[00:04.720 --> 00:08.680] The Bay Area's major news of the day, Frank Somerville, Julie Hanger, [00:08.800 --> 00:14.080] the 10 o'clock news on KTVU Channel 2, complete Bay Area news coverage. [00:18.480 --> 00:23.280] Occupy Oakland and Oscar Grant supporters joined forces today to make a point, [00:23.280 --> 00:28.200] but will the alliance be lifelong or grow uneasy as 2012 unfolds? [00:28.200 --> 00:34.920] Cell phone video shows the ferocious flames they consume to house just minutes into the new year. [00:35.560 --> 00:40.280] And a new year means new laws will tell you which ones could impact you the most. [00:41.160 --> 00:48.200] Complete Bay Area news coverage starts right now. This is KTVU Channel 2 News at 5. [00:49.080 --> 00:51.400] Good evening, I'm Ken Pritchett and tonight for Ken Wayne. [00:51.400 --> 00:57.000] And I'm Heather Holmes, a rally today to mark the third anniversary of the death of a man shot [00:57.000 --> 01:01.960] and killed by bar police. Today's demonstration honored passenger Oscar Grant, [01:01.960 --> 01:06.040] but it also was a rallying point for the waning Occupy movement. [01:06.040 --> 01:11.240] KTVU's Patty Lee was with marchers today who tell her they have plans for the new year. Patty? [01:11.880 --> 01:16.760] Well, more than 120 protesters marched for an hour and a half to get here from Franco Gala Plaza. [01:16.760 --> 01:21.240] Now, the vigil is ending just about now behind that kiosk. You can see folks are starting to [01:21.240 --> 01:26.920] leave and to get onto buses. Now, today's events were organized by both the Oscar Grant Committee [01:26.920 --> 01:28.760] and by Occupy Oakland. [01:33.800 --> 01:37.400] Three years after he was shot and killed by a Bart police officer, [01:37.400 --> 01:42.040] Oscar Grant has become a martyr of sorts for the Occupy Oakland movement. [01:42.040 --> 01:46.840] Where the Occupy and Oscar Grant issues overlap is around police brutality. [01:51.080 --> 01:56.360] More than 120 protesters gathered to remember Grant at Franco Gala Plaza this afternoon. [01:56.360 --> 02:02.040] Before marching to the Fruitvale Bard Station, where Grant, unarmed, hands behind his back, [02:02.040 --> 02:06.280] was killed New Year's Day 2009. It's real emotional for me because... [02:07.160 --> 02:11.240] Earlier, Oscar Grant's family gathered there for a private memorial service. [02:11.800 --> 02:17.560] It's a day for us to remember Oscar and to not forget what happened to him. [02:17.560 --> 02:21.720] Grant's mother says Oscar's legacy lies in ending police brutality [02:21.720 --> 02:27.000] and holding officers accountable for their actions. As for the legacy of Occupy Oakland, [02:27.000 --> 02:28.200] undetermined. [02:28.200 --> 02:30.200] I feel that there's a lot of different people [02:30.840 --> 02:33.800] rallying for different things in the Occupy movement. [02:33.800 --> 02:37.160] Grant's family says the groups may not be entirely in sync, [02:37.160 --> 02:39.560] but it is grateful for Occupy support. [02:39.560 --> 02:44.760] I want to keep Oscar's name and memory alive as long as we can. [02:44.760 --> 02:49.240] But others in the Grant camp are worried that if the Occupy Oakland movement [02:49.240 --> 02:54.360] embraces civil disobedience in the year ahead, it may dilute the message they share. [02:54.360 --> 02:59.320] They're not supposed to be doing things that I'm setting and disrupting anyone else. [03:00.600 --> 03:06.440] Oscar isn't about that. And if they want to use his name, they need to be doing the correct thing. [03:08.520 --> 03:12.600] Occupy Oakland organizers say they do have some New Year's resolutions, [03:12.600 --> 03:17.880] one of which is to occupy a building this month so they can stop being harassed [03:17.880 --> 03:22.760] at their outdoor encampment. Reporting live in Oakland, Patty Lee, KTVU, Channel 2 News. [03:23.640 --> 03:28.920] Violence marred New Years in Oakland as police responded to gunfire on 14th and Franklin [03:28.920 --> 03:33.800] streets this morning. When police arrived around 2 a.m., they found a woman with a gunshot wound [03:33.800 --> 03:39.320] to her hand. As they investigated the shooting, a car drove up with another woman who had been shot [03:39.320 --> 03:44.360] in her leg. Police say the shootings are unrelated. Both women are being treated at the hospital. [03:44.360 --> 03:46.920] No arrests have been made in either shooting. [03:46.920 --> 03:52.600] Oakland police announced a $5,000 reward this afternoon for information on the shooter who [03:52.600 --> 03:57.000] fatally wounded a five-year-old boy on International Boulevard Friday night. [03:57.000 --> 04:03.080] Gabriel Martinez Jr. was outside his family's taco truck on 54th Avenue when a man ordered [04:03.080 --> 04:08.280] some food and then turned around and sprayed the truck with gunfire. The suspect then drove away [04:08.280 --> 04:13.800] in a silver Pontiac with a female passenger. Oakland's homicide total last year rose for the [04:13.800 --> 04:21.640] first time in four years. The city's official count for 2011 is 103 homicides. That's 11 more [04:21.640 --> 04:28.040] than in 2010. Five-year-old Gabriel Martinez was the third young child killed by gunfire in Oakland [04:28.040 --> 04:36.040] in 2011. Three-year-old Carlos Nava and 23-year-old Hiram Lawrence Jr. were also shot and killed. [04:36.040 --> 04:41.480] Petaluma police have identified an alleged drunk driver suspected of hitting a 15-year-old boy [04:41.480 --> 04:46.680] who was at a crosswalk. Investigators say 20-year-old Wesley Pickford of Nevada [04:46.680 --> 04:51.480] failed to stop at East Washington and Edith Streets, striking the teen in the crosswalk [04:51.480 --> 04:57.160] there around 12.30 a.m. The boy is listed in stable condition, but with serious injuries, [04:57.160 --> 05:04.360] Pickford was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on $30,000 bail. The CHP is reporting two fatality [05:04.360 --> 05:09.400] fatal DUI related crashes in the Bay Area so far this New Year's holiday weekend. [05:09.400 --> 05:14.520] Now that's actually down from four fatalities for the same time last year. The number of DUI [05:14.520 --> 05:22.040] arrests is up with a total of 161 arrests compared to 124 last year. Those numbers though are [05:22.040 --> 05:27.320] expected to rise when the CHP releases the totals from its maximum enforcement effort, [05:27.320 --> 05:33.320] which ends Monday at midnight. Now to the South Bay where a family there is starting the new year [05:33.320 --> 05:39.080] in temporary housing. After a three-alarm fire gutted the historic San Jose home they lived in [05:39.080 --> 05:43.320] and less than an hour into the new year. Katie's Marine Nailer obtained cell phone [05:43.320 --> 05:48.680] videos showing the challenge firefighters faced. It's gone. Everything's gone my whole life. [05:48.680 --> 05:54.040] Elizabeth Swar is never thought she'd start 2012 barefoot outside the historic downtown San Jose [05:54.040 --> 06:00.600] house she's rented for