[00:08.120 --> 00:11.960] Foreign Minister SM Krishna writes to the family of Anuj Bidwe who was killed in UK, [00:11.960 --> 00:16.360] assuring all help in bringing back the body, the government will bear the expenses. [00:16.360 --> 00:20.520] Anna Hazare may still be waiting for parliament to pass a strong anti-corruption law, but [00:20.520 --> 00:27.640] he has named a baby in his native village exactly that, Lokpal. [00:27.640 --> 00:30.520] Hello and welcome, I am Ketki Angre, our top story. [00:30.520 --> 00:34.600] The war of words that we saw in the Rajya Sabha till the early hours of Friday morning [00:34.600 --> 00:36.040] has not died out. [00:36.040 --> 00:40.960] Political leaders, whether it is the government or the opposition, members of team Anna, everyone [00:40.960 --> 00:45.760] continues to speak out their mind on the moves that resulted in the Lokpal bill not going [00:45.760 --> 00:48.760] through this parliament session. [00:48.760 --> 00:53.120] If that was freedom at midnight, this was literally fleedom at midnight. [00:53.120 --> 01:14.520] Here is a case where the assassins are blaming the victims, well orchestrated by opposition, [01:14.520 --> 01:32.160] joint opposition. [01:32.160 --> 01:37.440] Last night what we saw through the day was another 10 letter word and that was a caricature. [01:37.440 --> 01:45.920] If after 27th of December there has been a change of mind on that issue, as I said earlier, [01:45.920 --> 01:59.440] it's a matter that we need to sit and talk with the TMC. [01:59.440 --> 02:07.400] Members of team Anna should now consider changing their spectacles to change it from a unifocal [02:07.400 --> 02:17.240] anti-congress focus to at least a bifocal vision where at least some drawbacks or errors [02:17.240 --> 02:21.240] of the BJP also occasionally are visible to them. [02:21.240 --> 02:30.360] As a big political party, as a big political party, we will force the government to leave [02:30.360 --> 02:33.600] the seat of power and have a new election. [02:33.600 --> 02:48.440] And as the blame game continues over who's responsible [02:48.440 --> 02:55.800] for the midnight fiasco, NDTV's Rahul Srivastava has exclusive details on what led to the disruption. [02:55.800 --> 03:01.560] Perhaps the government till the end, till what we are hearing, till 11.45 in the night, [03:01.560 --> 03:06.200] did not tell the chairperson or the Rajasabha Secretariat whether it was interested in passing [03:06.200 --> 03:07.200] the bill. [03:07.200 --> 03:12.040] If we go back last year, Vishnu, if you remember, that there was a very clear indication after [03:12.040 --> 03:17.120] a nudge from Sonia Gandhi, the UPA chairperson, that the Congress wanted the women's reservation [03:17.120 --> 03:18.440] bill to be passed. [03:18.440 --> 03:22.480] And then the clear indication was sent to the Rajasabha secretariat and the Rajasabha [03:22.480 --> 03:23.480] chairman. [03:23.480 --> 03:27.360] And then what had happened, if you remember, that when members started protesting, tried [03:27.360 --> 03:32.120] to stall, marshals were called inside the house and they were, the people who were protesting [03:32.120 --> 03:33.240] were taken out. [03:33.240 --> 03:36.760] And then the bill was put to vote and the bill had sailed through the Rajasabha, though [03:36.760 --> 03:38.960] it is yet to come up in the Lok Sabha. [03:38.960 --> 03:42.840] Perhaps Vishnu, that clear indication was lacking and that is why the chair could not [03:42.840 --> 03:44.240] decide which way to go. [03:44.240 --> 03:48.080] The second crisis arose when what to do about the extension of the house because speakers [03:48.080 --> 03:51.960] were speaking till virtually as late as 11.15 in the night. [03:51.960 --> 03:59.000] The government went to the chairperson, chairman Rajasabha and told him at 11.42 that the government [03:59.000 --> 04:01.580] does not want an extension of the session. [04:01.580 --> 04:07.080] What it meant, that barely 15 minutes before the clock would take 12 or midnight, the chair [04:07.080 --> 04:09.360] did not really know which way to go. [04:09.360 --> 04:11.680] The bill does not really die. [04:11.680 --> 04:14.940] It remains alive for five months, 29 