If there was one thing I could say to Hank, it'd be thank you. [00:06.440 --> 00:11.720] You're welcome. Hey, Hank. Life insurance you can use while you're still living. [00:11.720 --> 00:18.080] You are one lucky lady. Learn more from your State Farm agent today. [00:21.760 --> 00:25.320] Hello everyone, I'm Frederica Woodfield. Let's get right to the news right now. In [00:25.320 --> 00:30.400] the newsroom this new year begins with more suspicious car fires in the Los [00:30.400 --> 00:36.200] Angeles area. Officials said today the number of fires has risen to 39. Someone [00:36.200 --> 00:41.280] or a group is torching vehicles and in some cases those fires spread to [00:41.280 --> 00:45.800] buildings and homes including one once occupied by singer Jim Morrison of the [00:45.800 --> 00:52.320] doors. The acts we've seen over the last 72 hours here in these communities have [00:52.320 --> 00:56.580] kept these public safety professionals up at night working tirelessly. Since [00:56.580 --> 00:59.840] December 30th the Los Angeles Fire Department alone has responded to over [00:59.840 --> 01:06.280] 3,300 calls for service in the city. Police and fire officials are asking the [01:06.280 --> 01:10.320] public for information or surveillance video that may help them catch those [01:10.320 --> 01:15.840] responsible. A $60,000 reward is being offered in the case. And four Republican [01:15.840 --> 01:19.840] presidential candidates left off the Virginia primary ballot are joining [01:19.840 --> 01:24.880] rival Rick Perry by suing the state election board. They are disputing laws [01:24.880 --> 01:30.040] they say are unconstitutional. Michelle Bachman, John Huntsman, Rick Santorum and [01:30.040 --> 01:34.720] Newt Gingrich joined the suit yesterday. Only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are on [01:34.720 --> 01:39.480] the Virginia ballot. And Iranian scientists have reportedly produced and [01:39.480 --> 01:44.000] tested a nuclear fuel rod containing natural uranium. That's according to an [01:44.000 --> 01:49.280] announcement posted on Iran's Atomic Energy Agency website. If true, it's the [01:49.280 --> 01:54.920] first time Iran has progressed so far in its nuclear program. The state-run news [01:54.920 --> 01:59.480] service also said today the military test-fired medium-range anti-radar [01:59.480 --> 02:05.120] missiles today. The arrival of the new year did not ease tension on the [02:05.120 --> 02:10.880] streets in Syria. An activist group says at least 10 people died today in violent [02:10.880 --> 02:14.360] clashes between riot police and anti-government protesters. That's [02:14.360 --> 02:19.160] despite the presence of an Arab League monitoring mission. People filled public [02:19.160 --> 02:24.120] spaces across Syria again today optimistic that this year will mark the [02:24.120 --> 02:30.840] fall of President Bashar al-Assad. A huge blow for the handful of owners of the [02:30.840 --> 02:37.240] high-end hybrid vehicle known as Fisker Karma. The 239 vehicles on the road have [02:37.240 --> 02:41.920] been recalled because of a fire hazard under the hood. The maker Fisker [02:41.920 --> 02:46.160] Automotive wants to replace the batteries. This picture is of an older [02:46.160 --> 02:52.600] model. Sticker prices start at about $100,000. In just two days, the first [02:52.600 --> 02:57.920] real test of the Republican presidential candidates unfolds in Iowa ahead of [02:57.920 --> 03:02.920] Tuesday's caucuses. The Des Moines Register's poll has Rick Santorum in [03:02.920 --> 03:07.720] third place behind Mitt Romney and Ron Paul in first and second. Still the poll [03:07.720 --> 03:13.160] shows a large number of Iowa voters undecided. CNN's Joe Johns is live in [03:13.160 --> 03:18.000] Atlantic Iowa with the latest for us right now. So we know that Mitt Romney and [03:18.000 --> 03:23.120] Ron Paul have to feel pretty galvanized by that latest poll. [03:23.120 --> 03:28.160] I think so. I mean it's pretty clear that Mitt Romney is feeling confident. He's [03:28.160 --> 03:33.200] not saying that he's going to win here in Iowa, but he's expecting to do pretty [03:33.200 --> 03:38.720] well. The Ron Paul campaign is certainly very confident too, Fred, simply because [03:38.720 --> 03:44.040] they know that their supporters are very reliable. They expect him to show up. They [03:44.040 --> 03:48.040] think that their supporters are very fervent, and so that makes the [03:48.040 --> 03:52.960] difference for them as well. But Rick Santorum is probably the most interesting [03:52.960 --> 03:59.520] story happening here in Iowa right now, and that's because he's surging. If you [03:59.520 --> 04:04.720] look at that poll you referred to, he's in third place. It's all, you know, fairly [04:04.720 --> 04:08.800] tightly bunched, not within the statistical margin of error, fairly [04:08.800 --> 04:16.120] tightly bunched. But if you look at just the last two days, he is closer to second, [04:16.120 --> 04:20.920] maybe one or two points out there. So this is a guy who's been all over the [04:20.920 --> 04:28.120] state. You know, he's been here about a hundred different days in Iowa. He's [04:28.120 --> 04:35.720] done something like 350 town halls here in Iowa, and he's been to 99, all 99 [04:35.720 --> 04:40.960] counties in the state. So people know him, and he's a pretty good fit for [04:40.960 --> 04:45.720] them as well, because of his conservative views. And the way he talks [04:45.720 --> 04:52.120] to the voters is a way that they understand, if you will, a lot of social [04:52.120 --> 04:56.880] conservatives and evangelicals in the state vote in the Iowa caucuses. So [04:56.880 --> 05:00.800] there's a lot of hope there in their campaign that this surge means they're [05:00.800 --> 05:05.040] going to do very well, and that they will in fact get one of the tickets out of [05:05.040 --> 05:11.440] here to move on and expect some real momentum going into, say, New [05:11.440 --> 05:15.840] Hampshire and South Carolina. All right, and talk about hope, Joe. Michelle Bachmann [05:15.840 --> 05:20.800] is still talking that she's seeing victory because she says she won that [05:20.800 --> 05:25.360] Iowa straw poll, and despite what the polls are saying overnight, she still [05:25.360 --> 05:32.920] feels very confident that Iowa is going to vote well for her. And look, I mean, [05:32.920 --> 05:38.400] you can have surprises happen here in Iowa. This is a very authoritative poll. [05:38.400 --> 05:45.800] You know, it's very trustworthy and done by great people. That said, there are [05:45.800 --> 05:51.240] something like 41% of the people who are expected to go and vote say they [05:51.240 --> 05:54.880] could change their minds. So it's not written in stone that they're going to [05:54.880 --> 05:59.520] vote for the people they're supporting at this moment. And four years ago, there's [05:59.520 --> 06:05.640] some suggestion that something like 17% of the caucus goers actually decided who [06:05.640 --> 06:11.160] they were going to choose on the day of the caucuses. So there's room for, you [06:11.160 --> 