the past five years. No shoes, no nothing. I mean I got nothing. I don't [06:00.600 --> 06:06.840] have my purse, ID, nothing. Everything's just gone. Everything she says, but this basket of laundry. [06:06.840 --> 06:10.440] Firefighters are still investigating what caused the fire at this Victorian home [06:10.440 --> 06:15.800] just 50 minutes into the new year. A neighbor shot this cell phone video showing flames consuming [06:15.800 --> 06:21.560] the attic and first floor. Suarez says she, her two teenage children and a friend were sleeping [06:21.560 --> 06:26.600] inside when the smoke detector went off. It started in my son's room because my friend woke [06:26.600 --> 06:31.800] us up and said he smelled smoke and that's when the smoke came and then we opened the door and [06:31.800 --> 06:35.880] flames were just all over the place and I just immediately got my kids up it's get up get up [06:35.880 --> 06:40.600] there's a fire. They were fighting a difficult battle from the start. Difficult fire captain [06:40.600 --> 06:45.960] Rob Brown says because these historic homes often lack fire breaks. When we get fires like this we [06:45.960 --> 06:50.600] can end up with fire in the basement and the attic and the fire floor within minutes. Everyone [06:50.600 --> 06:55.640] escaped safely but the home on North Fifth Street which is part of San Jose's Hensley historic district [06:55.640 --> 07:01.960] was severely damaged. It's sad I mean basically we lose these by fire that's about the you know [07:01.960 --> 07:05.960] unfortunately they're protected but you can't protect them from fire. Firefighters estimate [07:05.960 --> 07:10.280] the damage of at least a half a million dollars. The family says the Red Cross is putting them up [07:10.280 --> 07:14.920] for a few days until they can figure out where they're going to live next. In San Jose, Maureen [07:14.920 --> 07:21.640] Naylor KTVU Channel 2 News. It is a new year and with that come several new laws for California [07:21.640 --> 07:27.720] whether it's how you buckle up your kids in the car or what types of treatment medical insurance [07:27.720 --> 07:33.640] must cover. There is a good chance one of these new laws will apply to you. Now KTVU's Claudine Wong [07:33.640 --> 07:39.160] will detail some of those new laws coming up later in the newscast. The squirrel monkey named [07:39.160 --> 07:44.520] Banana Sam is back in his enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo this evening. The 17 year old [07:44.520 --> 07:49.560] squirrel monkey was found yesterday afternoon by a man in Stern Grove Park about a mile from the [07:49.560 --> 07:56.040] zoo. The unidentified man coaxed the tiny monkey back into his backpack and then that man called [07:56.040 --> 08:01.480] police who took him to the zoo. Officials there say the monkey was scared and hungry but otherwise [08:01.480 --> 08:07.320] healthy. Banana Sam was either taken or escaped from his enclosure on Thursday night after someone [08:07.320 --> 08:12.840] cut the fencing. The man who found the monkey was questioned and is not considered a suspect. [08:12.840 --> 08:17.800] Well it may be January 1st but it didn't feel much like winter today across the Bay Area. [08:17.800 --> 08:22.680] Chrissy Field in San Francisco was just one of the many places where people went for a walk, [08:22.680 --> 08:27.960] run or play fetch with their dog wearing only short sleeves maybe even a light jacket. Temperatures [08:27.960 --> 08:33.640] across the Bay Area were as much as 10 degrees above average today and we've seen less than half [08:33.640 --> 08:39.000] the normal rainfall for the season. With more on our very mild and dry weather we go to our [08:39.000 --> 08:43.720] meteorologist Mark Tamayo. Mark? Heather in fact we're taking a live look outside right now looking [08:43.720 --> 08:47.880] on toward the beautiful San Francisco Bay. The high clouds have been increasing over the past [08:47.880 --> 08:52.280] a few hours and those clouds will be factors we do head into it tomorrow but most of the Bay Area [08:52.280 --> 08:58.600] warmed up into the 60s this afternoon mid and upper 60s as the high clouds spill into the region. [08:58.600 --> 09:03.240] Temperatures will be cooling off back down into the 30s and 40s. As you can't pick out on live [09:03.240 --> 09:08.440] storm track or two on the satellite we can't show you this as we take a look at our next source. [09:08.440 --> 09:12.280] There you can't pick out on live storm track or two. Just a few high clouds approaching like [09:12.280 --> 09:16.600] Cape Mendocino and the bulk of the moisture out here in the Pacific. There is a very weak [09:16.600 --> 09:21.000] weather system approaching our coastline that will have an effect on our forecast for tomorrow. [09:21.000 --> 09:25.480] With that we do bring in just a slight chance of some drizzle up in the North Bay or a few [09:25.480 --> 09:30.680] sprinkles but we should be cooling things off as we do head into your Monday. As far as this [09:30.680 --> 09:34.920] rain-free weather I'll let you know if we have any rain clouds coming up in that five day forecast [09:34.920 --> 09:39.400] in your full update in just a few minutes. Alright thanks Mark. Well today and tomorrow [09:39.400 --> 09:44.920] are spare the air days which means of course wood burning is banned. The Bay Area Air Quality [09:44.920 --> 09:49.480] District says the lack of wind is creating unhealthy air which can be problematic for [09:49.480 --> 09:55.240] those with breathing problems. Now tomorrow's spare the air day will be the 12th this season [09:55.240 --> 10:00.920] compared to four last season. Tens of thousands of people rang in new year along San Francisco's [10:00.920 --> 10:11.080] Embarcadero this morning. The chilly temperatures didn't keep people away from the open air party [10:11.080 --> 10:17.160] with many dressed in warm jackets and others with top hats and tuxedos. Many revelers found it hard [10:17.160 --> 10:23.000] to move through the crowd as the clock approached midnight. Taxis and public transit ran into the [10:23.000 --> 10:33.960] early morning hours getting people back home. Hundreds of thousands crowded into New York's [10:33.960 --> 10:40.520] Times Square to watch the ball drop. The party left plenty of work for 149 sanitation workers [10:40.520 --> 10:46.040] who converged on the area this morning picking up 50 tons of party hats empty containers and [10:46.040 --> 10:53.720] confetti with 22 trucks 24 sweepers and 37 backpack blowers. Well the stroke of midnight rang in more [10:53.720 --> 10:59.160] than the new year for one San Lorenzo family. It also brought them their first baby girl. [10:59.160 --> 11:04.120] May we introduce you now to little Sophia Trageros. According to those at Eden Medical Center in [11:04.120 --> 11:11.000] Castro Valley Sophia is the first baby born in the Bay Area in 2012. Amelia Trageros says Sophia [11:11.000 --> 11:16.760] wasn't actually due until January 3rd but around 5 30 last night she went into labor and