Our water main break in Hercules is causing [00:14.720 --> 00:20.640] a massive leak there. Cronford's dial in shows us the work being done to fix the break. A large [00:20.640 --> 00:26.000] water line that broke here in the town of Rodale is causing problems for some East Bay Mud customers. [00:26.000 --> 00:29.840] A spokeswoman for the water company says shortly after three o'clock today, [00:29.840 --> 00:34.960] they received a lot of calls from customers in Rodale and Hercules reporting a drop in water [00:34.960 --> 00:40.480] pressure. After sending a crew out here near the intersection of Willow Avenue and Hawthorne Drive, [00:40.480 --> 00:47.040] they found a large water line about 24 inches in diameter had burst. Aside from a drop in water [00:47.040 --> 00:52.320] pressure, a couple of East Bay Mud customers also reported getting dirty water. An East Bay Mud [00:52.320 --> 00:58.000] spokeswoman says the rupture is also affecting the nearby Conoco Phillips refinery and CNH [00:58.000 --> 01:04.000] sugar. Crews have shut off that 24-inch line and the water is now leaking into Rodale Creek. [01:04.000 --> 01:10.400] Many residents say the water pressure is slowly returning to normal. Relieved? Yeah, because [01:10.400 --> 01:18.000] we need the water to, you know, cooking and take a shower and, you know, we have water, we have [01:18.000 --> 01:23.280] electricity, everything. East Bay Mud is trying to find out what caused that line to rupture [01:23.280 --> 01:28.960] and they're not exactly sure when they'll have that line replaced or fixed. In Rodale, I'm [01:28.960 --> 01:35.200] Dalen, Cronfort News. A new auto man is in jail after an early morning DUI crash sent a teenager [01:35.200 --> 01:40.640] to the hospital. Cronfort's Marine Kelly explains what happened. Here you can see the driver [01:40.640 --> 01:46.880] stumbling during his field sobriety test conducted just minutes after police say he crashed his car [01:46.880 --> 01:52.880] into a 15-year-old boy. The.15, he was almost double the legal limit. That's extremely drunk. [01:52.880 --> 01:57.280] You're not able to really function. The unidentified teenager who was struck had been [01:57.280 --> 02:01.920] walking with a group of four other kids as they attempted to cross this intersection of East [02:01.920 --> 02:08.720] Washington and Edith at 12.38 this morning. The 15-year-old was the first one to try and cross. [02:08.720 --> 02:13.840] This orange X you see on the ground is where he was walking when the car hit him. There are no [02:13.840 --> 02:19.200] stop lights or stop signs here at this busy intersection but police say cars in three of the [02:19.200 --> 02:25.200] four lanes on this street stopped to let the group cross but the suspect driving here in this fourth [02:25.200 --> 02:31.280] lane apparently didn't see the teenagers or the other stopped traffic and kept on driving. [02:31.280 --> 02:35.600] Here you can see where the victim smashed against the suspect vehicle's front windshield. [02:35.600 --> 02:40.800] The boy was transported by ambulance with a broken leg. Police say the suspect 20-year-old [02:40.800 --> 02:46.160] Wesley Pickford had a clean driving record up to this point. He was booked into the Sonoma County [02:46.160 --> 02:52.240] jail for felony DUI. It's a charge which could result in very serious and expensive consequences. [02:52.240 --> 02:57.760] You know DUIs can run anywhere from like in a legal defense for $10,000 and any time you're [02:57.760 --> 03:03.040] talking about felonies there's the possibility of going to state prison. Maureen Kelly Cronford News. [03:03.040 --> 03:08.240] A Stockton woman is in jail accused of driving drunk then hitting and killing a pedestrian while [03:08.240 --> 03:12.960] her four children were in the car with her. Police say the 29-year-old hit the man just [03:12.960 --> 03:18.480] outside his home on New Year's Eve. The suspect faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, felony drunk [03:18.480 --> 03:24.160] driving and endangering her children. A new law that went into effect today targets repeat drunk [03:24.160 --> 03:28.960] drivers. Any Californian who is convicted of a DUI three or more times could have their license [03:28.960 --> 03:34.640] suspended for up to 10 years. That law was created after a San Mateo man was arrested for his ninth [03:34.640 --> 03:40.400] DUI. One of the bill's authors is San Mateo Assemblyman Jerry Hill. Another new law in San [03:40.400 --> 03:46.400] Jose band's plastic bags from all stores. Craig Sklar shows us what that means to the average grocery [03:46.400 --> 03:54.960] shopper. No more paper or plastic. Now it's paper or bring your own. This Save Mart store in East [03:54.960 --> 04:00.080] San Jose was ready offering free reusable canvas bags for early customers to use from now on. [04:00.080 --> 04:03.920] After that you'll have to buy them yourself. So plastic bags are out. So your choices? [04:03.920 --> 04:08.560] Well you can go paper bags which you got to pay a dime every time you use one or a reusable canvas [04:08.560 --> 04:13.600] bag but you got to remember to bring it with you to the store every time. Most customers are saying [04:13.600 --> 04:17.600] they accept the change in the name of protecting the environment and the landfills from endless [04:17.600 --> 04:22.480] discarded plastic bags. That's why San Jose passed the law in the first place. It's nothing new to [04:22.480 --> 04:26.800] me. I mean I've been using these for a couple years now so it's no really biggie to me. It's [04:26.800 --> 04:34.080] better than having those plastic bags and just going in the creeks in a hurt environment so this [04:34.080 --> 04:39.200] is a good way to go. Some though are irritated. They like the convenience of plastic. They're [04:39.200 --> 04:44.320] more