06:15.560] know, some change here, and who knows what's going to happen at the end of the [06:15.560 --> 06:22.200] day. It depends a lot of times on the person who shows up and speaks for the [06:22.200 --> 06:27.080] individual candidate. And you know, things can happen at these caucuses that [06:27.080 --> 06:31.960] don't necessarily happen in a primary. So never say never for Michelle Bachman or [06:31.960 --> 06:32.880] anything else. [06:34.000 --> 06:36.980] What she wants people to say, right? All right, Joe Johns. Thanks so much in [06:36.980 --> 06:41.940] Atlantic Iowa. All right, so let's talk more about why Iowa is so pivotal in [06:41.940 --> 06:46.240] the Republican race. Or is it Carol Hunter, the politics editor for the [06:46.240 --> 06:50.040] Des Moines Register joining me right now. So Carol, let's begin, you know, [06:50.040 --> 06:54.000] with your papers polling showing a surge for Rick Santorum and third Mitt Romney [06:54.000 --> 06:58.160] and Ron Paul, leading one and two. How was that poll conducted? [07:00.640 --> 07:05.920] Well, we pull independence and Republicans and ask if they're going to [07:05.940 --> 07:11.400] go to the precincts on caucus night. So it's a poll just of likely Republican [07:11.400 --> 07:18.120] caucus goers. We pulled 602 individuals, so it's a big sample size. But still, [07:18.120 --> 07:22.240] our pollster and seltzer will tell you there are all sorts of factors that [07:22.240 --> 07:26.120] make a polling for the caucus is very tricky. And there are all sorts of [07:26.120 --> 07:30.120] factors that come into whether people show up for that caucus. We can see [07:30.120 --> 07:34.120] right there. It's extremely windy. There have been some pretty severe winds [07:34.120 --> 07:38.220] throughout today. Now let's look at the forecast. What is Tuesday hold and how [07:38.220 --> 07:43.260] might those big winds or cold temperatures impact who shows up for [07:43.260 --> 07:44.040] the caucuses? [07:44.040 --> 07:49.240] Well, all of a sudden, it feels like January in Iowa. We had had some fairly [07:49.240 --> 07:55.680] warm weather, but now, um, it does come down to getting those caucus goers out [07:55.680 --> 08:00.560] on Tuesday night. The general rule of thumb is thought that if it's really bad [08:00.560 --> 08:06.320] weather that that Ron Paul might benefit because he does have this very loyal [08:06.320 --> 08:10.920] group of followers, but you can bet that all of the campaigns are out making [08:10.920 --> 08:17.320] their final touches. We've liked to have said that the final week here is the [08:17.320 --> 08:23.320] sprint. Well, this day and caucus day is the lunch. It's about touching caucus [08:23.320 --> 08:28.000] goers, calling them, having an eye, another Iowa and call them and ask them [08:28.000 --> 08:31.560] to get there on caucus night. Well, you and I spoke earlier and you talked [08:31.560 --> 08:36.880] about how this caucus traditionally is one that kind of whittles the feel. Is [08:36.880 --> 08:42.080] that still the feeling that this will go as conventional wisdom has gone for [08:42.080 --> 08:42.800] Iowa caucuses? [08:45.680 --> 08:50.280] Yes, I think it's very tough if you fall out of that top three or especially [08:50.280 --> 08:56.400] for to go forward with much confidence. The money dries up for one thing. The [08:56.400 --> 09:01.200] money starts flowing to the people who do the best. So as much as confidence [09:01.200 --> 09:08.600] as someone like a Michelle Bachman does express and as they say, you don't rule [09:08.600 --> 09:12.720] anything out with the caucuses until caucus night. The votes are counted. It's [09:12.720 --> 09:18.720] hard to foresee her doing well if she comes in in sixth place. Wow. All right. [09:18.720 --> 09:23.480] Carol Hunter. Thanks so much for braving the conditions out there from the Des [09:23.480 --> 09:26.600] Moines Register as politics editor. Appreciate that and all the best come [09:26.600 --> 09:32.280] Tuesday for the big caucus day are in a dangerous start to the new year. Cars [09:32.280 --> 09:37.160] are being torched in the Los Angeles area. Pleased to blame and why we talked [09:37.160 --> 10:00.640] alive to the city's supervisor next. Someone or group is [12:14.680 --> 12:19.480] setting parked cars on fire. Today, city officials said the number of fires has [12:19.480 --> 12:25.560] risen to 39 since Friday, but not just cars have burned buildings and homes, [12:25.560 --> 12:29.760] including one once occupied by singer Jim Morrison of the doors. [12:31.440 --> 12:35.820] In a general sense, most of these fires have started as result of something that [12:35.820 --> 12:41.320] ignites a vehicle fire next to a structure in certain cases. So we are [12:41.320 --> 12:46.880] seeing auto fires as one of the primary, uh, incendiary items that happens first. [12:46.880 --> 12:50.000] So that's what we're looking for. But that doesn't mean that's the only thing [12:50.000 --> 12:53.160] out there. And just like we're keeping our eyes on these communities, there's [12:53.160 --> 12:55.880] other communities out there they're watching for. So most of these have [12:55.880 --> 13:00.000] been auto fires that have led or exposed onto an apartment building, and [13:00.000 --> 13:03.120] that's where there's a lot of our biggest threat. They are working on [13:03.120 --> 13:07.960] hundreds of clues, interviewing dozens of witnesses, picking up countless [13:07.960 --> 13:12.040] pieces of evidence and working together in a coordinated effort to try and [13:12.040 --> 13:15.760] solve this problem and to work with the arson investigators who are our lead, [13:16.000 --> 13:19.520] um, to solve this problem and to catch this guy and put him in custody. [13:20.500 --> 13:23.440] Right. A frightening situation. Joining me right now, Los Angeles County [13:23.440 --> 13:30.800] Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. So Zev, is there surveillance video anywhere that [13:30.800 --> 13:33.120] just might help you find a suspect or two? [13:34.520 --> 13:37.760] Well, my understanding is that there is some surveillance video. I don't know [13:37.760 --> 13:42.200] to what extent it's helped. It can't hurt. Uh, there are a lot of leads [13:42.200 --> 13:46.200] being processed by the arson task force, which is made up of the County [13:46.200 --> 13:49.240] Sheriff's Department and the L. A. Police Department and the alcohol, [13:49.240 --> 13:52.720] tobacco and firearms folks. They're going to catch this guy or these [13:52.720 --> 13:56.560] people. There is no question in my mind about it. It's just a matter of time, [13:56.560 --> 14:00.960] and the sooner the better. This guy right now has been an arsonist. But if [14:00.960 --> 14:05.120] somebody gets hurt or killed, suddenly that becomes attempted murder or [14:05.120 --> 14:09.040] murder. So this this arsonist or arsonist would be well advised to [14:09.040 --> 14:11.920] knock it off and turn himself in because he's going to do some hard time. [14:11.920 --> 14:15.920] Very hard time. So besides the fact that they are cars being targeted, [14:15.920 --> 14:19.360] is there a common thread here? Types of vehicles, the way in which they're [14:19.360 --> 14:21.160] parked, the types of neighborhoods? [14:22.720 --> 14:26.760] Well, I don't want to get into any detail, but I think it's common [14:26.760 --> 14:31.120] knowledge that the most common detail is that these cars are parked. Most [14:31.120 --> 14:35.480] of them are parked in ground level parking garages with an apartment [14:35.480 --> 14:40.160] building that overhangs the garage. So they light the fire in the car and [14:40.160 --> 14:44.640] the flames then rise to the second floor. And in several cases have [14:44.640 --> 14:47.360] engulfed the apartment buildings involved. Fortunately, no one has been [14:47.360 --> 14:51.440] hurt or killed to this point. But I think that's just a matter of luck. [14:51.440 --> 14:54.280] People are being very vigilant in the communities. The communities in [14:54.280 --> 14:58.880] question are very dense communities, apartment houses. There's not a lot of [14:58.880 --> 15:03.320] room, so the fire gets through the car and into the building, and you're [15:03.320 --> 15:07.640] in a conflagration. But people are being very, very vigilant, and we're [15:07.640 --> 15:11.040] asking people to be vigilant. If they see any suspicious activity around [15:11.560 --> 15:16.880] a car or parking garage, to call 911 immediately. And if anyone has any [15:16.880 --> 15:20.160] information that they want to share with law enforcement, the Arson Task [15:20.160 --> 15:27.560] Force, to call 1-800-222-8477. It's 222-TIPS. They will take your [15:27.560 --> 15:32.200] information anonymously and process it. Again, I say I think they're making [15:32.200 --> 15:36.440] progress, and I have no doubt in my mind that the person or persons involved [15:36.440 --> 15:40.280] in this are going to be apprehended soon enough. Okay, so one more time that [15:40.280 --> 15:47.040] tip line, 1-800-222-8477. Are there at least any eyewitnesses that have [15:47.040 --> 15:53.360] given you any general descriptions of who may be behind this? [15:53.360 --> 15:59.360] I'm not aware, personally, of that, but the Arson Task Force, I'm sure, I know, [15:59.360 --> 16:02.800] is processing every lead. They have an unprecedented number of detectives and [16:02.800 --> 16:06.520] investigators working on this right now. The volume of calls in the fire [16:06.520 --> 16:10.520] department over the last 72 hours has increased 17% over the same period last [16:10.520 --> 16:14.920] year. It gives you an idea of what the workload is. So they're working 24 [16:14.920 --> 16:19.080] hours, and they're going to break this case. These are the best in the [16:19.080 --> 16:23.840] business. All right. Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, thanks so [16:23.840 --> 16:27.960] much for your time, and all the best, and best of luck in your investigation. Happy [16:27.960 --> 16:33.960] New Year to you. So from California to Hawaii, the new year begins with new laws [16:33.960 --> 16:38.800] that could affect the way all of us vote. [21:25.440 --> 21:29.840] The situation with Wolf Blitzer Monday afternoon at four Eastern on CNN [21:33.560 --> 21:38.040] and this just into CNN. We want to bring you CNN has just confirmed that a U.S. [21:38.040 --> 21:42.180] Forest Service ranger at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state has [21:42.180 --> 21:46.440] been shot and killed. Still unclear the circumstances of what took place, [21:46.440 --> 21:50.760] according to the park spokesperson. However, the gunman is still at large [21:50.760 --> 21:53.720] will bring you up to date when we get more information about that [21:53.720 --> 21:56.280] investigation unfolding right now. [21:57.360 --> 22:01.080] Meantime, the Sunday talk shows were wall to wall with the Republican [22:01.080 --> 22:06.360] candidates giving their final pitches before Tuesday's Iowa caucuses. Take a [22:06.360 --> 22:16.440] listen and look. What do you think the appeal is there with Rick Santorum? Why [22:16.440 --> 22:22.480] has he suddenly become kind of the person to watch? Well, maybe it's the [22:22.480 --> 22:25.040] people who just got frustrated with the other ones and they're just shifting [22:25.040 --> 22:28.000] their views. That's one thing you can't say about my supporters. They don't [22:28.000 --> 22:31.980] shift their views. I'm the strongest core conservative in this race. There [22:31.980 --> 22:36.920] is no comparison with all of the other candidates and my credentials. No other [22:36.920 --> 22:41.720] candidate has current national security experience in the race. I sit on the [22:41.720 --> 22:46.120] House Intelligence Committee. I am daily involved with the issue of national [22:46.120 --> 22:51.060] security. No other candidate is. Why should those voters caucus for you [22:51.060 --> 22:55.720] Tuesday night and not for Rick Santorum? I'm not just focused on that set of [22:55.740 --> 22:59.600] voters. We're reaching out to everyone who wants to see America back working [22:59.600 --> 23:03.280] again, and I've got a track record of doing it. My surge is going to come on [23:03.280 --> 23:07.980] January 3rd after the people of Iowa do what they do, which is actually analyze [23:07.980 --> 23:12.200] the candidates, figure out where their positions are, find out who's the [23:12.200 --> 23:15.960] right leader, who's got what it takes to defeat Barack Obama and to lead [23:15.960 --> 23:16.640] this country. [23:21.600 --> 23:26.840] I'm wondering if some of these attacks on you that have been out there for [23:26.840 --> 23:31.440] the past 10 days have given you any pause about staying inside the Republican [23:31.440 --> 23:35.120] Party. I haven't even thought about it except when people like you keep asking [23:35.120 --> 23:39.480] me about it because I have a race going on. I'm essentially tied for first place. [23:39.480 --> 23:45.360] And why would I even consider doing anything like that? So but I don't like [23:45.360 --> 23:49.840] absolutes. I don't want to say I will never do so. And so your Iowa state [23:49.840 --> 23:54.200] chair, Ken Sorensen, a state senator here, jumped ship, went to work last [23:54.200 --> 24:01.120] Wednesday for Ron Paul. You claim that he told you that it was about money. But [24:01.120 --> 24:04.680] then when your deputy campaign manager, a fellow named Wes Ennis, said, No, [24:04.680 --> 24:08.720] that's not true. It wasn't about money. He was let go. Is your campaign in [24:08.720 --> 24:12.980] disarray? Oh, absolutely not. You know, the other part that you failed to report [24:12.980 --> 24:17.160] is that there are other people outside the campaign who said that he also told [24:17.160 --> 24:21.500] them that he had received money. So this is pretty clear. And remember this [24:21.500 --> 24:25.880] Tuesday night, the Iowa caucuses watch it all unfold live with the best [24:25.880 --> 24:30.200] political team on television. America's Choice 2012 coverage of the Iowa [24:30.200 --> 24:34.480] caucuses beginning Tuesday night, January 3rd, 7 p.m. Eastern time right [24:34.480 --> 24:40.600] here on CNN. And as we count down to the Iowa caucuses, Anderson Cooper takes a [24:40.600 --> 24:45.080] closer look at what each of the candidates is doing to win last minute [24:45.080 --> 24:49.920] support and countdown to Iowa final 48 hours. That's tonight, 8 p.m. Eastern [24:49.920 --> 24:51.640] time right here on CNN. [24:52.920 --> 24:57.200] All right to the number two New Year's resolution behind your health, usually [24:57.200 --> 25:02.080] number one, your financial health, eliminating debt. We'll run through some of them. Our [25:23.720 --> 25:32.920] economy, our workforce. We've all taken some big hits, but this is America with [25:32.920 --> 25:37.840] more energy from coal, the fuel that supplies nearly half our electricity [25:37.840 --> 25:43.960] affordably. We'll keep energy costs in check, jobs in America, and together we [25:43.960 --> 25:49.720] will power the next great comeback. Clean coal. That's America's power. [25:54.040 --> 26:00.280] Sitting in the rear seat, you can chill your drinks, get a massage, put your [26:00.280 --> 26:07.600] feet up, and watch DVDs. There's really only one thing you can't do. [26:11.880 --> 26:17.440] Ranked highest in vehicle appeal by JD Power and Associates, the Equus from [26:17.440 --> 26:17.960] Hyundai. [26:19.840 --> 26:23.360] It's the little things in life that make me smile. Spending the day with my [26:23.360 --> 26:27.960] niece. I don't use super poly grip for holds because my dentures fit well [26:27.960 --> 26:32.160] before those little pieces would get in between my dentures and my gum and it [26:32.160 --> 26:35.640] was uncomfortable. Even well fitting dentures let in food particles. Super [26:35.640 --> 26:39.560] polygrip is zinc free with just a few dabs. It's clinically proven to seal [26:39.560 --> 26:43.280] out more food particles, so you're more comfortable and confident while you eat. [26:43.280 --> 26:47.080] So it's not about keeping my dentures in. It's about keeping the food particles [26:47.080 --> 26:53.360] out. Try zinc free super poly grip. Lactate milk is easy to digest. It's real [26:53.360 --> 26:59.480] milk full of calcium and vitamin D and tastes simply delicious. For those of us [26:59.480 --> 27:04.720] with lactose intolerance, lactate milk, the original 100% lactose free milk. [27:04.720 --> 27:09.080] Single Christians, good news. Top stories right now. A mild earthquake shook eastern Ohio [28:12.980 --> 28:17.900] yesterday. It registered about 4.0 and struck about a week after a smaller [28:17.900 --> 28:22.460] quake rattled the same area. Residents said they saw houses moving. State [28:22.460 --> 28:26.620] officials are exploring a theory that a large scale well project might be [28:26.620 --> 28:32.020] contributing to seismic activity. And despite intense GOP opposition, new [28:32.020 --> 28:36.340] light bulb standards are being phased in. Starting today, conservatives have [28:36.340 --> 28:40.820] blasted the rules as a classic case of unnecessary federal regulation. [28:40.820 --> 28:45.220] Congress passed the 2007 energy law requiring traditional incandescent [28:45.220 --> 28:52.060] bulbs to be 30% more efficient in 2012. Critics argued that the rules would [28:52.060 --> 28:56.620] greatly restrict consumer choices by pushing out traditional incandescent [28:56.620 --> 29:02.740] bulbs in favor of more expensive L. E. D. Bulbs and some new voter laws are [29:02.740 --> 29:07.020] hitting the books this new year. Athena Jones is live in Washington with a look [29:07.020 --> 29:11.140] at some of the new laws taking effect. Athena. Yes. Hello. We thought we just [29:11.140 --> 29:13.980] give you a sampling of a wide range of laws that are coming onto the books [29:13.980 --> 29:18.340] today. Let's start with North Carolina. There are people who live overseas are [29:18.340 --> 29:21.680] going to have an easier time registering to vote and voting, whether they're [29:21.680 --> 29:25.780] service members or civilians. Let's move on to California. Interesting new law [29:25.780 --> 29:29.980] there joins the states. The National Popular Vote Compact. Now that's the [29:29.980 --> 29:33.700] agreement among several states to give all of their electoral votes to the [29:33.700 --> 29:37.260] candidate who wins the nationwide popular vote. Now, of course, it doesn't [29:37.260 --> 29:41.380] go into effect until states that hold 270 electoral votes. That's what it takes [29:41.380 --> 29:45.060] to win. The presidency have passed the law. They're about halfway there. [29:45.060 --> 29:48.140] Several more states have to pass it before it goes into effect. Another [29:48.140 --> 29:52.180] interesting California law will allow new citizens to register to vote and to [29:52.180 --> 29:55.980] vote all the way up to and through Election Day. Now, one big thing that's [29:55.980 --> 29:59.380] been a trend this past year with state legislatures across the country has [29:59.380 --> 30:04.820] been voter I. D. Laws. As of right now, some 31 states require some form of [30:04.820 --> 30:08.580] identification to vote, whether it's a photo or without a photo. Uh, and [30:08.580 --> 30:13.420] starting today, voters in Tennessee and Kansas will be required to present a [30:13.420 --> 30:17.460] photo I. D. In order to vote. I should mention that Texas has also passed a [30:17.460 --> 30:21.780] voter I. D. Law, but under the Voting Rights Act, it has to be pre cleared by [30:21.780 --> 30:25.020] the Department of Justice before it can go into effect. And I should note also [30:25.020 --> 30:29.260] that the D. O. J. Just denied pre clearance to South Carolina for its [30:29.280 --> 30:32.700] photo I. D. Law. One more state I want to mention with an interesting new law [30:32.700 --> 30:36.580] is Tennessee state officials. They're state election officials will now be [30:36.580 --> 30:41.180] required to go through the state voter rolls and compare those to a database [30:41.180 --> 30:44.980] to make sure that no non citizens are registered to vote. And if there's any [30:44.980 --> 30:48.780] evidence that that might be the case, those folks will be contacted and asked [30:48.780 --> 30:53.140] to prove that they are citizens. So a lot of new laws coming into effect this [30:53.140 --> 30:56.420] year, of course, with these voter register voter identification laws, [30:56.440 --> 31:00.100] proponents say what they're trying to fight fraud. Critics, on the other hand, [31:00.100 --> 31:03.140] argue that they're going to end up disenfranchising some voters, [31:03.140 --> 31:06.980] especially poor and minority voters. But one thing we could be pretty sure of [31:06.980 --> 31:10.420] this year is that as we approach November, more and more states will begin [31:10.420 --> 31:14.100] to roll out more laws affecting the election. Okay, Athena Jones, thanks so [31:14.100 --> 31:18.460] much for that update. And there are a few other unique laws that take effect [31:18.460 --> 31:23.460] today. By the way, Utah is banning happy hour while California and Oregon are [31:23.460 --> 31:29.220] prohibiting the sale of shark