days. [04:14.940 --> 04:17.880] That means within six months, it can be taken up again. [04:17.880 --> 04:22.000] That's good news for the Lokpal bill, that perhaps that within six months, the debate [04:22.000 --> 04:25.760] can start all over where it had left off in the Rajasabha. [04:25.760 --> 04:30.000] The adjournments can be taken up, but there is a right of Vishnu, that perhaps given the [04:30.000 --> 04:35.620] fact that it's a contentious bill and the Lokpal and the budget session is a very crucial [04:35.620 --> 04:39.680] session for the government, perhaps the government's first indication which we have got is that [04:39.680 --> 04:41.560] budget first, Lokpal next. [04:41.560 --> 04:46.240] So that is why the second half could well be the time of the budget when the Lokpal [04:46.240 --> 04:48.680] bill can come up. [04:48.680 --> 04:52.800] In the air of the storm, the government says the Lokpal bill is not in cold storage, but [04:52.800 --> 04:59.440] as Sandeep Hukan explains, the budget session in March comes with its own complications. [04:59.440 --> 05:03.040] The UPA never had the numbers to push through the Lokpal bill in the Rajasabha. [05:03.040 --> 05:07.360] The picture was further complicated by the Trinamool Congress, who refused to support [05:07.360 --> 05:09.280] the government bill. [05:09.280 --> 05:14.360] But predictably for the government, the BJP became the main villain of the peace. [05:14.360 --> 05:19.660] So does all this effectively mean that the Lokpal bill has been put to sleep at the stroke [05:19.660 --> 05:21.320] of midnight? [05:21.320 --> 05:25.000] For the record, the government says it will try to revive the bill in the next session [05:25.000 --> 05:27.320] of parliament, in the budget session of parliament. [05:27.320 --> 05:32.320] But the key question is, will the government bring such a controversial bill that may end [05:32.320 --> 05:39.360] up the political class, especially at a time when it has to pass important economic legislations [05:39.360 --> 05:42.360] like the budget and the food security bill? [05:42.360 --> 05:44.920] That's the key question. [05:44.920 --> 05:49.360] In a decisive setback to the army chief, General VK Singh, the defence ministry has formally [05:49.360 --> 05:52.900] rejected his appeal, seeking to correct his date of birth. [05:52.900 --> 05:58.120] This means he will have to retire in May 2012, but he can now approach the courts. [05:58.120 --> 06:02.880] General Singh has also met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. [06:02.880 --> 06:06.520] My colleague Sudhir Ranjansen has the details. [06:06.520 --> 06:10.400] Defence ministry has officially today communicated to the chief of army staff that a statutory [06:10.400 --> 06:16.320] complaint in which he had said that his date of birth or the year of birth is 1951 and [06:16.320 --> 06:18.760] now 1950 cannot be accepted. [06:18.760 --> 06:23.920] The attorney general has said since he was made a chief of army staff with the consideration [06:23.920 --> 06:27.920] or with the calculation that he was born in 1950, it cannot be changed at this stage. [06:27.920 --> 06:31.880] This opinion had been conveyed to the ministry some time ago. [06:31.880 --> 06:33.460] Today it has been communicated. [06:33.460 --> 06:38.180] In the statutory complaint, the army chief had made it very clear that he is not fighting [06:38.180 --> 06:43.000] for tenure because if his age and which is there in his matriculation certificate as [06:43.000 --> 06:45.200] 1951, he gets another year. [06:45.200 --> 06:48.200] But in the statutory complaint, the chief has made it very, very clear that he's not [06:48.200 --> 06:53.460] fighting for tenure, but it is his personal honour that he is fighting for because he [06:53.460 --> 06:59.360] says or the army believes that if the chief of army staff's age is being doubted, what [06:59.360 --> 07:04.040] he has stated is being doubted, then you're doubting the chief's intention and the entire [07:04.040 --> 07:07.240] office of the chief of army staff is under a cloud. [07:07.240 --> 07:13.040] So it's basically a question of personal honour that the chief has been fighting for. [07:13.040 --> 07:17.680] After being targeted