handy. To me they are. A lot of people hate them but I don't. I enjoy the plastic bags. Critics [04:44.320 --> 04:49.280] say the largest adds cost to businesses and hardship for customers but Sunnyvale and Monterey [04:49.280 --> 04:54.000] will be joining San Jose in San Francisco with bands going into effect later this year. So remember [04:54.000 --> 04:59.040] to bring your reusable bag. It's likely to become a regular part of your shopping life in San Jose. [04:59.040 --> 05:04.560] Craig Spark on four news. Banana Sam the monkey is back home tonight at the San Francisco Zoo [05:04.560 --> 05:10.160] after he was stolen two days ago. Police say the 17 year old squirrel monkey was found by a man [05:10.160 --> 05:15.520] at a nearby park. The man lured the pocket size primate into his backpack. Police are not sure [05:15.520 --> 05:20.080] exactly who took the monkey. However the zoo has increased security because vandals cut two holes [05:20.080 --> 05:26.480] in the mesh of the monkey exhibit to get that monkey out. He was trembling and hungry last night [05:26.480 --> 05:32.560] but I'm pleased to report that he is in good health and calm today. He's eating well. His stool is [05:32.560 --> 05:36.880] fine. He looks to be in great health. We received a call from the police last night that someone [05:36.880 --> 05:42.400] had called into them and had been able to lure a squirrel monkey back into a knapsack. The police [05:42.400 --> 05:47.920] are still investigating the matter. All I know is that the call was made from stern groves so [05:47.920 --> 05:53.040] allegedly the monkey was found in stern grove. We were very fearful but we're grateful. He seems [05:53.040 --> 05:57.760] to be in good shape. He unfortunately is on his own right now as we examine him and we hope we can [05:57.760 --> 06:03.120] return him back to his fellow colleagues here at the exhibit. How long will he be in quarantine? [06:03.120 --> 06:07.680] You know can be anywhere up to 30 days depending on how we respond to medical tests. We hope it's [06:07.680 --> 06:13.040] sooner than that of course though. Back in 2000 another animal was stolen from the San Francisco [06:13.040 --> 06:19.040] Zoo. A mother koala and her baby were taken from their enclosure in 2000. They were later found [06:19.040 --> 06:23.200] in the San Francisco home. They were okay but hungry. They had been taken by two teenagers who [06:23.200 --> 06:25.840] wanted to give them to their girlfriends for Christmas. [06:29.440 --> 06:35.040] Gorgeous weather for this first day of 2012. We had mostly sunny skies and some warm temperatures [06:35.040 --> 06:41.680] that made it up into the 60s in a lot of locations. Upper 60s even 70 degrees for Mountain View today. [06:41.680 --> 06:47.680] These readings running about 10 degrees above normal in a lot of spots around the Bay Area. [06:47.680 --> 06:53.600] And it's going to remain on the warm side through this coming week, the first week of 2012. The [06:53.600 --> 06:58.880] mild temperatures continue into this evening right now. Lots of spots checking in in the 50s. It's [06:58.880 --> 07:05.280] 54 degrees in San Francisco as well as Mountain View San Jose right now 53 and the overnight lows [07:05.280 --> 07:10.080] for tonight and into tomorrow morning will be relatively mild as well. We're going to see [07:10.080 --> 07:15.920] increasing low clouds as we go into tonight and some valley fog developing for the North Bay [07:15.920 --> 07:20.560] Valleys. Santa Rosa and Fairfield could see some low visibility for tomorrow morning. [07:20.560 --> 07:24.720] Temperatures not as cold as what we've seen. Mid 40s San Francisco and Oakland, [07:24.720 --> 07:30.080] coolest spots in the North Bay into the mid 30s. Now going through the day we're going to see some [07:30.720 --> 07:35.520] high clouds sunshine mixed with the clouds through the day as a weather system makes its way through [07:35.520 --> 07:40.400] the Bay Area. Any chance for wet weather though is going to stay to our North. Look for high [07:40.400 --> 07:46.240] temperatures not quite as warm as what we've seen but still pretty nice upper 50s and low 60s. [07:46.240 --> 07:51.440] I'll talk more about the weather for this first week of 2012. Coming up Vicki. Well the Oakland [07:51.440 --> 07:55.760] Raiders needed a win today for a chance to get into the playoffs. Despite a late push they [07:55.760 --> 08:02.080] just couldn't get it done. San Diego Chargers defeating the Raiders 38 to 26. 49ers are already [08:02.080 --> 08:06.720] in the playoffs today. They played to keep their second seed which means a buy in the first round [08:06.720 --> 08:11.520] of the playoffs. The Niners defeated the St. Louis Rams today. They will play Saturday, [08:11.520 --> 08:18.400] January 14th against either the Falcons, Giants or Cowboys. Coming up on Cronfort News at 8 we [08:18.400 --> 08:24.720] look at who the top contenders are to win the Iowa Caucus. It's been three weeks, so I had to pick up some more things. Good thing I've got the city [10:27.360 --> 10:32.320] simplicity card. I don't get hit with a fee if I'm late with a payment, which is good because on this [10:32.320 --> 10:40.480] job. No, bigger. I may not be home for a while. The new city simplicity card, no late fees, no [10:40.480 --> 10:49.920] penalty rate, no worries. Now to decision 2012, a final push from the Republican presidential [10:49.920 --> 10:56.720] candidates before the Iowa caucus and with only two days to go, a new poll suggests Romney and [10:56.720 --> 11:00.720] Ron Paul will battle it out for the top spot. Barbara Hall shows us where the candidates are [11:00.720 --> 11:07.440] stomping today. A political fight to the finish line before the first real voting of the 2012 [11:07.440 --> 11:13.840] presidential race. The latest Des Moines Register