fins and shark fin soup. Coming up, staying [31:29.220 --> 31:34.700] financially healthy in 2012. Reduce your debt, cut spending. We've got some tips [31:34.700 --> 31:38.860] to keep your resolutions intact in the new year. And as long as we're talking [31:38.860 --> 31:45.340] about New Year's Day, it was this day in 1962 that the fad for the Beatles [31:45.340 --> 31:51.080] audition for DECA records. And you know what? They were rejected. DECA made one [31:51.080 --> 31:54.160] of the biggest mistakes in music history on this day. [32:01.640 --> 32:06.040] This was the golf's best tourism season in years. All because so many people [32:06.040 --> 32:11.280] wanted to visit us in Louisiana. They came to see us in Florida. Nice try. [32:11.280 --> 32:14.920] They came to hang out with us in Alabama. Once folks heard Mississippi [32:14.920 --> 32:19.360] had the welcome sign off, they couldn't wait to get here. This year was great, [32:19.360 --> 32:22.920] but next year is gonna be even better. And anyone who knows the golf knows [32:22.920 --> 32:27.800] that winter is prime time fun time. Sun's out, the water's beautiful. You [32:27.800 --> 32:32.160] can go deep sea fishing for amberjack, grouper and mackerel. Our golf courses [32:32.160 --> 32:36.480] are open. Our bed and breakfast have special rates. And migrating waterfowl [32:36.480 --> 32:40.480] from all over make this a birdwatchers paradise. So if you missed it earlier [32:40.480 --> 32:44.720] this year, come on down. If you've already been here, come on back to [32:44.720 --> 32:50.880] Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, the Gulf, America's getaway spot, no [32:50.880 --> 32:55.720] matter where you go. So come on down and help make 2012 an even better year for [32:55.720 --> 32:59.840] tourism on the golf brought to you by BP and all of us who call the golf home. [33:01.120 --> 33:04.680] Who's Anderson keeping honest tonight? We're not trying to twist anyone's [33:04.680 --> 33:08.320] word. You believe he was in Afghanistan that he was not in Pakistan. We're [33:08.320 --> 33:11.120] simply trying to get some basic questions answered. We want to show you [33:11.120 --> 33:14.800] the truth of what is happening in Syria. Isn't it your job as a leader to [33:14.800 --> 33:19.680] actually leave? Keeping them honest every night. A C 3 60 CNN Monday night [33:19.680 --> 33:24.560] at eight and 10 Eastern two hours. But it may go down 2011, by the way, as [34:52.340 --> 34:56.520] one of these safest years on record for flyers, according to the consulting [34:56.520 --> 35:01.800] firm ascend this year, there has been just one fatality for every 7.1 [35:01.800 --> 35:06.040] million passengers worldwide. That's the best safety level on record. The [35:06.040 --> 35:10.760] previous best was in 2004. Travel experts say better technology and [35:10.760 --> 35:15.160] better crew training has helped make flying less hazardous. So let's hope [35:15.160 --> 35:20.680] 2012 even safer. So it's the number one issue in American homes getting your [35:20.680 --> 35:25.000] financial house in order. Well, today in our weekly financial fix how to keep [35:25.000 --> 35:29.400] your new year's financial resolutions because it is by tradition, the number [35:29.400 --> 35:33.880] two resolution that we make that after taking care of our health matter. So [35:33.880 --> 35:37.800] let's talk about our financial health. Let's bring in author of It's Just [35:37.800 --> 35:41.240] Money. So why does it cause so many problems? Financial consultant Karen Lee. [35:41.240 --> 35:44.520] All right, good to see you too. Happy New Year. Happy New Year. Okay, so [35:44.520 --> 35:47.680] folks always want to say, you know what? I'm gonna get myself in shape, right? [35:47.680 --> 35:51.720] And then I'm also gonna get financially in shape as well. Get rid of debt, save [35:51.720 --> 35:55.960] more money. So let's help us tackle getting rid of debt first. That's the [35:55.960 --> 35:59.800] toughest. It is. It is tough. And so the first thing I want to talk about is you [35:59.800 --> 36:02.480] got the little bit of debt where you just spent a little too much over the [36:02.480 --> 36:06.960] holidays. Okay. Or you've got the massive debt from three really tough economic [36:06.960 --> 36:10.440] years. So let's first tackle the small amount of debt. Okay. Okay. So what we [36:10.440 --> 36:14.440] want you to do with that is first go back to the budget and figure out how [36:14.440 --> 36:18.280] much you actually can pay towards debt monthly, the minimum amount that you can [36:18.280 --> 36:22.640] pay. And then I'd like to see you set it up as an automatic payment from your [36:22.640 --> 36:27.120] online banking right to the credit. That way no excuses, you know, overspending. [36:27.120 --> 36:29.960] You can't write out the check. That's right. If we wait till the end of the [36:29.960 --> 36:34.240] month, there's usually nothing left. So if you can automate it and during that [36:34.240 --> 36:38.040] time, of course, freeze your credit. Do the math. Figure out how many months it's [36:38.040 --> 36:41.280] gonna take. Plan a little reward for yourself at the end and hopefully you [36:41.280 --> 36:44.160] clear. When you say freeze your credit, you're just talking about self-discipline [36:44.160 --> 36:47.760] or you're actually okay. Now if you don't have self-discipline and list a [36:47.760 --> 36:51.400] friend to take your cards away from you, but yes, don't add anything more to that. [36:51.400 --> 36:55.400] Okay. But now let's talk about the big stuff. Probably more Americans because it [36:55.400 --> 36:58.640] has, it's been three years. A lot of people have been out of work. So they [36:58.640 --> 37:02.360] have borrowed, borrowed. They've overspent just to survive. So they got [37:02.360 --> 37:05.600] massive debt. What I'm gonna say to those people is just like if you've got [37:05.600 --> 37:10.320] massive amounts of weight to lose, let's make a realistic goal. If this happened [37:10.320 --> 37:14.000] over a period of years, don't think you're gonna pay it off in six months. So [37:14.000 --> 37:18.200] the first thing we want to do is again go back to the math. Figure out how much [37:18.200 --> 37:21.720] monthly you can free up to put towards debt and then figure out how long it's [37:21.720 --> 37:24.800] gonna take and make the goal realistic and if it's gonna be a couple years. [37:24.800 --> 37:27.920] Yeah. Sometimes that's the hard part isn't that folks you're trying to figure [37:27.920 --> 37:31.400] out how do I calculate? How do I do that? So that's another point I want to say. [37:31.400 --> 37:35.920] For people that really have lots of cards, lots of high interest rates, get [37:35.920 --> 37:40.320] some help. Seek a consumer credit council type firm. Often they can [37:40.320 --> 37:43.800] negotiate with the credit card companies for lower interest rates for you as long [37:43.800 --> 37:47.600] as you're partnering with someone like that. Okay and now you want to save money. [37:47.600 --> 37:51.120] Right. And you want to do this simultaneously