relentlessly over allegations of favouring a former client, the Home Ministry [07:17.680 --> 07:22.840] has asked all officers to show drafts of letters if the letter says that a decision has the [07:22.840 --> 07:25.400] approval or concurrence of the ministry. [07:25.400 --> 07:30.280] Shridambaram has said his ministry has issued a directive to all officers that when a draft [07:30.280 --> 07:34.560] is being prepared and finalised with a note that this issue has the approval of the Home [07:34.560 --> 07:42.800] Minister or Home Secretary, the draft must be put up to either of the two. [07:42.800 --> 07:49.200] At least 27 people were killed after cyclone Thane hit north coastal Tamil Nadu early on [07:49.200 --> 07:52.000] Friday leaving a trail of destruction. [07:52.000 --> 07:57.120] The cyclonic storm is weakening over land, but rains are expected to continue in the [07:57.120 --> 08:09.800] coastal districts of the state and also in southern Andhra Pradesh over the next 24 hours. [08:09.800 --> 08:14.560] They have a creek by cyclone Thane that crossed coastal Puducherry and Kattalur district of [08:14.560 --> 08:17.160] Tamil Nadu early on Friday. [08:17.160 --> 08:21.600] The wind speed was upwards of 120 kilometres per hour. [08:21.600 --> 08:28.680] As far as the next 24 hours is concerned, it is likely to rain at many places in Tamil [08:28.680 --> 08:29.680] Nadu and Puducherry. [08:29.680 --> 08:34.240] One or two places may experience very heavy rainfall. [08:34.240 --> 08:38.160] Early in the morning tomorrow is when Met Department officials say cyclone Thane will [08:38.160 --> 08:42.240] make landfall and that's in the coastal district of Kattalur anywhere between Puducherry and [08:42.240 --> 08:47.240] Kattalur and this rainfall is expected to last till afternoon or tomorrow evening. [08:47.240 --> 08:52.480] Of course, people have been asked to stay in shelters, government has taken precaution [08:52.480 --> 08:59.240] to move the people in the coastal districts off to safer places, heavy rainfall expected [08:59.240 --> 09:01.440] and also very high speed winds. [09:01.440 --> 09:07.840] Some 250 coastal villages inhabited by fishermen had been put on high alert and there was fear [09:07.840 --> 09:09.720] all night long. [09:09.720 --> 09:11.720] Several hundreds were evacuated. [09:11.720 --> 09:40.680] The full extent of [09:40.680 --> 09:44.840] the damage wreaked by cyclone Thane is still to be assessed. [09:44.840 --> 09:49.240] People say they have not seen such a cyclone in several years but the worry is going to [09:49.240 --> 09:54.200] be about the days ahead because many of these fisher folk along the coast have lost their [09:54.200 --> 09:57.520] livelihood because the catamarans and the boats have been destroyed. [09:57.520 --> 10:04.520] With Madhu Bharti in Puducherry, in Chennai with camera person Nagraju, Uma Sudhir, NDTV. [10:04.520 --> 10:08.440] The capital woke up to a white blanket of fog on Friday morning. [10:08.440 --> 10:11.760] As visibility dropped, disrupting rail and air traffic. [10:11.760 --> 10:15.620] As many as 75 flights were delayed and 40 trains cancelled. [10:15.620 --> 10:19.960] The med department has said the fog is likely to continue into the new year. [10:19.960 --> 10:26.360] A relatively warmer morning in Delhi but as the temperature went up to 6.8 degrees, dense [10:26.360 --> 10:30.520] fog closed in, affecting road, rail and air traffic. [10:30.520 --> 10:34.440] Visibility at the airport dropped to below 50 metres and many flights had to land using [10:34.440 --> 10:37.940] the Cat 3B landing system. [10:37.940 --> 10:59.280] On the whole, 75 flights were delayed, 15 cancelled and 7 flights diverted. [10:59.280 --> 11:01.440] At the railway station things were no different. [11:01.440 --> 11:06.440] Over 40 trains were cancelled and an equal number either running late or diverted, leaving [11:06.440 --> 11:08.040] many passengers stranded. [11:08.040 --> 11:12.520] We hear the announcements that, sorry about the inconvenience, but the trains are going [11:12.520 --> 11:13.520] to be delayed. [11:13.520 --> 11:15.200] The situation has got to do with the fog. [11:15.200 --> 11:19.840] We see the fog clearing but nonetheless a