poll shows Mitt Romney and Ron Paul neck and neck. [11:13.840 --> 11:20.400] Paul says his campaign is picking up momentum. We're doing very, very well and uh people should [11:20.400 --> 11:24.000] just be a little bit patient. You know, on Tuesday we're going to find out a lot more about the [11:24.000 --> 11:29.440] future of this election. Rival Mitt Romney is narrowly leading among caucus goers. On Sunday, [11:29.440 --> 11:34.640] he picked up another endorsement from Iowa newspaper, The Quad City Times. Former Senator [11:34.640 --> 11:40.000] Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania rounded out the top three in the poll. My surge is going to come on [11:40.000 --> 11:45.520] January 3rd. After the people of Iowa do what they do, which is actually analyze the candidates, [11:45.520 --> 11:50.000] figure out where their positions are, find out who's the who's the right leader, who's got the [11:50.000 --> 11:55.440] what it takes to defeat Barack Obama and to to lead this country. Iowa's governor seems to agree. [11:55.440 --> 12:02.400] My goal is as governor, unite the Republican party, attract the independence and defeat [12:02.400 --> 12:07.280] Obama. We launched him, we want to sink him. Also on the campaign trail Sunday, Newt Gingrich, [12:07.280 --> 12:12.880] Rick Perry and Michelle Bachman stumping in Iowa, while John Huntsman focuses on New Hampshire, [12:12.880 --> 12:19.440] which votes a week after the Iowa caucus. [14:34.640 --> 14:38.640] If a new Honda isn't sitting in your driveway by now, then perhaps I failed to convey the [14:38.640 --> 14:43.680] proper sense of urgency. Cute, dramatic music. [15:04.800 --> 15:08.400] History was made in Hawaii today after the stroke of midnight. [15:08.400 --> 15:12.960] Several same sex couples took advantage of a new law that allows civil unions. [15:12.960 --> 15:20.000] Dick Alguyer was there for the celebration. We now pronounce that you are legally joined [15:20.000 --> 15:30.640] as partners in life. After midnight in the opening moments of 2012, the first civil unions [15:30.640 --> 15:36.560] became official in Honolulu. The event was held at a beautiful private home in Aina Hina. It was [15:36.560 --> 15:42.160] organized by a number of gay, lesbian and transgender activists and support groups. [15:42.160 --> 15:46.880] The celebration began on New Year's Eve. There was a party, a recognition ceremony, [15:46.880 --> 15:52.640] to honor those who have fought for civil unions for so many years and then the unions. [15:52.640 --> 15:56.000] Without beginning or end, they symbolize eternity. [15:56.800 --> 16:01.760] Reverence from local churches presided over the civil unions. The couple said they wanted [16:01.760 --> 16:07.520] their unions to become official as soon as possible. We really don't want to wait any longer because [16:07.520 --> 16:17.200] we have been together for 33 years waiting for our opportunity and our rights and everything [16:17.200 --> 16:25.280] that goes with it. So why wait? The historic part of it for me is that to be one of the firsts to [16:25.280 --> 16:30.560] open that door so that the rest of them after us, you know, there's others out there that want to [16:30.560 --> 16:35.520] do this and they can show them, you know, we can show them, you know, hey, you love somebody, [16:35.520 --> 16:40.720] you have the right to be with them the rest of your life also. They say the official recognition [16:40.720 --> 16:48.080] is important. It means that our state supports us and that's a really good feeling after all this [16:48.080 --> 16:55.600] time and it'll be that much easier for those who come after us. And they have a message to other [16:55.600 --> 17:02.880] same-sex couples. Our message is go for the gustos. Like they say in Hawaii, go for broke. [17:02.880 --> 17:11.600] Don't be ashamed. Hawaii is not the only state allowing same-sex unions. Delaware saw 400 people [17:11.600 --> 17:20.400] tie the knot today. Thanks to their new law. Well, here's the view from Twin Peaks this afternoon [17:20.400 --> 17:26.400] for San Francisco this January 1st, 2012. A beautiful day, mostly sunny skies in the temperature [17:26.400 --> 17:34.000] in San Francisco up to 61 degrees. So we're starting off dry and warm and that's the way it's been [17:34.000 --> 17:38.080] lately around here right now live San Francisco looking at the Embarcadero. And by the way, [17:38.720 --> 17:44.720] this very shot last night on Cronford Midnight. A beautiful fireworks display over the city [17:44.720 --> 17:49.200] and we have some more nice weather to talk about for tonight. Temperatures in the 50s right now. [17:49.200 --> 17:55.760] It is mild ocean beach 53 degrees Berkeley at 54. Pittsburgh and Petaluma cooler but still [17:55.760 --> 18:02.080] not too bad in the mid 40s. Here's the satellite view and we have a weather system offshore for [18:02.080 --> 18:08.640] tonight. This system, though, like we've seen so much of lately is going to stay to the north. [18:08.640 --> 18:13.280] That's where all the rain is going to be. We're going to see some cloudiness out of this for [18:13.280 --> 18:17.920] tomorrow. So as we go through the night tonight, look for the clouds to increase. We'll wake up [18:17.920 --> 18:23.920] to mostly cloudy skies for tomorrow morning and then look for partly sunny skies in the afternoon. [18:23.920 --> 18:29.120] So it'll be a mixture of sunshine and high thin clouds and this dry weather we've seen is going [18:29.120 --> 18:36.560] to stick around at least through next weekend. So no relief in sight from this spell of rain free [18:36.560 --> 18:41.520] days. Here's future cast midnight tonight and we'll watch the clouds increase as we go through [18:41.520 --> 18:47.440] the overnight hours. There it comes. All the rain up here around Eureka to the north of