the family [11:16.760 --> 11:21.880] had their fingers crossed that baby would wait until midnight. She gets to count on to her [11:21.880 --> 11:27.000] birthday every year. She's gonna think all the fireworks are for her and they are for her right? [11:27.000 --> 11:32.280] Sophia waited at seven pounds five ounces and was a little more than 19 inches long and when [11:32.280 --> 11:38.280] Sophia goes home well she will be greeted by four older brothers. Police in Washington state are [11:38.280 --> 11:44.440] looking for a gunman who shot and killed a park ranger on Mount Rainier also ahead. It will be a [11:44.440 --> 11:49.720] restless night for some people living in the LA area as the community braces for more arson. [11:50.280 --> 11:56.040] Also the final push is now underway in Iowa as GOP hopeful stuff for votes ahead of Tuesday's [11:56.040 --> 12:11.960] caucuses. And new figures are out on just how much money was lost in the Bay Area housing market. [12:26.120 --> 12:31.560] Come in now. Get 1000 more for your trade and start the new year in style. [13:37.160 --> 13:40.440] Sometimes your best singing is done not behind the microphone [13:40.440 --> 13:47.800] Home is whenever I'm with you. But behind the wheel. A home, let me come home. [13:48.440 --> 13:54.600] Home is whenever I'm with you. Wonder what you'll sound like in a Hyundai. [13:55.880 --> 14:01.640] Now you can lease the 2012 Santa Fe for just $2.69 a month during Hyundai holidays, [14:01.640 --> 14:04.040] but only at your Bay Area Hyundai dealers. [14:04.040 --> 14:12.360] A man hand is underway at this hour on Washington's Mount Rainier after a gunman shot [14:12.360 --> 14:18.360] and killed a park ranger. The government is believed to be somewhere in the expansive national park. [14:18.360 --> 14:24.600] Authorities say around 10 30 this morning, a ranger tried to pull over the suspect for a suspect [14:24.600 --> 14:30.200] rather for a routine traffic stop. But when the driver didn't stop 34 year old park ranger Margaret [14:30.200 --> 14:35.240] Anderson set up her vehicle as a roadblock. When the suspect arrived at the roadblock, [14:35.240 --> 14:39.880] he got out of his car and shot and killed Anderson. Police and firefighters in the [14:39.880 --> 14:46.120] Los Angeles area are on high alert tonight as they deal with 39 arson's. This car fire in [14:46.120 --> 14:51.400] West Hollywood was one of seven new fires that broke out just overnight. The car fires have [14:51.400 --> 14:57.640] often spread to nearby apartment complexes and heavily damaged a home once owned by Jim Morrison. [14:57.640 --> 15:02.520] Since the arson outbreak began late Thursday, authorities have been working around the clock [15:02.520 --> 15:08.200] to try to find the firebuck. The acts we've seen over the last 72 hours here in these communities [15:08.200 --> 15:13.480] have kept these public safety professionals up at night working tirelessly. Since December 30th, [15:13.480 --> 15:18.760] the Los Angeles Fire Department alone has responded to over 3,300 calls for service in the city. [15:20.040 --> 15:25.640] A white male in his mid 30s with a ponytail was spotted by a parking garage security camera, [15:25.640 --> 15:30.520] but it is unclear tonight if he is the sole arsonist or if some of those fires are being [15:30.520 --> 15:37.560] set now by copycats. California faces new budget woes this year as $1 billion in automatic cuts [15:37.560 --> 15:42.840] are triggered by a shortfall in last year's tax revenue. Most of those cuts will come out of [15:42.840 --> 15:48.440] higher education, but already hit hard by a 16% drop in overall state spending since the start [15:48.440 --> 15:54.200] of the recession. Governor Brown is proposing a ballot measure that would raise $7 billion a year [15:54.200 --> 15:59.800] by raising state income taxes on the wealthy and increasing the sales tax on everyone else. [15:59.800 --> 16:06.840] If nothing is done, California will face another $13 billion in cuts over the next year and a half. [16:06.840 --> 16:13.640] Exxon has won a large award in a dispute with Venezuela. Back in 2007, President Hugo Chavez's [16:13.640 --> 16:19.880] government nationalized a reserve that contained an Exxon oil project. Well, today the oil company [16:19.880 --> 16:26.200] announced the International Chamber of Commerce awarded it nearly $908 million. The commerce [16:26.200 --> 16:31.800] body found Venezuela's state oil company was liable for that takeover. Venezuela has not [16:31.800 --> 16:39.240] commented yet on the award to Exxon. Republicans hoping to win the Iowa caucus took to the [16:39.240 --> 16:45.080] airwaves today, making their final case before Tuesday's vote. Also today, a newspaper endorsement [16:45.080 --> 16:51.080] supported Mitt Romney's narrow lead in the polls, but the final results are up for grabs with many [16:51.080 --> 16:56.920] Iowa voters still undecided. Reporter Barbara Hall has the latest on the campaign trail. [16:56.920 --> 17:02.520] A political fight to the finish line before the first real voting of the 2012 presidential race. [17:02.520 --> 17:07.640] The latest Des Moines Register poll shows Mitt Romney and Ron Paul neck and neck. [17:07.640 --> 17:14.120] Paul says his campaign is picking up momentum. We're doing very, very well and people should [17:14.120 --> 17:17.720] just be a little bit patient. You know, on Tuesday we're going to find out a lot more about the [17:17.720 --> 17:23.160] future of this election. Rival Mitt Romney is narrowly leading among caucus goers. On Sunday, [17:23.160 --> 17:28.440] he picked up another endorsement from Iowa newspaper, The Quad City Times. Former Senator [17:28.440 --> 17:33.720] Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania rounded out the top three in the poll. My surge is going to come on [17:33.720 --> 17:39.240] January 3rd. After the people of Iowa do what they do, which is actually analyze the candidates, [17:39.240 --> 17:43.960] figure out where their positions are, find out who's the right leader, who's got what [17:43.960 --> 17:49.240] it takes to defeat Barack Obama and to lead this country. Iowa's governor seems to agree. [17:49.240 --> 17:56.200] My goal is as governor, unite the Republican Party, attract the independence and defeat [17:56.200 --> 18:01.080] Obama. We launched him, we want to sink him. Also on the campaign trail Sunday, Newt Gingrich, [18:01.080 --> 18:06.600] Rick Perry and Michelle Bachman stumping in Iowa, while John Huntsman focuses on New Hampshire, [18:06.600 --> 18:11.480] which votes a week after the Iowa caucus. I'm Barbara Hall reporting. [18:11.480 --> 18:16.600] And as the presidential race heats up, you could be asked to share your opinion. The [18:16.600 --> 18:21.880] nonprofit, nonpartisan Pew Research Center is one of the largest pollsters in the nation. [18:21.880 --> 18:25.880] And while many people say they don't have time for a poll, some question why they've never [18:25.880 --> 18:33.000] been asked for their opinion. There are 220 or 30 million