lot of the trains are still coming in late. [11:19.840 --> 11:20.840] There are passengers out here. [11:20.840 --> 11:30.360] But the worst affected was Uttar Pradesh. [11:30.360 --> 11:34.160] In Mathura, four people died in a road mishap due to fog. [11:34.160 --> 11:38.200] And in neighboring Shah Jahanpur, another road accident due to blinding fog claimed [11:38.200 --> 11:39.240] five lives. [11:39.240 --> 11:43.480] The Met Department has forecast fog over the next few days, affecting New Year plans of [11:43.480 --> 11:45.120] most commuters. [11:45.120 --> 11:50.400] With Hina Gambhir, Umi Khulsoom, NDTV. [11:50.400 --> 11:55.320] The Ministry of External Affairs has stepped in to assist the family members of Anuj Bidwe, [11:55.320 --> 12:00.080] an Indian student who was brutally shot dead in Manchester City in United Kingdom last [12:00.080 --> 12:01.080] week. [12:01.080 --> 12:05.720] A student in Birmingham is expediting the visa process for two members of Anuj's family [12:05.720 --> 12:09.320] and will also bear their travel expenses. [12:09.320 --> 12:16.240] A murdered son and now the torturous wait for his body. [12:16.240 --> 12:21.680] The family of 23-year-old Anuj Bidwe, a victim of hate crime in the United Kingdom, urging [12:21.680 --> 12:26.160] the government to exert diplomatic pressure on authorities in Manchester to release their [12:26.160 --> 12:28.600] son's body at the earliest. [12:28.600 --> 12:32.960] The Ministry of External Affairs has asked the Coroner's Court to expedite the process [12:32.960 --> 12:35.800] and has promised to bear all expenses. [12:35.800 --> 12:51.160] The Lancaster University has told the MEA that they will return Anuj's tuition fees. [12:51.160 --> 12:55.960] Meanwhile unlike their counterparts in Australia, where several Indians have been attacked, [12:55.960 --> 13:19.760] the British police was quick to treat the murder as a hate crime. [13:19.760 --> 13:25.600] For the family back in Pune, the wait getting that much harder to achieve closure. [13:25.600 --> 13:32.560] In the last two decades, the UK has seen race crime rates go down considerably, but it still [13:32.560 --> 13:35.800] continues to be a very real threat. [13:35.800 --> 13:40.720] And this is something that the Home Office will have to take into account when it starts [13:40.720 --> 13:44.080] to probe the murder of Anuj Bidwe. [13:44.080 --> 13:48.240] Of course, the police investigation which is currently on has admitted that it is a [13:48.240 --> 13:53.360] race crime, but is also according to sources saying that they are looking into whether [13:53.360 --> 13:57.480] it could be a gang initiation. [13:57.480 --> 14:26.400] Time for a break, news updates continue on the other side. [08:40.460 --> 15:00.080] ible prices. come to an end [16:05.360 --> 16:10.360] the sheer scale of destruction inside Sri Lanka's last no-fire zone is [16:10.360 --> 16:14.720] evident that the blood of innocence was spilt here [16:20.280 to have politicians at [17:27.080 --> 17:41.120] our mercy welcome back there was a lot more to this year than India lifting the [17:41.120 --> 17:45.560] cricket World Cup he has a look back at all the highs and lows of Indian sports [17:45.560 --> 18:02.360] in 2011 after the highs of 2010-2011 was a relatively quite a year for Indian [18:02.360 --> 18:04.800] sports [18:05.120 --> 18:09.940] Ronjan Sodhi let his gun do all the talking the trap shooter became the [18:09.940 --> 18:17.200] first Indian to successfully defend his World Cup title it was a different [18:17.200 --> 18:21.840] story altogether for Saina Nehwal she didn't win a single major tournament but [18:21.840 --> 18:25.880] reached the final of the year-ending World Super Series a good sign we'd say [18:25.880 --> 18:29.680] going into the year of the Olympics I'm confident that we'll get her back on [18:29.680 --> 18:32.840] track as quickly as possible [18:32.840 --> 18:37.880] Saina's fellow shuttlers Jwala Gupta and Ashwini Ponnapado had an impressive run [18:37.880 --> 18:42.640] their doubles bronze was India's first medal at the World Championships in 28 [18:42.640 --> 18:48.760] years stars failing to shine bright was the trend in boxing as well [18:48.760 --> 18:57.240] but new