Ucaia. [18:47.440 --> 18:52.080] There originally was a chance for showers around Santa Rosa, but that is now out of the forecast. [18:52.080 --> 18:57.200] Look for clouds in the morning, partly sunny afternoon, and then the clouds will clear out for [18:57.200 --> 19:02.080] tomorrow night. And as far as the rainfall totals go for December, one of the driest [19:02.080 --> 19:07.440] December's on record. Oakland, San Jose and Santa Rosa picking up less than a tenth of an inch [19:07.440 --> 19:12.960] for the entire month. Typically we see much more than that and a lot of locations around the Bay [19:12.960 --> 19:18.240] area. It was the second driest December on record. Now for tomorrow morning, cloudy skies, [19:18.240 --> 19:22.560] mostly cloudy. Could see some fog here in the North Bay Valley's Fairfield, Santa Rosa, mid to [19:22.560 --> 19:27.680] upper thirties, low to mid forties by the bay with highs in the afternoon, not quite as warm [19:27.680 --> 19:34.560] because of the cloud cover upper fifties and low sixties and looking ahead at the next seven days [19:34.560 --> 19:41.440] this first week of 2012. Well, it's looking pretty nice. We're going to see dry conditions once again [19:41.440 --> 19:46.800] and morning fog afternoon sunshine through much of this week and continued warm temperatures [19:46.800 --> 19:51.760] mid to upper sixties for Tuesday and Wednesday. There's a system coming by for Thursday. [19:51.760 --> 19:56.640] All the rain stays to the north with that one as well and dry weather through next weekend. Vicki [19:57.360 --> 20:01.360] make them and break them seems to be the theme for many of us who make promises for the new [20:01.360 --> 20:06.400] year only to stumble weeks later. But as Karen Kafa tells us in this week's clicked in, [20:06.400 --> 20:09.360] your smartphone could be your resolution solution. [20:09.360 --> 20:22.080] Out with old habits in with the new. I'm going to join a gym and become more active. I'm going to [20:22.080 --> 20:27.920] try to drink more water because I drink too much diet soda. New year's resolutions are easy to make [20:27.920 --> 20:32.720] and even easier to break. Have you guys ever had a resolution that you didn't quite stick with? [20:32.720 --> 20:38.160] Yes. What was that? Going to diet. It was a stop biting my nails but then never worked out. [20:38.160 --> 20:43.680] So what if you had a reminder in your pocket every day? That's the goal of smartphone apps like [20:43.680 --> 20:50.480] resolutions 2012, which lets users choose goals, identify habits they need to change to meet them [20:50.480 --> 20:56.240] and track progress. Weight loss is a popular resolution each year. The daily burn app for [20:56.240 --> 21:01.520] iPhone manages workouts and calorie counts. The new weight loss app for Android gives [21:01.520 --> 21:06.720] day by day tips on eating, working out and slimming down. The My Quick Coach app from [21:06.720 --> 21:12.000] Livestrong is for those who want to kick butts in 2012. The app presents daily guidelines for [21:12.000 --> 21:18.000] quitting smoking gradually over time or helping you go cold turkey. The quitter app for iPhone [21:18.000 --> 21:23.200] tallies how much money you've saved since putting down your last cigarette and keeping the resolution [21:23.200 --> 21:29.120] can require a support system. I want to try to eat healthier. We got to be a role model and show [21:29.120 --> 21:35.600] that more how to eat healthy. Try posting your goal on social media so connections can cheer you on. [21:35.600 --> 21:42.080] I'm Karen Keitha and you're now clicked in. Making more room for art in the city. Coming up, [21:42.080 --> 22:08.080] we're going to show you the bigger, better, brand new redesign for SF MoMA. [22:12.400 --> 22:18.080] And keep all rebates. That means savings up to $6500 on a built Ford Tough Truck and payments as [22:18.080 --> 22:23.440] low as $139 a month on Fusion. [23:02.000 --> 23:09.840] This holiday, treat yourself to the gift of driving from Mazda, a company obsessed with it, [23:09.840 --> 23:15.760] like the spacious Mazda six sports sedan, the five passenger Mazda CX seven and the seven [23:15.760 --> 23:21.840] passenger Mazda CX nine. We've wrapped up these mazes with 0% APR for 60 months for snow payments [23:21.840 --> 23:27.600] for 90 days, but only through January 3rd. If it's not worth driving, it's not worth building. [23:27.600 --> 23:36.400] We build Mazdas. What do you drive? I'd like to think I'm a smart guy and can handle any situation, [23:36.400 --> 23:40.880] but when a drunk driver told him my motorcycle, my friend insisted that I call attorney Neil [23:40.880 --> 23:46.880] Kovara first before I called my insurance company because even your own insurance company can and [23:46.880 --> 23:52.640] will use what you tell them against you. Neil Kovara's 35 plus years of experience paid off. [23:52.640 --> 23:56.800] I didn't know I'm a cent till he settled my case and he got me a lot more money than the [23:56.800 --> 24:01.440] insurance company offered. Calling attorney Neil Kovara was definitely the smart choice. [24:03.040 --> 24:13.440] Let's go to Vegas. Let's go to Vegas. Maybe we should head back to the dealership first. [24:15.360 --> 24:21.360] Because you know this is a test drive. It's practically yours, but we still need your signature. [24:21.360 --> 24:25.760] Volkswagen sign and drive is back and it's never been easier to get a Jetta. That's the power of [24:25.760 --> 24:29.680] German engineer. Korn 4 News, your source for the most local news [24:36.880 --> 24:44.080] in the Bay Area. From people you know, people you trust, relentless coverage during breaking news. [24:44.080 --> 24:52.960] Korn 4 is the Bay Area's news station. Now, time for the Korn 4 Tech Report with Gabe Slate. [24:52.960 --> 24:58.800] I'm