if you can. It would be nice if [37:51.120 --> 37:54.840] you could. Okay so say you've tackled the debt part then maybe you're not doing it [37:54.840 --> 37:58.600] simultaneously. How do you save? Well let's talk about first there's two things [37:58.600 --> 38:01.840] people tend to want to save for. One especially now is just having that [38:01.840 --> 38:05.160] emergency money. Yeah. For that stuff that just comes up. So let's talk about [38:05.160 --> 38:11.000] short-term savings first. Again automate it. If you wait till you've paid your [38:11.000 --> 38:14.560] other bills there will not be anything left at the end of the month. So many [38:14.560 --> 38:19.760] companies will allow you to set up from your paycheck, just like for your 401k, [38:19.760 --> 38:24.000] an automatic draft into a credit union or a money market. Whether it's five, ten, [38:24.000 --> 38:28.720] fifty dollars each check. Get it started and you can't touch it unless it's [38:28.720 --> 38:31.880] really an emergency. Do you try and come up with a percentage on that or just [38:31.880 --> 38:35.320] what you can afford? Really what you can afford initially. You could also start [38:35.320 --> 38:39.240] with the goal in mind and then work back monthly as to what you need to reach [38:39.240 --> 38:43.080] that goal. Second one is those longer-term savings and we've talked [38:43.080 --> 38:46.400] about this before but of course the easiest way to save long term for [38:46.400 --> 38:51.440] retirement is if your company has a 401k. Comes out pre-tax before that check [38:51.440 --> 38:55.400] even hits your bank and that is a good thing. So that's a little tax break too. [38:55.400 --> 39:00.760] If you're not investing in your company's 401k, start. If you're already [39:00.760 --> 39:04.360] investing but you're not maxing out, raise that percentage and keep raising [39:04.360 --> 39:08.760] it until you get to that maximum. Another fun idea is to buy a stock or a [39:08.760 --> 39:12.360] couple of shares of stock in a company that pays dividends and set up what's [39:12.360 --> 39:15.680] called a dividend reinvestment plan. As that dividend comes in, don't take the [39:15.680 --> 39:20.160] cash. Let it buy more stock and then set it aside and forget about it. Oh my [39:20.160 --> 39:23.760] goodness. Fifteen, twenty years later it's just a big surprise. You're making it sound so [39:23.760 --> 39:28.400] easy. It is easy and for those who are already maxing out the 401k but they [39:28.400 --> 39:33.120] still want to save and you know I love those people. Yes. Open up a Roth IRA if [39:33.120 --> 39:36.360] you're eligible. If you're looking. Isn't everyone eligible now? Didn't they change [39:36.360 --> 39:40.560] the rules on that? No, there's converting a regular to a Roth is where they [39:40.560 --> 39:45.200] changed the rules. I see. The other thing is 529s for college savings but either way [39:45.200 --> 39:49.440] automate it. You've got to set it up that it's an automatic draft coming out. Then [39:49.440 --> 39:52.080] you don't miss it and you don't touch it and you don't think it through and go [39:52.080 --> 39:58.400] maybe this month I should skip it. So hopefully 2012 things are looking up and it'll be a year that people make [39:58.400 --> 40:02.000] those financial goals happen. All right. All about being financially fit too. Yes. [40:02.000 --> 40:05.440] Karen Lee, that's what you're all about. Thanks so much. Appreciate it. Happy New [40:05.440 --> 40:10.080] Year. Happy New Year to you. All right earlier I asked you to tell me about [40:10.080 --> 40:14.080] your New Year's Day kind of tradition superstitions. You have any superstitions? [40:14.080 --> 40:18.120] Things you have to eat or have to do? I make jambalaya every New Year's Eve. Okay [40:18.120 --> 40:21.160] that's good. Well a lot of folks have responded. Sometimes people do you know [40:21.160 --> 40:24.240] black eyed peas. I did that today. I brought that into work too. Okay so Angela on [40:24.240 --> 40:28.840] Facebook writing this saying my mother's family believes that eating cabbage, [40:28.840 --> 40:32.480] turnips, collard greens and black eyed peas on New Year's Day will bring you [40:32.480 --> 40:37.160] good luck for the rest of the year. And what about your New Year's rituals and [40:37.160 --> 40:40.880] superstitions perhaps? I want to hear from you either send me via Twitter or [40:40.880 --> 40:49.760] on Facebook and we'll share more of your comments coming up. I was just curious I [40:49.760 --> 40:53.440] guess. I even found out that my [40:58.480 --> 41:04.800] great-great-grandparents lived next door to the Wright brothers. I mean I forgot [41:04.800 --> 41:09.200] to mention that. Bill [42:36.760 --> 42:40.680] Schaefer co-inventor of the splash wash did. He came up with the idea while [42:40.680 --> 42:44.720] watching his children play and then helped submitted his idea to Whammo, maker [42:44.720 --> 42:48.720] of toys like the frisbee and hula hoop. To find out how invent help can help you [42:48.720 --> 42:53.080] try to submit your idea to companies call for free information. Bill Schaefer [42:53.080 --> 42:56.280] made a financial gain with his invention. Bill's experience is not [42:56.280 --> 42:59.960] typical and most inventions are not successful. For your free inventors [42:59.960 --> 43:06.560] information call 1-800-490-4633. We're following this breaking story [43:06.560 --> 43:11.880] this involving the shooting of a US Forest Service Ranger at Mount Rainier [43:11.880 --> 43:15.480] in National Park in Washington State. I want to get more information about this [43:15.480 --> 43:19.200] investigation and the circumstances leading to this shooting. Lee Taylor is [43:19.200 --> 43:26.640] a spokesperson with us now. So Lee tell me what you can about this. Well what I [43:26.640 --> 43:31.800] can say is that a National Park Service Ranger Margaret Anderson 34 years old [43:31.800 --> 43:38.040] was shot today by a gunman in the park. It began as just a normal traffic stop [43:38.040 --> 43:43.720] when he failed to pull over another Ranger radioed ahead and Margaret [43:43.720 --> 43:50.040] Anderson set up a blockade with her patrol vehicle to intercept him and when [43:50.040 --> 43:56.400] he arrived at that spot he got out and and shot fatally shot her. He then fled [43:56.400 --> 44:03.240] into the woods so the situation that we have now is a gunman who is in the park [44:03.240 --> 44:08.240] somewhere has not yet been apprehended. And it's believed this gunman is on foot when [44:08.240 --> 44:11.400] you say fled into the woods. That's correct he's on foot he left his car [44:11.400 --> 44:19.160] behind and is on foot somewhere in the park. Okay and and so by way of checking [44:19.160 --> 44:24.760] the registration of the car etc does that anyway match up with the identity [44:24.760 --> 44:29.320] of who you believe the suspect is? Well we have no way of know that because we [44:29.320 --> 44:33.760] don't know if he is the registered owner of the vehicle. We have information [44:33.760 --> 44:37.320] about the owner of the