stars were born in the ring Vikas Krishan became just the second [18:57.240 --> 19:05.280] Indian boxer after Vijinder to win a World Championship medal [19:05.280 --> 19:10.120] the man most synonymous with Indian football bid farewell to the game and it [19:10.120 --> 19:17.520] will probably be impossible to fill Baichung Bhutia's shoes [19:17.520 --> 19:22.280] the year began in terrible style for the Indian football team being knocked out [19:22.280 --> 19:28.720] of the AFC Asian Cup that was followed by a musical chair of sorts of national [19:28.720 --> 19:37.520] coaches the end though was a happy one with sixth SAF championship title win at [19:37.520 --> 19:49.920] home who runs hockey in India never mind if you can't answer that one but will [19:49.920 --> 19:55.080] India qualify for the 2012 Olympics well we certainly hope so but to do that [19:55.080 --> 19:59.120] they'll have to do better than just one tournament win and one final appearance [19:59.120 --> 20:05.960] in a year here's someone who almost found the bulls-eye Deepika Kumari missed [20:05.960 --> 20:09.760] out on a World Cup goal by a whisker [20:10.840 --> 20:17.000] another Deepika Palikkal had a great year three whisper titles and a quarterfinal [20:17.000 --> 20:20.680] finish at the World Championships [20:20.680 --> 20:28.040] let's hope in the new year there are more hits and fewer misses as India aim [20:28.040 --> 20:35.520] to make London 2012 a memorable outing here's the weather update with number [20:35.520 --> 20:43.560] two hello and welcome dense fog conditions would occur over areas of [20:43.560 --> 20:48.100] Delhi Punjab Haryana and Uttar Pradesh during the next 24 hours minimum minus two and [20:55.880 --> 21:00.600] Srinagar at minus four degrees mainly dry with expected over the entire region [21:00.600 --> 21:04.560] in the eastern region plenty of sunshine likely over Bihar Jharkhand West Bengal [21:04.560 --> 21:08.960] and Orissa the minimum temperatures have increased over most areas here today the [21:08.960 --> 21:12.280] minimum temperature in Patna at nine cyclonic storm Thane is likely to weaken in the [21:21.600 --> 21:26.360] next 12 hours but very heavy rainfall expected over areas of coastal Andhra [21:26.360 --> 21:30.360] Pradesh coastal Tamil Nadu North Tamil Nadu and wet weather also likely over [21:30.360 --> 21:35.600] areas of South India Karnataka Ryal Seema and areas of Kerala and Lakshmi [21:35.600 --> 21:41.000] maximum temperature in Chennai at 25 degrees and Puducherry at 26 find the [21:41.000 --> 21:44.280] Western Central India the minimum temperatures could rise by two to four [21:44.280 --> 21:47.680] degrees over central India during the next couple of days mainly dry with [21:47.680 --> 21:52.520] expected over Gujarat and the west coast Mumbai nice and pleasant at 31 degrees [21:52.520 --> 21:57.080] and Panjim slightly warmer at 34 degrees today well that's it on the weather [21:57.080 --> 21:59.360] report [22:02.600 --> 22:07.520] Ahmedabad is the most polluted city in the country the SPM level at 399 [22:07.520 --> 22:12.000] microamps per cubic meter it has displaced Delhi since yesterday Kolkata [22:12.000 --> 22:16.200] at the second spot and Chandigarh yet again the least polluted city in the [22:16.200 --> 22:20.880] country well that's it on the air pollution report that's all we have but [22:20.880 --> 22:24.880] we would like to end on a lighter note with our puppets who've decided to turn [22:24.880 --> 22:29.320] the biggest talking point this year into the year's most hummed and Google [22:29.320 --> 22:58.560] song when they matter um why is look by look by very very weak why is look by [22:58.560 --> 23:11.440] look by very very weak government full of goon goon wearing khadi white for a [23:11.440 --> 23:22.960] public all is night public future black why is look by look by very very weak [23:22.960 --> 23:37.640] Rahul come on me ready mama mia on the English ah and the Congress holding [23:37.640 --> 23:43.720] lockpile I'm not full of fear empty rally [23:43.720 --> 23:55.120] people come on the rivers again power power so much power I show to you power [23:55.120 --> 24:07.520] shower shower okay child you better eat now oh god I am dying now