gold medalist. [21:50.320 --> 21:52.320] Hopefully a two-time gold medalist by the end of this year. [21:52.320 --> 21:54.320] And it's the only safe place. [21:54.320 --> 21:55.320] It's like a purchase. [21:55.320 --> 21:56.320] Thank you very much for joining us. [21:56.320 --> 21:58.320] And it's the medals we're awarded today. [21:58.320 --> 21:59.320] You should get one. [21:59.320 --> 22:00.320] You've come all the way from Oxford. [22:00.320 --> 22:02.320] Just for this. [22:02.320 --> 22:04.320] But here's the medal that really matters. [22:04.320 --> 22:05.320] Your Beijing medal. [22:05.320 --> 22:08.320] Try and put into words what it feels like as a British athlete [22:08.320 --> 22:13.320] to wake up and look at the calendar and see that it really is 2012. [22:13.320 --> 22:14.320] Well, you know what? [22:14.320 --> 22:17.320] It didn't really hit me until we saw the sun's fireworks going off last night. [22:17.320 --> 22:18.320] We sat at home, watched the TV, [22:18.320 --> 22:20.320] and we saw those fireworks going off the eye. [22:20.320 --> 22:22.320] And they're sort of the Olympic theme to them. [22:22.320 --> 22:24.320] And you just realise that there's only, [22:24.320 --> 22:27.320] just say, 2008 days to go and time to really get [22:27.320 --> 22:31.320] a winning training. [22:31.320 --> 22:34.320] There's actually a feeling different this morning being in Olympic here. [22:34.320 --> 22:36.320] I'm really hoping it's not raining like this in August. [22:36.320 --> 22:37.320] I'll tell you how. [22:37.320 --> 22:38.320] But no, it feels really special. [22:38.320 --> 22:40.320] It's a war with the being in a rowing boat anyway. [22:40.320 --> 22:41.320] Yeah, yeah. [22:41.320 --> 22:42.320] We used to walk to the boat. [22:42.320 --> 22:44.320] Hopefully when we came down from the sky. [22:44.320 --> 22:47.320] What do you now have to do? [22:47.320 --> 22:48.320] Obviously the day is getting closer. [22:48.320 --> 22:49.320] Only closer. [22:49.320 --> 22:51.320] Is it just a matter of training and training? [22:51.320 --> 22:53.320] Or is there a lot of mental work to be done? [22:53.320 --> 22:55.320] What's the secret to the success now? [22:55.320 --> 22:58.320] We can be good with one of the last of our championships, [22:58.320 --> 22:59.320] the one for that. [22:59.320 --> 23:02.320] And for us is about putting in the right work at the right time [23:02.320 --> 23:04.320] and making sure whatever we do is really effective. [23:04.320 --> 23:07.320] And it's not going to go too much to the long way. [23:07.320 --> 23:08.320] That's still more in a moment. [23:08.320 --> 23:10.320] But let's introduce this as well. [23:10.320 --> 23:11.320] Are you getting married? [23:11.320 --> 23:12.320] All of us is here. [23:12.320 --> 23:13.320] That's right. [23:13.320 --> 23:14.320] Two weeks after the Olympics finish. [23:14.320 --> 23:15.320] She's great planning. [23:15.320 --> 23:18.320] What's it like being engaged as someone who's focused probably [23:18.320 --> 23:19.320] isn't on the wedding right now? [23:19.320 --> 23:20.320] It won't. [23:20.320 --> 23:21.320] Maybe it is, but maybe it's just... [23:21.320 --> 23:22.320] I don't know if I'll let him up. [23:22.320 --> 23:24.320] I think he's been a lot of work to do. [23:24.320 --> 23:26.320] I'm happy to be doing most of the planning or stays away [23:26.320 --> 23:27.320] and on training camps. [23:27.320 --> 23:28.320] It's fine by me. [23:28.320 --> 23:30.320] Do you find yourself a bit of a sport in where they went? [23:30.320 --> 23:32.320] Yeah, I think I think was that going away [23:32.320 --> 23:34.320] in the four days' time on a three-week training camp. [23:34.320 --> 23:36.320] That would be hard as always. [23:36.320 --> 23:38.320] But you should get used to it. [23:38.320 --> 23:40.320] We've kind of got used to it by now, [23:40.320 --> 23:41.320] haven't we? [23:41.320 --> 23:43.320] It's been six years of the same routine now. [23:43.320 --> 23:45.320] So yeah, I'm really excited. [23:45.320 --> 23:47.320] The key question for you is that, [23:47.320 --> 23:48.320] is are you going to do it? [23:48.320 --> 23:50.320] You've done it once with your partner. [23:50.320 --> 23:51.320] Come on, Hunter. [23:51.320 --> 23:52.320] Come for it. [23:52.320 --> 