adults in the United States. [18:33.000 --> 18:38.840] Our typical survey will interview 1500. Even over the course of a year, the chance that we would [18:38.840 --> 18:46.680] call any given individual is only about one in 150,000. Collars are never told who is actually [18:46.680 --> 18:51.640] conducting the poll to prevent the survey from being influenced by partisan feelings of either [18:51.640 --> 18:56.840] the poll takers or those who answer the poll. Authorities at Kennedy Airport in New York arrested [18:56.840 --> 19:02.840] a college student from China who they say tried to bring a stun gun on board a plane. The TSA says [19:02.840 --> 19:07.560] a screener noticed something looking like a flashlight in the woman's luggage. Upon further [19:07.560 --> 19:11.800] inspection, the screener saw that it was a stun gun. The college student told reporters [19:11.800 --> 19:18.280] she pleaded not guilty and believes her case will result in a fine. A member of the U.S. [19:18.280 --> 19:23.880] military is in custody tonight facing charges of attempting to bring explosives onto an airplane. [19:23.880 --> 19:30.040] The FBI says 30-year-old Trace Scott Atwater was stopped Saturday at a security checkpoint [19:30.040 --> 19:36.600] at Midland Airport in Texas. Searchers say they found explosives in his bag in what are being called [19:36.600 --> 19:42.520] military-grade wrappings. Atwater is stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and was in Midland [19:42.520 --> 19:48.280] visiting family. His arraignment is set for Tuesday. Air travel fatalities worldwide fell [19:48.280 --> 19:54.520] dramatically last year. There were 401 deaths on commercial and charter aircraft in 2011 [19:54.520 --> 20:01.320] compared to 726 in 2010. Now excluding acts of terrorism, the number of air travel related [20:01.320 --> 20:07.640] fatalities has fallen steadily since 1990 with airline experts crediting better pilot training [20:07.640 --> 20:12.920] and safer airplanes. British aviation research company Ascend says your odds of dying on a [20:12.920 --> 20:18.840] commercial flight are one in seven million. New figures out today show how hard the recession [20:18.840 --> 20:23.960] has hit the Bay Area housing market. In an analysis for the San Jose Mercury News, [20:23.960 --> 20:28.920] data quick reports that local homes lost more than a third of a trillion dollars during the [20:28.920 --> 20:36.280] past four years. Homes in Oakland lost an average of $350,000. In Concord, the average loss was [20:36.280 --> 20:45.720] $289,000 with $267,000 in San Jose and $205,000 in San Francisco. Home equity loans have dropped [20:45.720 --> 20:54.200] about 90% since 2007. NASA says two identical probes are now circling the moon. The two spacecraft [20:54.200 --> 21:00.280] are part of a mission called GRAIL, short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory. [21:00.280 --> 21:05.080] They were designed to map the moon's gravity field in an effort to understand [21:05.080 --> 21:09.560] what is below the moon's surface. NASA engineers plan to maneuver the two orbiters [21:09.560 --> 21:16.600] closer to the moon and start the mapping in March. Some Occupy protesters are facing charges here, [21:16.600 --> 21:21.640] what they are accused of and why some fellow activists are distancing themselves. Also ahead, [21:21.640 --> 21:27.320] here, what's behind new missile testing today in Iran. Also coming up, we will have details [21:27.320 --> 21:32.520] on a new program for veterans that makes the transition from combat to the classroom a little [21:32.520 --> 21:39.960] easier. [24:08.760 --> 24:13.240] In news of the world tonight in Iran today, state television aired video of an Iranian [24:13.240 --> 24:19.400] Navy ship test firing a surface to air missile during a drill near the Strait of Hormuz. [24:19.400 --> 24:24.680] A leading Iranian lawmaker said the drill is practiced for closing the waterway if the West [24:24.680 --> 24:31.320] blocks Iran's oil sales. Also today, Iran's nuclear agency claimed workers have made and tested [24:31.320 --> 24:37.400] the first nuclear fuel rod. Now this news comes a day after Iran called for a new round of talks [24:37.400 --> 24:43.240] about its nuclear program. In Syria today, Arab League monitors remained in the country despite [24:43.240 --> 24:48.920] calls for them to leave from inside the Arab League itself. The head of an advisory panel said the [24:48.920 --> 24:54.280] monitors are instead giving Syrian president Assad a cover to allow his forces to continue [24:54.280 --> 24:59.880] killing civilians. The monitors are supposed to be ensuring Syria complies with terms of the Arab [24:59.880 --> 25:06.120] League's plan to end the nine month old crackdown on dissent that has not yet happened. And in [25:06.120 --> 25:11.080] England today, nine year old Prince Philip was seen by the public for the first time since his [25:11.080 --> 25:16.600] emergency heart surgery. Doctors implanted a coronary stent after the prince went to a hospital [25:16.600 --> 25:21.400] with chest pains. The Queen's husband walked about 400 yards today to attend New Year's Day [25:21.400 --> 25:26.920] services. His wife, Queen Elizabeth, rode that distance in a limousine. Men and women returning [25:26.920 --> 25:32.600] from wars overseas are coming home to a weak economy and high unemployment. Those who choose [25:32.600 --> 25:38.840] to go to college, however, will have some help. Reporter Anita Vogel talked to one veteran injured [25:38.840 --> 25:44.440] in Iraq who was getting help to go to college. Biggest thing was the economy took a dump on me [25:44.440 --> 25:48.760] right when I was getting out of the service. But California's Veterans Affairs Department is [25:48.760 --> 25:55.480] simplifying the transition from combat to the classroom. After signing up, vets get an email [25:55.480 --> 26:01.080] list of colleges in their zip code along with financial aid information. Much of their application [26:01.080 --> 26:06.840] is even filled out for them using data from their military forms, making it easier for vets like [26:06.840 --> 26:11.960] Ariza to get the ball rolling. I was a little lost at first and afraid to do it. I wanted to go to [26:11.960 --> 26:18.200] school, but just did not know how to even make the first step, even applying for school. That's [26:18.200 --> 26:23.800] changing and California hopes it will become a model for other states to help vets with their [26:23.800 --> 26:30.280] first steps back into civilian life. Our veterans have made a sacrifice for our country and they [26:30.280 --> 26:35.480] certainly deserve a helping hand when they come home. This is a joint venture between the California [26:35.480 --> 26:41.080] Department of Veterans Affairs and the California Community Colleges. Each year, 30,000 men and [26:41.080 --> 26:47.960] women return home from the service to civilian life in California. In Los Angeles, Anita Vogel [26:47.960 --> 26:54.600] Fox News. Four men in North Carolina are facing