she's happy [24:07.520 --> 24:18.520] how this song is for faster boys you don't have choice why is look by look [24:18.520 --> 24:45.800] by very very weak tell me why is look by look by very very weak one two three [24:45.800 --> 24:49.040] one day [26:15.920 --> 26:20.760] 2011 as the winners and losers which could be big big winners in 2012 [26:20.760 --> 26:27.320] Sarvendra's top best for 2012 are heavyweights like BHEL RIL HUL and HDFC [26:27.320 --> 26:33.960] why here's a reasoning as given by Sarvendra time to decipher what has [26:33.960 --> 26:40.000] happened in 2011 and what can be best made out of 2012 here are some of us [26:40.000 --> 26:45.400] talks that we think that would do well in 2012 the whole basis of the [26:45.400 --> 26:49.960] force talks that we are about to discuss is the fact that our long-term view [26:49.960 --> 26:54.440] that nifty should base out somewhere around the 46 4700 levels still remains [26:54.440 --> 26:58.880] intact so till proven otherwise the medium term and the short term trend [26:58.880 --> 27:04.320] both are in just around the long term supports so first talk that comes to my [27:04.320 --> 27:10.320] mind is bail that is one stock that has completed a yearly setup minor targets [27:10.320 --> 27:14.560] on the downside say around 192 100 could be left we would initiate longs on this [27:14.560 --> 27:19.520] one around 190 200 aggressive traders can start accumulating from current [27:19.520 --> 27:24.000] levels itself stops can be placed around 174 once those targets are complete on [27:24.000 --> 27:27.760] the downside this talk could easily give you anywhere between 25 to 30 percent [27:27.760 --> 27:33.560] return in 2012 the next talk that comes to our name is reliance reliance has got [27:33.560 --> 27:39.200] good supports around 680 700 has been trading a 300 point parallel range over [27:39.200 --> 27:43.440] the last two years we had broken below 900 over the last couple of months but [27:43.440 --> 27:48.680] now setups look encouraging the stock should pull back towards 900 in days to [27:48.680 --> 27:52.920] come 664 remains a very very crucial support and stop loss for this view [27:52.920 --> 27:57.160] because below 654 the stock can actually weaken and probably that was the time to [27:57.160 --> 28:00.880] relook at the nifty itself but going with the flow as of now this talk would [28:00.880 --> 28:06.920] easily give you 900 plus going into the first two quarters of 2012 the other [28:06.920 --> 28:11.400] name that comes to our mind is HUL been a very very strong out performer the key [28:11.400 --> 28:16.520] point in 2011 for the stock was that it took out the high of 2000 so after 10 of [28:16.520 --> 28:20.840] the year 2000 so after 10 long years we have had a breakout out of 325 the [28:20.840 --> 28:26.560] breakout has been solid with volumes so now any pullback towards 350 370 should [28:26.560 --> 28:31.360] be a good place to accumulate this stock for 2012 stops can be placed below 319 [28:31.360 --> 28:36.240] and this is a stock that could keep on running through 12 13 and could give you [28:36.240 --> 28:40.480] returns of upward the prices upwards of 500 plus on this talk are definitely [28:40.480 --> 28:45.360] visible now next talk in mind is HDFC Bank again our performer [28:45.360 --> 28:49.360] consolidating up with the 2008 highs a small little bullish flag which is right [28:49.360 --> 28:53.360] now setting up for the last couple of months [28:53.360 --> 29:02.400] you [29:02.400 --> 29:09.440] ndt and you're watching ndtv 24-7 [29:09.440 --> 29:27.560] hello and welcome to this year-end special on the single biggest event of [29:27.560 --> 29:34.320] 2011 if there's one thing that this year will be remembered for it's for the hope [29:34.320 --> 29:40.080] and it's still only a hope that in 2011 the fight against corruption in our [29:40.080 --> 29:44.840] country has finally begun in earnest and this fight against corruption became [29:44.840 --> 29:51.840] symbolic with one man the 74 year old Anna and for the government the year [29:51.840 --> 29:58.080] became to coin a phrase Anna horribles as the government bungled and botched [29:58.080 --> 30:05.080] and then buckled under pressure from