at SFO. I've been talking to travelers about this issue. Most people I talked to were [24:58.800 --> 25:04.080] unaware of it, but they did have a reaction to that more on that later. First, here's what's [25:04.080 --> 25:10.080] going on. Google has launched an online flight fair finder service. You can find it at google.com [25:10.080 --> 25:16.160] backslash flights. It's their version of Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, or Kayak. You just put in [25:16.160 --> 25:21.360] the cities you want to fly to and from, and Google lists out the prices of that flight. [25:21.360 --> 25:25.840] They compare the airlines to find you the cheapest ticket. If you click on those ticket prices, [25:25.840 --> 25:30.720] you are taken directly to the airline's website to purchase the tickets. I thought the service was [25:30.720 --> 25:35.520] great. I found it really fast and easy to use. But here's the problem. Now that Google has an [25:35.520 --> 25:40.640] online travel service, it puts Google in direct competition with sites like Expedia, Hotwire, [25:40.640 --> 25:46.000] Travelocity, Orbitz, Kayak, and Priceline. And those websites are claiming that when you do a [25:46.000 --> 25:51.840] basic search for travel on Google.com, something like flights from San Francisco to New York, [25:51.840 --> 25:58.640] Google puts its flights fair service higher within the results than the other online travel websites. [25:58.640 --> 26:03.040] Before Google offered their new service, sites like Orbitz and Expedia would be up at the top of [26:03.040 --> 26:08.720] the results. These middlemen online travel sites depend on some of their traffic coming from generic [26:08.720 --> 26:14.160] travel searches through Google's search site. So they're upset and feel it's unfair that they [26:14.160 --> 26:19.520] have been pushed down in the list of results. In a statement Google sent to me, they said this, [26:19.520 --> 26:24.560] like any other partner, Google needs to honor the airline's distribution decisions with the flight [26:24.560 --> 26:30.400] search feature. That means we currently can only show airlines in the booking links. We're exploring [26:30.400 --> 26:35.840] advertising opportunities within the page to showcase other partners. So it sounds like Google [26:35.840 --> 26:40.320] will try to make it a little more fair for their competitors in the near future. This could turn [26:40.320 --> 26:45.200] into a Department of Justice antitrust issue. There could be a big lawn and drawn out lawsuit. [26:45.200 --> 26:49.680] We'll have to wait and see how this shakes out. Here at SFO I talk to travelers about all of this [26:49.680 --> 26:54.880] and several people brought up a good point. People who use Kayak Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, [26:54.880 --> 27:00.000] these types of sites often, they just go to those websites to do their travel shopping. [27:00.000 --> 27:04.720] They don't find those sites through a Google search. So they'll just keep doing what they're doing [27:04.720 --> 27:11.440] unaffected. Google Fairfinders just now another of the dozen online travel tools that they can use. [27:11.440 --> 27:16.320] Gabe Slate, Cron For News. Could this Sacramento Delta be another Katrina-like [27:16.320 --> 27:20.240] flood in the making coming up for you to see why experts are worried about a possible breach in [27:20.240 --> 27:25.360] the Delta levees? [30:02.400 --> 30:06.160] Federal authorities say they sent fighter jets to check out a plane headed to the [30:06.160 --> 30:10.960] Bay Area this morning. That flight was going to Oakland from Santa Monica. The FAA says that [30:10.960 --> 30:16.640] air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the plane near Ventura. They sent the jets as a [30:16.640 --> 30:20.720] precaution. Air traffic controllers eventually got into contact with the plane and the jets were [30:20.720 --> 30:25.760] called off. That plane landed in Oakland without incident. Oakland police are still searching for [30:25.760 --> 30:30.160] the person who shot and killed a five year old Friday night. Now they're offering a reward. [30:30.160 --> 30:35.440] Gabriel Martinez Jr. was with his family at the taco truck that they own on International Boulevard. [30:35.440 --> 30:40.000] Police say that the suspect ordered a taco, started eating, then just started shooting. [30:40.000 --> 30:43.680] Gabriel was hit in the stomach. Police do not know why the man opened fire there, [30:43.680 --> 30:49.920] teaming up with prime stoppers to offer a $25,000 reward for his arrest. There are several [30:49.920 --> 30:54.400] new laws that go into effect today. Crown Forest Alejandra Sarabal tells us what to expect. [30:56.080 --> 31:01.760] California employers will no longer use the federal e-verify program to determine the eligibility [31:01.760 --> 31:07.520] of employees to work in the U.S. unless it's required by federal law. And employers will be [31:07.520 --> 31:13.440] banned from requesting consumer credit reports to evaluate employees unless the position they're [31:13.440 --> 31:19.440] applying for meets certain criteria. Now students who enter the country illegally will be eligible [31:19.440 --> 31:26.400] to receive private financial aid at public colleges. Now when it comes to your car, it can't be [31:26.400 --> 31:32.880] impounded at a sobriety checkpoint if the only offense is not having a valid license. Now starting [31:32.880 --> 31:41.200] January 1st, you can register to vote online and it will be illegal to sell, trade, and distribute [31:41.200 --> 31:50.960] shark fins. Alejandra Sarabal, Kwan For News. Well we have new laws for 2012 with the same [31:50.960 --> 31:57.760] weather pattern here as we had last year in 2011. Very dry and sunny. Now for tonight, clear skies [31:57.760 --> 32:01.840] over