23:53.320] You can do it again this year. [23:53.320 --> 23:56.320] I think the form we've shown us last year is [23:56.320 --> 23:57.320] if things go right, [23:57.320 --> 23:58.320] then there shouldn't be any reason why [23:58.320 --> 24:00.320] the opportunity doesn't present itself in a good way. [24:00.320 --> 24:02.320] Obviously, there's a lot of stuff to do to you now. [24:02.320 --> 24:04.320] And then injury and illness, [24:04.320 --> 24:06.320] committing which we should come out on top. [24:06.320 --> 24:07.320] I'm rowing really bad. [24:07.320 --> 24:09.320] It should be the strongest sport for teams you'd be. [24:09.320 --> 24:11.320] We have a fantastic tradition in sport, [24:11.320 --> 24:13.320] you know, throughout the year. [24:13.320 --> 24:15.320] We are the only sport that's come out with [24:15.320 --> 24:17.320] god-mattle at every single Olympics last two times. [24:17.320 --> 24:19.320] So it's really exciting to be part of that. [24:19.320 --> 24:20.320] And that history really spurs us on. [24:20.320 --> 24:22.320] We can be sitting down and start like knowing [24:22.320 --> 24:24.320] that we are part of, [24:24.320 --> 24:26.320] not only race success with team within Team 2B, [24:26.320 --> 24:29.320] but a race successful running team as part of that. [24:29.320 --> 24:31.320] And it's really inspiring to be part of that team. [24:31.320 --> 24:33.320] I don't expect too much of looking at the clock behind you, [24:33.320 --> 24:35.320] because I think what is going down all the time [24:35.320 --> 24:36.320] is getting close, [24:36.320 --> 24:37.320] but thanks so much for joining us. [24:37.320 --> 24:38.320] You've done a much better job than me [24:38.320 --> 24:40.320] of keeping your head dry as well. [24:40.320 --> 24:42.320] So from one Olympic gold medalist, [24:42.320 --> 24:44.320] back to you, Mr Dio. [24:44.320 --> 24:46.320] James Pierce there in a very wet, [24:46.320 --> 24:47.320] triphalgar square. [24:47.320 --> 24:49.320] Let's check out the rest of the weather forecast now. [24:49.320 --> 24:50.320] That's with Matt Taylor. [24:50.320 --> 24:51.320] Hello there. [24:51.320 --> 24:52.320] The system rain we've seen across. [24:52.320 --> 24:54.320] Eastern areas this afternoon will clear through. [24:54.320 --> 24:55.320] And as it goes, [24:55.320 --> 24:58.320] we introduce much colder air across the whole of the UK. [24:58.320 --> 25:00.320] Now that colder air comes with it, [25:00.320 --> 25:01.320] some showers, [25:01.320 --> 25:02.320] that cold air, [25:02.320 --> 25:05.320] chasing away the persistent rain we've seen in the east quite quickly. [25:05.320 --> 25:08.320] But Eastern areas do become dry and clear for a tie, [25:08.320 --> 25:09.320] but it's in the west. [25:09.320 --> 25:10.320] The showers will continue [25:10.320 --> 25:12.320] at the north by saying the Northern Ireland and Scotland [25:12.320 --> 25:14.320] that will become increasingly wintery. [25:14.320 --> 25:15.320] For all temperatures, [25:15.320 --> 25:16.320] very close to freezing, [25:16.320 --> 25:18.320] much colder than recent nights, [25:18.320 --> 25:21.320] frost and where the ground is damp, a risk of ice, [25:21.320 --> 25:23.320] that is more of a significant risk for north-west England, [25:23.320 --> 25:24.320] Scotland and Northern Ireland, [25:24.320 --> 25:26.320] whether it be winter showers throughout the day tomorrow. [25:26.320 --> 25:27.320] north-west England and Northern Ireland, [25:27.320 --> 25:29.320] and sleep, [25:29.320 --> 25:30.320] Scotland, sleep and snow, [25:30.320 --> 25:31.320] even to lower levels, [25:31.320 --> 25:34.320] mainly rain across southern counties of England during the morning, [25:34.320 --> 25:36.320] but they will gradually clear through a think for the most part. [25:36.320 --> 25:39.320] Eastern areas generally dry and brighter than the west, [25:39.320 --> 25:41.320] where the showers will continue through the day, [25:41.320 --> 25:42.320] but for all, [25:42.320 --> 25:44.320] it will be much colder day, [25:44.320 --> 25:45.320] particularly the breeze, [25:45.320 --> 25:47.320] for to seven Celsius at best. [25:47.320 --> 25:48.320] To restore it on Tuesday, [25:48.320 --> 25:49.320] more details than that online, [25:49.320 --> 25:51.320] and then half an hour.