vehicle but we're not sure if it's the same person or not. [44:37.320 --> 44:41.440] We don't have a description of the person since there was nobody else at [44:41.440 --> 44:47.760] the scene when he stopped and shot the park ranger. And is the park closed what [44:47.760 --> 44:52.880] about other people members of the public who may be in that park? The park is [44:52.880 --> 44:57.560] closed and we have been evacuating visitors but we do still have people in [44:57.560 --> 45:01.960] the park there are people who are out snowshoeing or skiing who are still you [45:01.960 --> 45:07.640] know coming back in from their afternoon and we also have about 85 park visitors [45:07.640 --> 45:12.040] who are in our main Park Visitor Center and we're holding them there until we [45:12.040 --> 45:16.960] believe that it's safe for them to drive out of the park. So typically yeah [45:16.960 --> 45:20.560] typically on a day like this you do have a lot of snowshoers and skiers there? [45:20.560 --> 45:24.680] Yeah we do it's a nice day it's a holiday weekend and we would typically [45:24.680 --> 45:27.960] have hundreds of people in the park who'd be out enjoying the beautiful [45:27.960 --> 45:31.560] scenery and the weather. And what about searchers in the air by helicopter? What [45:31.560 --> 45:35.160] are the weather conditions there for that? The weather conditions are good but [45:35.160 --> 45:41.840] it's three hours it's just a few hours now until darkness so you know the end [45:41.840 --> 45:46.400] of daylight will be the limiting factor in terms of being able to continue [45:46.400 --> 45:49.880] searching. And what more might you be able to tell me about Margaret Anderson [45:49.880 --> 45:57.760] 34 years old who was shot and killed? She was a dedicated public servant very [45:57.760 --> 46:03.040] committed to visitors to the park and to helping to protect park resources. Her [46:03.040 --> 46:08.520] husband is also a ranger at Mount Rainier and they have two small children [46:08.520 --> 46:13.080] a four-year-old and a one-year-old so it's a horrible tragedy it's a terrible [46:13.080 --> 46:17.600] loss of life of somebody who had dedicated herself to serving the public. [46:17.600 --> 46:22.240] Terribly sad our hearts go out to her and her family and the entire National [46:22.240 --> 46:27.400] Park Service family. Thanks so much Lee Taylor for your time. All right other [46:27.400 --> 46:31.500] stories we continue to check cross-country now. Some Chicago area [46:31.500 --> 46:36.960] pizza shops are refusing to deliver to customers ordering by cell phone. That's [46:36.960 --> 46:41.440] because of a recent rash of robberies. Police say the robbers are using their [46:41.440 --> 46:45.400] cell phones to target pizza delivery drivers. The restaurants could see their [46:45.400 --> 46:50.240] bottom line suffer since many people don't have landline phones anymore. And a [46:50.240 --> 46:54.720] town in Western Pennsylvania is cracking down on sledding in two local parks. [46:54.720 --> 46:59.920] Beaverboro officials are banning it all together in one park following an [46:59.920 --> 47:05.160] accident. In another park it is still okay to sled but it is restricted to [47:05.160 --> 47:09.640] just residents which means their family and friends cannot take part in that [47:09.640 --> 47:14.480] kind of fun if they don't live there. Children under 12 must also wear helmets. [47:14.480 --> 47:21.000] On the San Francisco now Banana Sam has been safely returned to the city zoo. [47:21.000 --> 47:26.160] Police say a passerby spotted the 17 year old squirrel monkey peeking out [47:26.160 --> 47:31.160] through some bushes at a park yesterday. One day after it was allegedly stolen [47:31.160 --> 47:37.040] the man was able to coax the primate into a backpack apparently. The zoo [47:37.040 --> 47:43.240] workers say Banana Sam is doing just fine. He looks pretty good he's he was [47:43.240 --> 47:46.920] thirsty he was hungry trembling a little bit but we did get do a quick physical [47:46.920 --> 47:50.680] exam on him and he looks pretty good. Is it easy to coax a monkey into a [47:50.680 --> 47:55.520] backpack? I would venture to say that it is not. Yeah a monkey would be placed [47:55.520 --> 48:00.480] into a backpack forcibly. Oh my goodness so zoo officials are still trying to [48:00.480 --> 48:06.240] figure out how Banana Sam was stolen and why? That's a strange mystery isn't it? [48:06.240 --> 48:09.440] All right we're glad that Banana Sam is back at home. All right the newsroom [48:09.440 --> 48:13.120] continues straight ahead. Natalie Allen in for Don Lemon. Happy New Year. Happy [48:13.120 --> 48:17.320] New Year to you. We're also happy about Banana Sam. More on the big [48:17.320 --> 48:20.560] stories coming up. You've been following today the Iowa caucuses. Plenty of [48:20.560 --> 48:25.120] coverage including reports from the state plus our Sunday analysis with Will [48:25.120 --> 48:29.320] Kane and LZ Granderson and more fires overnight in Los Angeles to tell you [48:29.320 --> 48:34.360] about seven suspected arson fires were reported in the LA area. That brings the [48:34.360 --> 48:41.320] total to 39. A task force continues to investigate so far no arrests. Also a [48:41.320 --> 48:45.640] look back at the big cases this year that changed the legal landscape. Holly [48:45.640 --> 48:49.720] Hughes will be here to talk. Casey Anthony, Conrad Murray and the Connecticut [48:49.720 --> 48:53.680] home invasion trial all coming up in a little bit. All right very good. You had a [48:53.680 --> 49:00.040] great ringing in of the new year. Yes I know some of it was here. I'm going to [49:00.040 --> 49:03.720] ring it in tomorrow. That's good. Meantime any superstitions or traditions [49:03.720 --> 49:07.920] anything you'd like to adhere to? Yes I am going to lose that five pounds. Oh [49:07.920 --> 49:12.160] okay. That's the number one resolution in America right? And I'll forget January 8th [49:12.160 --> 49:16.760] that was my resolution. Oh okay well hopefully you won't be among the what [49:16.760 --> 49:22.560] 51% of Americans who break their New Year's resolutions within the month of [49:22.560 --> 49:27.680] January. I will be. Okay. No no we want you to keep that resolution but you don't need to lose five [49:27.680 --> 49:33.920] pounds by the way. Well thank you. Poppy Harlow gets [52:32.120 --> 52:37.160] us up to speed with a look ahead on Wall Street. I'm Poppy Harlow in New York. US [52:37.160 --> 52:40.720] markets will be closed Monday for the New Year's holiday but when they reopen [52:40.720 --> 52:45.960] Tuesday Wall Street kicks off 2012 with a host of economic news. Coming up key [52:45.960 --> 52:50.020] reports on construction spending, car and truck sales. We could actually see some [52:50.020 --> 52:53.960] strength there and factory orders all leading up to the critical December jobs [52:53.960 --> 52:58.240] report that comes Friday morning. Investors of course eerily anticipating [52:58.240 --> 53:02.720] that number and hoping for an upside surprise. We'll track it all on CNN [53:02.720 --> 