arson charges for burning two American flags near [26:54.600 --> 27:00.360] an Occupy camp. It happened yesterday at the Occupy Charlotte camp. One of the men who was [27:00.360 --> 27:05.640] arrested says he burned the flags to inspire people to take more direct action in response to [27:05.640 --> 27:12.280] the world's problems. The flag burning upset other occupiers. Some of them decided to leave the Occupy [27:12.280 --> 27:18.920] camp after hearing the news. Do formally apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions. However, [27:18.920 --> 27:24.040] I do not apologize for the burning of the flag as it is my constitutional right to do so. These [27:24.040 --> 27:29.400] people are not members of the Occupy movement. They're campers. I'm an occupier because I'm [27:29.400 --> 27:37.160] occupying ethics, morality, principles, ideas, ways to move our country forward. As a group, [27:37.160 --> 27:42.680] Occupy Charlotte also made it clear that it does not support the burning of the flag. In Southern [27:42.680 --> 27:47.240] California, members of the Occupy movement are getting ready to march along the route for the [27:47.240 --> 27:53.080] Tournament of Roses Parade. In addition to a huge U.S. Constitution, they will have a massive [27:53.080 --> 27:59.480] octopus with tentacles meant to symbolize Wall Street's influence on American society. Pasadena [27:59.480 --> 28:05.560] city officials gave the okay for the occupiers to march after the rose parade itself has finished. [28:05.560 --> 28:10.200] Well, it was a violent night in the South Bay. Here, what led up to the stabbings and shootings [28:10.200 --> 28:16.280] that kept San Jose police officers very busy last night. And with the new year comes new laws on [28:16.280 --> 28:22.200] the books, some of which are controversial. Also, what one lawmaker wants to do to prevent violent [28:22.200 --> 28:26.520] hazings, like the one that recently claimed the life of a Florida college student. [28:30.200 --> 28:34.440] Someone grabbed Sheldon's booty. You called the police because someone hacked your World of [28:34.440 --> 28:40.760] Warcraft account. Next big bet. What they used to call the American way. [30:24.600 --> 30:29.240] It still works here. Not a single layoff of a U.S. manufacturing worker. Not one. [30:29.240 --> 30:34.440] Not one. Doing things the right way. Quality. Building cars that Americans want. Right here in [30:34.440 --> 30:37.080] America. Hyundai is an all-American success story. [30:41.080 --> 30:48.440] Not near your TV. Every award-winning KTVU Channel 2 newscast now streams live on KTVU.com. [30:48.440 --> 30:56.200] Complete Bay Area news coverage. It was a violent start to the new year in San Jose with as many [30:56.200 --> 31:01.720] as 10 shooting and stabbing incidents from last night to early this morning. KTVU's Deborah [31:01.720 --> 31:08.120] Villalon joins us live from San Jose with what happened. Well we're downtown along the Guadalupe [31:08.120 --> 31:13.560] River where a man was walking about 10 o'clock last night when he was stabbed and that was just [31:13.560 --> 31:20.440] the beginning. Minutes later another 911 call came in for shots fired in a residential neighborhood. [31:20.440 --> 31:25.560] Officers found two wounded. One man and one juvenile. The two victims were at a New Year's Eve [31:25.560 --> 31:31.000] gathering on Ridge Glenway when that violence broke out. A neighbor tells us as his household [31:31.000 --> 31:37.080] watched TV they were startled by that gunfire. Well they were watching here and then we heard [31:37.080 --> 31:45.080] the gunshot with my son and then so I say well somebody's shooting you know. And just minutes [31:45.080 --> 31:51.800] into the new year more trouble this time on Skull Drive in San Jose. On this street a fight involving [31:51.800 --> 31:58.040] several people and when it was over six of them mostly teenagers went to the hospital with stab wounds. [31:58.040 --> 32:03.160] San Jose police haven't gotten back to us on what the brawl was all about. Neighbors who heard the [32:03.160 --> 32:09.880] screaming and sirens say this is generally a quiet area. I've been here more than 15 years [32:10.520 --> 32:15.320] and it's not it's not like that. It's not like that maybe it's people that come and [32:16.600 --> 32:23.400] decide to make parties and it happens. And back now closer to downtown the man stabbed near the [32:23.400 --> 32:29.400] river managed to walk to this street before bystanders called him an ambulance. Now only one victim [32:29.400 --> 32:35.080] we're aware of at the shooting has injuries that may be life threatening and as the night went on [32:35.080 --> 32:42.040] there were three other gunfire incidents into cars houses and groups of people but no one hit [32:42.040 --> 32:49.560] and several scattered stabbings as well. All of this police say is unfortunate but not unusual [32:49.560 --> 32:55.720] for New Year's Eve. We're live in San Jose Deborah Villalon KTVU Channel 2 News. While the Creek [32:55.720 --> 33:00.360] police have arrested two men in connection with a nightclub assault the attack happened early [33:00.360 --> 33:05.640] yesterday morning at the Vice Ultra Lounge on a Royal Way in Civic Drive. The victim says he was [33:05.640 --> 33:10.680] pistol whipped by a group of people. He suffered a serious but non-life threatening head injury. [33:10.680 --> 33:16.440] Now this is the same nightclub where a large fight broke out on November 27th with at least two people [33:16.440 --> 33:22.520] injured. New Year's Day always brings new laws and 2012 brings changes that affect not only how [33:22.520 --> 33:27.560] you buckle up your kids but also the medicine you buy and what your health insurance will cover. [33:27.560 --> 33:33.400] KTVU's Claudine Wong takes a look at some of the laws going into effect today. In the laundry list [33:33.400 --> 33:37.800] of laws going into effect today most people knew about the one affecting kids in car seats. [33:37.800 --> 33:42.680] Instead of six years old or 60 pounds new law says keep them in until they're eight or four foot [33:42.680 --> 33:48.520] nine. I didn't know about that one yet because I got a five year old here. Other laws target teens. [33:48.520 --> 33:53.480] They can't hop into a tanning booth or buy certain cough medicines and schools in a first for the [33:53.480 --> 33:58.840] nation now have to teach about gay and lesbian contributions in the classroom and have to develop [33:58.840 --> 34:03.240] plans to address gay and lesbian bullying in school. Schools and sports also affected with [34:03.240 --> 34:07.960] districts required to come up with a plan to address concussions in student athletes. Some [34:07.960 --> 34:13.080] question whether laws are necessary to make all this happen. I definitely understand that concern [34:13.080 --> 34:16.920] but when you look at each one individually it's kind of hard to argue against them. Some changes [34:16.920 --> 34:22.600] may not affect you. Janelle Hampton isn't worried about a ban on caffeinated beer. I do either beer [34:22.600 --> 34:29.800] or caffeine yeah so. Well that's good. You don't have to worry about it. I think I'll be okay. [34:29.800 --> 34:34.680] 2012 means gun owners have to change things up. They can no longer carry unloaded weapons in [34:34.680 --> 34:39.480] plain sight. Job seekers should remember most potential employers can no longer check your [34:39.480 --> 34:45.000] credit and if you have a child with autism health insurers are now required to cover treatments. [34:45.000 --> 34:50.040] And it's not just state laws bringing change. 