the bay but there are some clouds beginning to develop at the coast and those clouds are [32:01.840 --> 32:06.160] forecast to move into the bay overnight tonight. So for tomorrow morning, it's going to be a mostly [32:06.160 --> 32:12.400] cloudy start with some fog into the north bay valley. Visibility could be limited at times. As we [32:12.400 --> 32:16.400] go through the day, we're catching the tail end of a weather system and that's going to produce [32:16.400 --> 32:21.920] some clouds but it'll be a mixture of sunshine and some high clouds for the afternoon. No rain [32:21.920 --> 32:26.080] expected from this weather system, at least not here in the bay area. Temperature wise, [32:26.080 --> 32:31.600] 6 a.m. 30s, coolest valleys north and east, 40s by the bay and it's going to be getting to the [32:31.600 --> 32:36.160] afternoon. Because of the cloud cover, the temperatures will not be quite as mild as what [32:36.160 --> 32:42.400] we had today. So look for highs in the upper 50s in blue and some lower 60s in the green for the [32:42.400 --> 32:48.080] south bay. In the Sierra today, here's Lake Tahoe, heavenly, lots of sunshine, temperatures here [32:48.080 --> 32:53.680] today in the mid 50s and we're going to see more warm weather continue for the next few days. It'll [32:53.680 --> 33:00.320] be cloudy for Monday, Tuesday, sunny, possibly some record highs in the mid 50s and the dry [33:00.320 --> 33:04.960] weather continues for this week. I'll talk more about the forecast coming up in a few minutes. [33:04.960 --> 33:09.680] Vicki. Alright Brian, well with the winter rains yet to come, it's hard to imagine that this was the [33:09.680 --> 33:16.720] scene in the Delta just five years ago. 2006 came in with a huge storm that sent the Sacramento [33:16.720 --> 33:22.000] River spilling its banks, flooding thousands of acres and hundreds of homes. Now state planners [33:22.000 --> 33:27.200] are warning that more than the levees are substandard and without billions of dollars of repairs, [33:27.200 --> 33:32.320] they represent a danger to lives, agriculture and drinking water supplies. Crown First Catherine [33:32.320 --> 33:38.320] Heenan has details. The damage was easily visible from space. You can see the Sacramento River [33:38.320 --> 33:43.120] spread out over the surrounding countryside. The warnings have been coming in for years. [33:43.120 --> 33:47.360] There are two kinds of levees, those that have failed, those that will fail. Now the state has [33:47.360 --> 33:52.800] released its first comprehensive plan for fixing the aging flood control system. There are about [33:52.800 --> 33:58.800] 1500 miles of levees in the Sacramento River basin. More than half are classified as higher [33:58.800 --> 34:04.640] concern. The report was commissioned after the Hurricane Katrina disaster. It says that New [34:04.640 --> 34:11.040] Orleans is now protected from the kind of flood that could come once in 250 years. St. Louis is [34:11.040 --> 34:18.720] protected from a once in 500 years storm. For Sacramento, it's a once in 85 year storm. Fixing [34:18.720 --> 34:24.160] all of that will take money, of course. Five years ago, voters approved a five billion dollar bond [34:24.160 --> 34:29.840] measure. About half the money has been spent bringing the levee system into the 21st century. [34:29.840 --> 34:35.680] The latest estimate, another 12 billion will be needed to finish the job. The Central Valley [34:35.680 --> 34:41.280] Flood Protection Board has until June to approve that plan. A Georgia woman says that her two [34:41.280 --> 34:47.360] brothers successfully escaped from Alcatraz years ago. Marie Anglin Weidner says that her brothers [34:47.360 --> 34:52.560] are two of the three men credited with the only escape from Alcatraz. She says that they robbed [34:52.560 --> 34:58.880] in Alabama Bank with a toy gun back in 1958. They were captured but kept trying to escape from prison, [34:58.880 --> 35:05.120] so they were sent to Alcatraz. She believes that they're still alive today. The only reason they [35:05.120 --> 35:11.040] put them in Alcatraz was because they could not keep them anywhere else they put them. They kept [35:11.040 --> 35:18.160] getting away. We know they're okay. Weidner plans to come to San Francisco to mark the 50th anniversary [35:18.160 --> 35:23.360] of their escape this summer. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is moving ahead with its [35:23.360 --> 35:29.280] expansion plans. Here is a picture of before and after the expansion. Well, the Planning [35:29.280 --> 35:33.760] Commission has already approved the environmental impact report. Cronfort's Reggie Kumar shows [35:33.760 --> 35:39.920] people the new face of downtown San Francisco. SF MoMA officials tell Cronfort when they first [35:39.920 --> 35:46.080] moved into the current facilities in 1995, the museum housed 12,000 works. Since then, [35:46.080 --> 35:52.320] the collection has doubled in size and attendance has tripled. That's why the new gallery is needed. [35:52.320 --> 35:57.600] It will be constructed between Mina and Howard Streets and connect to the rear of the museum. [35:57.600 --> 36:03.040] Officials say once the new buildings open, they will have 130,000 square feet of space [36:03.040 --> 36:08.960] to enhance exhibits and expand educational programs. One of the architects said the design [36:08.960 --> 36:14.880] responds to the unique physical and urban terrain of San Francisco. Some have mixed feelings about [36:14.880 --> 36:40.480] how it's going to look. It's not exactly the most beautiful building that I've ever seen, [36:40.480 --> 36:45.040] but San Francisco is known for stepping outside of the box a little bit, so I don't think it's a [36:45.040 --> 36:50.400] horrible addition. If all goes as planned, the new museum will