53:06.400] money. All right thanks so much Poppy. All right the ball dropping in Times [53:06.400 --> 53:10.160] Square. It's America's New Year's tradition but you probably have some [53:10.160 --> 53:14.400] New Year's rituals and superstitions of your own. Maybe some of which have been [53:14.400 --> 53:18.160] passed down through the family. I asked you to send them to me and you did via [53:18.160 --> 53:22.240] Twitter and Facebook. So Melissa writes it's supposed to be good luck for a man [53:22.240 --> 53:26.680] to be the first to walk through the door in your house on New Year's Day and [53:26.680 --> 53:29.920] here's another New Year's Day superstition. Black-eyed peas are [53:29.920 --> 53:33.360] supposed to be lucky if you put a few dry ones in your purse. Oh that part I [53:33.360 --> 53:37.760] didn't do today. And Melody writes it's supposed to be bad luck to wash clothes [53:37.760 --> 53:42.760] on New Year's Day. It is said to lead to a death in your family during the year. [53:42.760 --> 53:47.560] Bonnie Schneider with us now. Bonnie have any traditions? Those are great aren't they? [53:47.560 --> 53:50.640] I'm gonna make sure to not do laundry today. It's gonna be a real... I know I already [53:50.640 --> 53:53.480] sent a message to my husband today too when I heard about that one. I was like [53:53.480 --> 53:58.200] don't do any laundry today. I can wait no rush on that. I heard about eating black-eyed [53:58.200 --> 54:01.760] peas. I didn't know about putting dry ones in your purse. That's unusual. I'm [54:01.760 --> 54:05.320] gonna go grab some. Yeah me too. Well you know we are looking at unfortunately [54:05.320 --> 54:08.840] Frederica some snow that's going to be troublesome for travelers and a lot of [54:08.840 --> 54:12.640] people are getting back to it from a long week off or maybe you went somewhere [54:12.640 --> 54:16.240] for New Year's Eve and now you're heading home. Well travel conditions [54:16.240 --> 54:19.520] across parts of Michigan are gonna be downright dangerous. That's right we have [54:19.520 --> 54:23.080] blizzard warnings in effect that go straight until tomorrow night. You're [54:23.080 --> 54:26.160] looking at a radar picture of heavy snow working its way across the Great Lakes. [54:26.160 --> 54:32.400] The numbers are incredible because you can see 12 inches plus across parts of [54:32.400 --> 54:35.160] Michigan. That includes the Traverse City area. That's where the blizzard warning [54:35.160 --> 54:38.040] is and it's right in the northern part of Michigan. That's where we're gonna see [54:38.040 --> 54:41.600] some of those lake effect snow bands really be fierce and along with the heavy [54:41.600 --> 54:44.560] snow of course comes the gusty winds when you're talking about a lake effect [54:44.560 --> 54:49.240] snowmaker and what that means is you'll have blowing and drifting snow. That will [54:49.240 --> 54:52.400] create snow drifts that could be even higher than the highest snowfall total [54:52.400 --> 54:55.880] accumulation. So travel in northern Michigan is just dangerous. If you can [54:55.880 --> 54:59.080] avoid it I would recommend it. Notice the lake effect snow though stretching all [54:59.080 --> 55:02.520] the way into upstate New York. These advisories for winds show that we are [55:02.520 --> 55:06.320] looking at fierce winds again that will pile the snow that's falling. So even [55:06.320 --> 55:09.800] though the accumulation might be a burst of sudden snow in some areas and dry in [55:09.800 --> 55:13.840] others which is so random the way it is for the localization of lake effect snow [55:13.840 --> 55:17.840] we are going to see those snow pile up a little bit more. This is a forecast radar [55:17.840 --> 55:20.880] picture not actual radar. I just wanted to show you over the next 48 hours. The [55:20.880 --> 55:23.760] weather does improve we get a little bit of better conditions but the immediate [55:23.760 --> 55:27.920] threat of course is for danger for Michigan and even into parts of upstate [55:27.920 --> 55:31.560] New York where we have the advisories as well. The heaviest snow on that little [55:31.560 --> 55:33.760] dot you can see that pink dot in northern Michigan that's where we are [55:33.760 --> 55:37.800] looking at a foot of snow plus again it will be even more fierce as we go [55:37.800 --> 55:41.040] through the day when we get some more wind blowing in and the reason that [55:41.040 --> 55:44.480] we're getting so much snow with this lake effect snow machine is a couple [55:44.480 --> 55:48.320] different factors. We have very cold air coming over warmer waters of the Great [55:48.320 --> 55:51.520] Lakes and the water temperatures are still pretty warm it's in the 40s over [55:51.520 --> 55:55.320] the lakes it may not seem very warm but it's warmer than the land so the really [55:55.320 --> 55:59.120] the cold air gathers that moisture that warm moist air right above the Great [55:59.120 --> 56:02.880] Lakes and as soon as it rushes back over land the land is colder and it just [56:02.880 --> 56:06.480] dumps it heavy and hard across this region. So our map for today shows that [56:06.480 --> 56:09.720] lake effect snow machine otherwise the rest of the US is looking good it's been [56:09.720 --> 56:14.280] a soggy week and weekend for places like Portland Oregon unfortunately we have [56:14.280 --> 56:17.160] more rain in your forecast for Monday and some scattered showers popping up [56:17.160 --> 56:21.640] into Florida across a good portion of that the region of the state there but [56:21.640 --> 56:24.880] notice the temperature contrast there is a cold front that's pushed through it [56:24.880 --> 56:28.120] doesn't quite make it all the way through South Florida so highs tomorrow [56:28.120 --> 56:32.040] in Miami will still be near 80 whereas Tampa you're only gonna hit 64 so it [56:32.040 --> 56:35.840] depends where you are in terms of getting that really warm weather 22 [56:35.840 --> 56:40.400] that's it for Minneapolis and you can see 23 in Chicago Atlantis only at 46 and [56:40.400 --> 56:44.200] I can tell you in the southeast our numbers are going down we had highs today [56:44.200 --> 56:47.800] in the 60s it was just glorious. We got so spoiled. Things are changing Frederica [56:47.800 --> 56:51.760] low temperatures are gonna drop down tomorrow night into the teens and 20s in some parts of [56:51.760 --> 56:55.920] Georgia so it's all changing. Winter's here it's January it's 2012 and it's [56:55.920 --> 57:00.280] cold out there. Yeah 2011 was an incredible year in weather 2012 promises [57:00.280 --> 57:04.520] to be. Well you know we had definitely had an extreme weather year in 2011 it [57:04.520 --> 57:07.320] doesn't necessarily mean we're gonna see another one in 2012 but it's very [57:07.320 --> 57:10.240] important to be prepared yeah and right now our biggest threat is lake effect [57:10.240 --> 57:14.480] snow and cold cold air. All the more apropos for your upcoming book on [57:14.480 --> 57:17.960] extreme weather and how to deal with so look for Bonnie Schneider's book coming out [57:17.960 --> 57:22.280] in 2012.