2012 also means a plastic bag ban in San Jose, [34:50.040 --> 34:55.240] a minimum wage hike in San Francisco and yes PG&E rates going up too. In Oakland, [34:55.240 --> 35:01.080] Claudine Wong, KTVU, Channel 2 News. Other major new state laws include the DREAM Act which allows [35:01.080 --> 35:07.800] California public colleges to give private financial aid to illegal immigrants. 3,200 large [35:07.800 --> 35:12.680] California companies will have to report on whether their supply chains use slave labor. [35:12.680 --> 35:18.840] It's hoped a law banning shark fin soup will reduce the slaughter of sharks and on the local level [35:18.840 --> 35:24.440] outdoor smoking is banned in all public places in Alameda including sidewalks, outdoor worksites [35:24.440 --> 35:29.000] and work vehicles. California is cracking down on businesses such as home builders, [35:29.000 --> 35:33.640] paying employees cash under the table. The Chronicle reports this so-called underground [35:33.640 --> 35:39.960] economy costs the state $7 billion a year in lost revenues. Labor groups also save these [35:39.960 --> 35:45.640] businesses withhold payroll taxes for social security, Medicare and unemployment insurance. [35:45.640 --> 35:50.680] California has assembled a task force which includes the departments of industrial relations, [35:50.680 --> 35:56.520] employment development and the Board of Equalization. Unlicensed contractors face fines as well as [35:56.520 --> 36:02.760] jail time. A nationwide anti-hazing law could be introduced in Congress this month. Florida A&M [36:02.760 --> 36:07.560] University has come under close scrutiny since drum major Robert Champion died during a hazing [36:07.560 --> 36:14.040] ritual in November. The proposed law by a Florida congressman would strip financial aid from anyone [36:14.040 --> 36:19.800] sanctioned by a university for hazing or witnessing hazing and failing to report it, [36:19.800 --> 36:24.920] including the victim. The hazing measure comes as Congress considers anti-bullying legislation [36:24.920 --> 36:29.800] to protect school children. The corruption trial of former leaders of the Southern California [36:29.800 --> 36:35.320] city of Bell will proceed, at least for now. A state appellate court has dismissed and appealed [36:35.320 --> 36:41.080] by six former council members to charges that they padded their six-figure salaries without [36:41.080 --> 36:47.080] doing the required work. All six received thousands of dollars a month for work on council boards, [36:47.080 --> 36:52.280] which prosecutors say rarely have ever met. The former officials say they will appeal to the [36:52.280 --> 36:57.880] state Supreme Court. A San Jose based solar company has dropped plans to build a solar plant in [36:57.880 --> 37:04.360] Michigan. Global Watt blames the recession and competition from overseas for the cancellation. [37:04.360 --> 37:09.880] Saginaw, Michigan was to see 500 new jobs when plans for the factory were announced back in [37:09.880 --> 37:15.160] 2009. Officials there approved millions of dollars in incentives, but the money was never [37:15.160 --> 37:20.520] distributed because the jobs never happened. Blackbirds have fallen dead from the sky in [37:20.520 --> 37:25.720] essential Arkansas town for the second New Year's Eve in a row. Police are working with animal [37:25.720 --> 37:31.160] control officers to figure out the exact number of birds that were killed. Now it's not clear if [37:31.160 --> 37:36.040] year-end celebrations are again to blame. You may remember last year fireworks were blamed for the [37:36.040 --> 37:40.920] deaths of thousands of birds. Biologists said last year's deaths were caused by the birds being [37:40.920 --> 37:46.440] jolted by the fireworks and flying right into homes, cars, telephone poles, and even each other. [37:46.440 --> 37:51.640] Well, it has been dry in the Sierra. We'll tell you just how little snow has fallen in the Tahoe area [37:51.640 --> 37:57.080] so far this season. And will the dry weather around the Bay Area stick around? Channel 2 [37:57.080 --> 38:17.080] meteorologist Mark Tamayo will be here with a look at the forecast for the first week of 2012. [38:27.080 --> 38:42.520] Let's talk deals. Let's talk clearance. Let's talk Honda. During our end-of-year clearance event, [38:46.840 --> 38:52.040] you can drive home in a new Civic Accord or CRV with zero due at signing. That's right, [38:52.040 --> 38:59.480] zero down, zero first month payment, zero security deposit, and 0.9% APR. So hurry to your Northern [38:59.480 --> 39:08.600] California Honda dealer by January 3rd and let's talk savings. Honda smart. In the name of love, [39:08.600 --> 39:13.800] a musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. takes place January 15th at the Paramount Theater [39:13.800 --> 39:22.440] in Oakland. Visit MLKTribute.com. Henry. Okay, I don't know where he is. Maybe he went outside. [39:22.440 --> 39:27.240] I have a dog. And you know, if you have a dog, you need to get your carpet cleaned at least [39:27.240 --> 39:33.160] twice a year. Court can do everything. They clean your carpet, your upholstery, your drapes, and now [39:33.160 --> 39:38.760] they even clean your air duct. Call right now and save 50% on carpet cleaning. Hurry. This offer [39:38.760 --> 39:49.400] is good this week only. I'm a real person. I'm not an actress. This year, I decided to spare no [39:49.400 --> 39:57.160] expense for our holiday dinner. So I hired renowned chef Gordon Ramsay. Oh, come on. It's disgusting. [39:57.160 --> 40:02.680] On you. What are you doing? It's raw, you idiot. This is your first day. Congratulations. It's [40:02.680 --> 40:07.880] your last. Get out of here. At a time when it's easy to go overboard. Happy holidays. [40:07.880 --> 40:12.760] Acura invites you to be smarter and over save during the season of reason sales event. Take [40:12.760 --> 40:17.240] advantage of attractive offers on the 2012 Acura TSX for well qualified customers. [40:19.240 --> 40:23.400] Resolutions. Well, like almost everything else, there is an app for that to keep your [40:23.400 --> 40:28.760] New Year's resolution strong. Programmers are offering smartphone applications to track eating, [40:28.760 --> 40:34.600] smoking, or other habits that you're trying to change. Reporter Karen Keifa explains. Out with [40:34.600 --> 40:43.400] old habits in with the new. I'm going to join the gym. And become more active. I'm