open up behind the existing one in [36:50.400 --> 36:58.560] 2016. The price tag $555 million. Nearly all of the funding is being raised through a private [36:58.560 --> 37:05.680] endowment. This is not a city or state funded project. In San Francisco, Reggie Kumar Cronfort [37:05.680 --> 37:10.400] News. Warning if you can't pay your creditors coming up, we're going to introduce you to one guy who [37:10.400 --> 37:15.040] ended up in jail. A Kansas man is paying a stiff price for furniture he bought back in 2008. He didn't pay [39:39.680 --> 39:44.160] his credit card bills and wound up in jail. And now he's warning others to pay attention when [39:44.160 --> 39:51.440] creditors take legal action. Mary Snow has more. For 57-year-old James Davis of Kansas, [39:51.440 --> 39:56.240] using a credit card to buy this computer and some furniture is haunting him in ways he never [39:56.240 --> 40:02.640] imagined. In 2008, when the economy went south, Davis lost his job and fell behind on bills. [40:02.640 --> 40:07.920] The creditor took him to court. Davis admits he didn't show up and a bench warrant was issued. [40:07.920 --> 40:12.160] But he says he thought he rectified the situation by reaching a pay plan agreement [40:12.160 --> 40:17.440] until he was arrested in January. I was confused. Of course, I was humiliated. [40:20.960 --> 40:27.280] Somewhat mental disorder, I guess you could say. Davis spent several hours in jail before getting [40:27.280 --> 40:34.240] out on $250 bond. But he's now suing for unfair debt collection practices. The creditor refutes [40:34.240 --> 40:39.360] that in a legal response to the suit, writing, the bench warrant was not issued for failure to [40:39.360 --> 40:44.880] make payments on the payment plan, but was issued for civil contempt for disobeying court orders. [40:45.680 --> 40:51.200] Outside of this case, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says there are others where people [40:51.200 --> 40:56.480] in debt are not aware that creditors are taking them to court and wind up arrested for not meeting [40:56.480 --> 41:01.360] a court date. It's a chain reaction that begins when they fail to pay their bills. [41:01.360 --> 41:05.440] In Illinois, and unfortunately, my understanding is in other states in this country, there are [41:05.440 --> 41:10.720] people who are being put into prison right now because they're poor, essentially. Madigan says [41:10.720 --> 41:16.000] there are no hard numbers and these kinds of cases are on track nationwide. But she worries [41:16.000 --> 41:20.960] about complaints she's receiving. A lot of it stems from what's known as debt buying. So there are [41:20.960 --> 41:26.400] debt buyers out there who are purchasing debt. And then again, they're using terribly aggressive [41:26.400 --> 41:32.960] and illegal, you know, tactics to collect it. But a trade group representing debt collectors says [41:32.960 --> 41:38.400] going to court to collect debt is a last resort. And a spokesman disputes the claim that people [41:38.400 --> 41:44.400] are going to jail for their debt. Dentist prisons are illegal in the United States. And so we're not [41:44.400 --> 41:50.480] seeing a return to debtor's prisons. What we are seeing is that somebody who owes a debt, [41:50.480 --> 41:56.880] and after many, many attempts to try to collect that debt, the creditor or the collector has [41:56.880 --> 42:02.800] taken the consumer to court. James Davis has a warning for others who have unpaid bills. [42:02.800 --> 42:12.080] If you have proper notice from a creditor and they are attempting to take you to court over [42:12.080 --> 42:18.240] that debt to pay very, very close attention to it. In response to complaints, the Federal Trade [42:18.240 --> 42:24.720] Commission says it's been encouraging states to make sure that consumers are notified if they are [42:24.720 --> 42:32.240] supposed to appear in court. Mary Snow, CNN, New York. First day of 2012, some gorgeous weather, [42:32.240 --> 42:38.160] sunshine and warm temperatures in the mid sixties around the bay are in mid to upper sixties, [42:38.160 --> 42:42.320] even 70 degrees today in Mountain View. Take advantage of attractive offers on the 2012 Acura TSX for well-qualified [45:13.200 --> 45:20.080] customers. A new roadhouse has joined the long list of Bay Area restaurants. Kath's Restaurant and [45:20.080 --> 45:24.080] Tavern opened last night just in time for New Year's Eve. Here's a look inside the colorful [45:24.080 --> 45:30.640] former stagecoach stop and Bordello. If you find yourself along Highway 17 in Las Gatis, [45:30.640 --> 45:36.400] there's a really cool new old roadhouse. In fact, it's so old. It was a stagecoach stop, [45:36.400 --> 45:41.440] among other things. Follow me. I guess I could saddle up to the bar. Yes, you certainly could. [45:41.440 --> 45:46.960] And have yourself a wonderful beer handcrafted. And just happen to be ready for me. So Mark Edwards, [45:46.960 --> 45:55.440] proprietor of Kath's Restaurant and Tavern. Yes. What's old is new again. My goal really was to [45:55.440 --> 46:02.560] keep it simple, yet have the best barbecue you could ever have. We have brought in a seven-time [46:02.560 --> 46:10.000] world champion barbecue chef, Paul Kirk. A lot of the chefs will say, Hickory calls them because [46:10.000 --> 46:13.040] it gives you that flavor. All right, let's check it out. And then we'll throw this [46:13.840 --> 46:21.680] piece of wood here in the fire box. And the smoking begins. That's quite a smoker. And it gives you [46:21.680 --> 46:28.640] the flavor that you would not believe. Right in here is our upstairs banquet room featuring our [46:28.640 --> 46:34.880] 300-year-old bar. Wow. So what's up with all these guns here? Well, it is an old stagecoach stop. [46:34.880 --> 46:40.880] So, you know, we thought how appropriate, but for the cowboys to leave their guns here at the bar. [46:40.880 --> 46:45.520] The last cowboy left this one. He'll be back in a week to pick it up. [46:47.040 --> 46:54.320] Is it true? This was once a cat house. So spoken. Yes, I believe so. I've heard that from numerous [46:54.320 --> 47:01.440] sources. If these walls could talk. Smoke chicken ribs or pulled pork all under $20. [47:01.440 --> 47:07.040] In Los Gatos, Vicki Leviakis, Cron for news. [47:08.480 --> 47:11.680] Well, apparently not just great food, but great entertainment there as well. [47:12.320 --> 47:18.080] Hazy skies from Twin Peaks today, looking across San Francisco with temperatures made it up to the [47:18.080 --> 47:23.360] low 60s. And Frank, our photographer, saying the most people he's ever seen up there at Twin Peaks, [47:23.360 --> 47:27.360] enjoying the view today on this New Year's Day. Right now, live Golden Gate Bridge, [47:27.360 --> 47:32.960] temperatures still mild right now. Most places checking in in the 50s, but it is a little bit [47:32.960 --> 47:41.120] cooler for Walnut Creek and Fairfield right now at 44 degrees. San Jose currently 53. Now, [47:41.120 --> 47:47.920] we do have a weather system that's rolling in for tonight. This should increase clouds for tomorrow, [47:47.920 --> 47:53.920] but once again, no chance for rain in the Bay Area. This pattern of dry weather will continue [47:53.920 --> 47:58.560] all the way. It started in November, December, one of the driest on record, and we're starting out [47:58.560 --> 48:04.640] January looking very dry as well. So for tomorrow morning, look for areas of low clouds and fog [48:04.640 --> 48:09.280] for the North Bay valleys. We will see some coastal clouds move into the bay for tonight [48:09.280 --> 48:13.280] after midnight temperatures mid 40s for tomorrow morning by the bay. [48:14.160 --> 48:19.200] Mid to upper 30s for the inland valleys. And as we go through the day, we'll see things warm up [48:19.200 --> 48:25.280] into the upper 50s and low 60s. Here's future cast at midnight tonight. Mainly clear, but watch [48:25.280 --> 48:29.840] these clouds begin to fill into the bay during the overnight. So we become mostly cloudy for [48:29.840 --> 48:35.040] tomorrow morning. There's the weather system up on the north coast, producing rain shaded in green [48:35.040 --> 48:40.560] and yellow, but this will move inland and not impact the Bay Area, at least with any rain. We [48:40.560 --> 48:45.760] will see clouds through the day. It'll be partly sunny for the afternoon, mixture of clouds and [48:45.760 --> 48:50.400] sunshine. Then those clouds begin to clear as we get into the evening. High temperatures for the [48:50.400 --> 48:56.240] day, not quite as warm tomorrow as what we saw today because of the clouds. Still pretty nice, [48:56.240 --> 49:02.800] though. Low to mid 60s for the South Bay. Upper 50s, low 60s inland valleys conquered Martinez, [49:02.800 --> 49:08.480] Walnut Creek 59 degrees. Look for highs in the upper 50s and low 60s for the east shore. [49:09.360 --> 49:14.640] We'll have the clouds in the morning and then for the afternoon, a mixture of sunshine and high thin [49:14.640 --> 49:21.520] clouds. Mid to upper 50s, San Francisco Ocean Beach Daily City Pacifica Redwood City up to 61 degrees, [49:21.520 --> 49:27.760] could see some heavy fog here for the North Bay valleys at least early on patchy fog. Santa Rosa [49:27.760 --> 49:34.480] Fairfield upper 50s, low 60s here. Here's the seven day around the bay and more dry weather is the [49:34.480 --> 49:40.080] theme here as we go into 2012 for Tuesday and Wednesday. It's going to be nice though. Lots [49:40.080 --> 49:46.640] of sunshine, highs in the mid to upper 60s. There may be some low 70s around the bay area. For Thursday [49:46.640 --> 49:50.800] there's another weather system, but like the one that's coming through tomorrow, this one too, [49:50.800 --> 49:56.240] all the rain to the north of the bay area. We'll see a few clouds and then mostly sunny into next [49:56.240 --> 50:02.160] weekend. Vicki Tom Cruise continues to draw moviegoers and Kirstie Alley wants you to resolve [50:02.160 --> 50:10.560] to dance in 2012. Michelle Wright has all your entertainment news in today's Hollywood Minute. [50:10.560 --> 50:15.600] Mission impossible ghost protocol was the top draw at the box office over the New Year's weekend. [50:15.600 --> 50:20.080] The film starring Tom Cruise held on to the number one spot for the second weekend in a row [50:20.080 --> 50:26.320] with an estimated $31.3 million in ticket sales. Sherlock Holmes, a game of shadows, [50:26.320 --> 50:32.240] stayed in second place, pulling in slightly more than $22 million. And Alvin and the Chipmunks, [50:32.240 --> 50:38.640] Chipwrecked, held steady in third with $18.3 million in ticket sales. Hollywood is most likely [50:38.640 --> 50:44.400] glad to bid farewell to 2011. Hollywood.com reports it was the slowest year at the box [50:44.400 --> 50:51.520] office since 1995, 16 years ago. If you've resolved to lose weight in 2012, Kirstie Alley [50:51.520 --> 50:57.120] wants to help you dance away the pounds. On New Year's Day, the actress launched 100 Days of Dance, [50:57.120 --> 51:02.640] a campaign to encourage Americans to dance for 100 consecutive days to lose weight and get [51:02.640 --> 51:09.040] healthy. Participants can sign up for free on 100daysofdance.com where Alley plans to upload [51:09.040 --> 51:14.720] videos of herself dancing every day. She tells people.com she wants everyone to have an experience [51:14.720 --> 51:20.720] like she did on Dancing with the Stars. Alley lost weight on the show and says she stays in shape by [51:20.720 --> 51:26.640] dancing an hour or two a day and following a diet plan. For Hollywood Minute, I'm Michelle Wright.