going to try to [40:43.400 --> 40:48.840] drink more water because I drink too much diet soda. New Year's resolutions are easy to make and [40:48.840 --> 40:54.040] even easier to break. Have you guys ever had a resolution that you didn't quite stick with? Yes. [40:54.040 --> 40:58.840] What was that going to die? It was to stop biting my nails, but then never worked out. [40:58.840 --> 41:04.040] So what have you had a reminder in your pocket every day? That's the goal of smartphone apps [41:04.040 --> 41:10.600] like resolutions 2012, which lets users choose goals, identify habits they need to change to meet [41:10.600 --> 41:17.480] them and track progress. Weight loss is a popular resolution each year. The Daily Burn app for iPhone [41:17.480 --> 41:22.920] manages workouts and calorie counts. The new weight loss app for Android gives day by day [41:22.920 --> 41:28.360] tips on eating, working out and slimming down. The My Quick Coach app from Livestrong is for [41:28.360 --> 41:33.560] those who want to kick butts in 2012. The app presents daily guidelines for quitting smoking [41:33.560 --> 41:39.400] gradually over time or helping you go cold turkey. The quitter app for iPhone tallies how much [41:39.400 --> 41:44.840] money you've saved since putting down your last cigarette. And keeping a resolution can require [41:44.840 --> 41:50.760] a support system. I want to try to eat healthier. We've got to be a role model and show them more [41:50.760 --> 41:55.960] how to eat healthy. Try posting your goal on social media so connections can cheer you on. [41:57.240 --> 42:02.680] That was Karen Kafa reporting. Some visitors to the Sierra are putting away their skis and [42:02.680 --> 42:08.520] instead taking out their golf clubs. The National Weather Service says Tahoe had the 8th driest [42:08.520 --> 42:16.200] December since 1903. Just 3.72 inches of precipitation fell in the last three months of the year. [42:16.200 --> 42:22.440] Just 31% of average precipitation. In fact, the owner of the old Brockway Golf Club on Tahoe's [42:22.440 --> 42:29.000] normally snowy North Shore says that he's actually open right now for the first time ever in his 20 [42:29.000 --> 42:34.120] years of business. It is amazing what a difference a year makes. Absolutely. And we were we were [42:34.120 --> 42:38.680] up there last year and it was just snow everywhere. Yeah, absolutely. Well, is it going to change? [42:38.680 --> 42:43.240] That's the question. KTVU meteorologist Mark Tamayo joins us now to give us our forecast. Well, [42:43.240 --> 42:47.800] yeah, we have it locked in this dry weather pattern essentially for over a month now with a few [42:47.800 --> 42:52.600] week systems moving in and unfortunately no big changes showing up in the long range weather maps [42:52.600 --> 42:57.000] as we begin 2012. Here's a look at the highest from today. You can see look at these 70s. It [42:57.000 --> 43:03.000] is January 1st. Morgan Hill topped out at 74 degrees. I will say Santa Cruz also topped out in [43:03.000 --> 43:08.040] the lower 70s as well as 73. Some patchy fog lingered right around the Concord of Vallejo keeping [43:08.040 --> 43:13.160] those temperatures in the upper 50s, but still at least across most of the Bay Area temperatures [43:13.160 --> 43:17.720] on the mild side. This was a time lapse about an hour ago looking out toward the Oakland [43:17.720 --> 43:21.640] Estuary. A few high clouds have an increase and you can see all the boats coming in from an ice [43:21.640 --> 43:26.840] day on the bay to celebrate New Year's Day. As far as overnight lows starting out tomorrow morning, [43:26.840 --> 43:31.720] on the cool side, once again we're talking about some 30s showing up in Santa Rosa and Napa and [43:31.720 --> 43:37.480] also Concord. Oakland at 42 and San Jose right around 40. Patchy fog. Locally dense could return [43:37.480 --> 43:41.880] especially at toward the inland valleys right around the Delta as well and up in the North Bay [43:41.880 --> 43:47.080] for Santa Rosa. The bigger perspective in the Pacific, the satellite, there's actually a storm [43:47.080 --> 43:51.480] out here, but the unfortunate part of that news if you want the rain and the snow, it is heading [43:51.480 --> 43:56.040] way up to our north. So here's the system I am tracking for tomorrow. The associated cold front [43:56.040 --> 44:00.680] will be approaching Northern California. This will have an impact on our forecast for your Monday [44:00.680 --> 44:05.880] with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Most areas coming down about four to eight degrees from [44:05.880 --> 44:11.240] today's highs and there is just a tiny chance that much of a chance of a north-based sprinkle as we [44:11.240 --> 44:15.320] do head into it tomorrow afternoon, but it looks like the bulk of the shower activity will be up [44:15.320 --> 44:19.800] to our north and we're not expecting much. This is mainly a cloud producer and also bringing some [44:19.800 --> 44:24.120] cooler air. In fact, it shows up nicely with the updated forecast model. Tomorrow morning at nine [44:24.120 --> 44:28.760] o'clock, some cloud cover out there. You notice that rain band from Cape Menesino to the north and [44:28.760 --> 44:33.640] not drifting too much to the south by 12 o'clock. So quite a few clouds. That's why we do have partly [44:33.640 --> 44:39.160] two mostly cloudy skies in the Bay Area forecast for your Monday. Seven o'clock, definitely want to [44:39.160 --> 44:44.200] bundle up with temperatures in the upper 30s to the upper 40s. A sun cloud mix by 12 o'clock. Still [44:44.200 --> 44:49.480] quite a few clouds out there and then by three o'clock partly cloudy skies. Most areas on either [44:49.480 --> 44:53.800] side of 60 degrees for afternoon highs. So Santa Rosa no longer in the upper 60s. We're going to [44:53.800 --> 45:01.080] put you at 61 San Francisco 59 and San Jose tops out 63 degrees out of the 70s in Morgan Hill back [45:01.080 --> 45:05.720] down to 65. Here is a look ahead. Your extended forecast and you will notice this temperatures [45:05.720 --> 45:11.160] in fact warming up a little bit as we do head into Tuesday and then also into Wednesday. Partly [45:11.160 --> 45:15.880] cloudy skies on Thursday as these very weak systems move up to our north with your weekend always [45:15.880 --> 45:19.160] in view. If you're looking for more rain, you're not going to find it here just yet with those [45:19.160 --> 45:24.040] readings mainly in the lower 60s. Heather and Ken typically when we have a dry period we always [45:24.040 --> 45:29.720] have the other extreme about two weeks away but I can usually always advertise that in the forecast [45:29.720 --> 45:33.800] but nothing is showing up just yet. Nothing inside huh? Yeah and hopefully maybe things [45:33.800 --> 45:37.400] could change with the updated forecast charts coming in the next few hours. All right Mark, [45:37.400 --> 45:43.960] thanks. Thanks. Well Tom Cruz's latest mission is succeeding at the box office. Jump now? Yes, [45:43.960 --> 45:52.440] commit. Jump. Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol has now scaled more than $100 million in U.S. [45:52.440 --> 45:57.320] sales about 30 million from this final holiday weekend. The action-packed film is helping [45:57.320 --> 46:01.960] Hollywood finish a tough year on a high note. Mission was again followed by Sherlock Holmes, [46:01.960 --> 46:07.560] A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks, Chipwrecked. Steven Spielberg's new movie Warhorse [46:07.560 --> 46:14.120] started the fourth place and the violent thriller girl with the dragon tattoo is inked in at fifth [46:14.120 --> 46:19.800] place. Well it is a nail-biter Sunday as teams all around the NFL battle for final playoff spots [46:19.800 --> 46:24.360] and that includes the Raiders. We'll have complete highlights coming up next in Sports Wrap. [46:27.640 --> 46:32.200] Hi, I'm Chris from Airport Home Appliance. [48:49.960 --> 48:54.280] How's it going everybody? Happy New Year. I'm Mark Ibanez. Welcome to Sports Wrap. I think it was [48:54.280 --> 49:00.520] a little more entertaining than anybody who pulls for the 49ers wanted it to be. But the end result, [49:00.520 --> 49:05.880] it fits the wish list. Victory, a first round buy and no major injuries. I'll tell you what though, [49:05.880 --> 49:11.000] San Francisco, they can dish out punishment on defense. No doubt sending a few of the rams [49:11.000 --> 49:16.120] into their offices with some bumps and bruises. The always punishing Patrick Willis was back. [49:16.120 --> 49:22.200] Bad hamstring. He's healthy. Down early, 7-0. Niners tie it. Alex Smith got good blocks from [49:22.200 --> 49:28.040] Justin Peel and Frank Gore. He is in from 11 yards out. We got 7-7. Just a wee bit later. [49:28.040 --> 49:33.400] Smith will zip it to Michael Crabtree. Want to see why the rams are so bad? Yeah, they can't tackle. [49:33.400 --> 49:40.200] That's one thing. 28 yards. Touchdown 20-7. Niners at half. Third quarter. You will see a little [49:40.200 --> 49:45.880] trickery here. The fake field goal. David Akers lobbing to Michael Crabtree all by his lonesome [49:45.880 --> 49:51.000] 27-10. You gotta take a look at that. He's getting Crabtree a little sheepish there. Look at him. [49:51.000 --> 49:56.600] He's out there. Rams don't happen to notice that. And Akers, who said he didn't even get to warm his [49:56.600 --> 50:02.840] arm up, lobs it to him perfectly. 34-13 when Kellen Clemens of the Rams will loft one deep for the [50:02.840 --> 50:10.360] former 49er Brandon Lloyd. Touchdown 36 yards. They add another touchdown after an onside kick [50:10.360 --> 50:16.520] was successful. But Clemens in the late going sack by Navarro Bowman. Not pretty much put an end [50:16.520 --> 50:23.080] to the Rams. 34-27. The final. Jim Harren. Harbaugh and Company wrap one up. One of their best [50:23.080 --> 50:29.160] regular seasons ever to it. 13-3. And the first round by. And they'll finally play at the stick [50:29.160 --> 50:34.920] in two weeks. Meanwhile, with all due respect, if you saw the Raiders with everything on the line [50:34.920 --> 50:40.120] this afternoon, there for the taking simply put, they just didn't deserve to be in the playoffs. [50:40.120 --> 50:46.040] The Chargers will move the ball at will and eventually move the Raiders right on into vacation [50:46.040 --> 50:53.400] mode. Carson Palmer to Darius. Heyward Bay. That's a nice little fade play. 7-0 DHB by the way. [50:53.400 --> 50:58.120] Great game as you see the catch again. Nine grabs for him. 130 yards. The touchdown. [50:58.120 --> 51:05.720] San Diego answers back. Phillip Rivers to Antonio Gates. That was what it was. Just a porous defense [51:05.720 --> 51:11.880] by the Raiders all afternoon. 7-7. Now watch this on the kickoff a bit later. Richard Goodman [51:11.880 --> 51:20.040] comes out of the end zone and nobody will stop him. He's gone 105 yard return for the Chargers [51:20.040 --> 51:25.960] and they lead it 24-13 at half. Still the Raiders with a great shot at pulling this ball game out [51:25.960 --> 51:32.200] in the fourth quarter. Palmer who threw for 401 yards up top for the tight end. Kevin Boss. He's [51:32.200 --> 51:38.200] got it. Touchdown Raiders. They pulled it within 3126. Boss shaken up on the play had to be helped [51:38.200 --> 51:44.280] off as you see the replay there. He seemed to take a shot to the back of the neck. But after that [51:44.280 --> 51:52.280] the kickoff ensues. It's a key play again. Goodman will bobble the ball apparently on the goal line. [51:52.280 --> 51:57.000] The Raiders their fans. Everybody thinks that's a safety. They've got the momentum. The ball [51:57.000 --> 52:03.000] in two points. But the officials have to review correctly rule. It's a San Diego ball on the [52:03.000 --> 52:10.760] half yard line and dejectedly the Raiders just give it up 99 and a half yard drive. Rivers to [52:10.760 --> 52:17.800] Malcolm Floyd to finish it off and finish off the Raiders 38-26. Hugh Jackson is living. You'll hear [52:17.800 --> 52:22.680] from him tonight at 10 for the second straight year. Raiders finish 8-8. Needless to say this [52:22.680 --> 52:28.440] one stings a bit more than last year. They had the playoffs in their sights. So after all it's [52:28.440 --> 52:33.160] Tebow time in the playoffs. Although through the back door there's a mom. She had a son on both teams. [52:33.160 --> 52:38.600] Chiefs and Broncos only touched down to the game. Dexter McCluster from 21 yards out will [52:38.600 --> 52:47.000] scamper to the end zone. 7-3 Denver losing but still winning. The the Jets meanwhile [52:47.000 --> 52:53.480] had their very verbose coach shut up. They go home after blowing it against the Dolphins. [52:53.480 --> 53:00.120] Batmora tossed to Charles Clay 1 yard 1917 Miami. And by the way one of the great careers coming [53:00.120 --> 53:07.800] to an end. Jason Taylor retiring for the Dolphins after 15 years in the NFL 13 of them with Miami. [53:08.440 --> 53:16.120] Baltimore bruising it up with the Bengals a low scoring event. The Baltimore Ravens they make [53:16.120 --> 53:22.600] you pay for everything. And then Ray Rice on the loose 70 yards Ravens roll 24-16 to wrap up the [53:22.600 --> 53:30.040] number two seed in the AFC. Meanwhile the Packers and Lions who needs Aaron Rodgers. Did you hear [53:30.040 --> 53:35.800] about the Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn. He'll flip a little screen pass here to Ryan Grant. [53:35.800 --> 53:44.840] He'll do the rest 80 yards. And by the way Flynn six touchdown passes. That's a Packer record. [53:44.840 --> 53:51.800] Rodgers bred far. This kid's got the record 45-41. Packers lose only once in the regular season. [53:51.800 --> 53:57.160] The Saints are the three seed in the NFC. And they do look as though they're peaking right now. [53:57.160 --> 54:03.560] They're just rolling big time on offense. 17 all Carolina. Drew Brees flips for Marcus Colston. [54:03.560 --> 54:11.480] 42 yards. Brees on the beam again.
