British writer and historian Richard [00:13.280 --> 00:18.720] Gott analyzed Merkel-Sour state members Brazil Argentina year-wide and far-wide recent [00:18.720 --> 00:22.720] decision to close their ports to all Malvina's flagships. [00:22.720 --> 00:27.520] The UK is as leap while South America is growing in a strength and increasingly united, [00:27.520 --> 00:31.440] what has changed in recent years is the political climate in Latin America. [00:31.440 --> 00:36.080] New governments have appeared across the continent with a progressive and nationalist agenda. [00:36.080 --> 00:41.120] They do not always see eye to eye with each other. Their views on economic policy may differ, [00:41.120 --> 00:46.400] but they are united in believing their continent should organize itself for the benefit of its own [00:46.400 --> 00:51.200] peoples without outside interference. Mr. Gott wrote in this column. [00:51.200 --> 00:55.840] Former Argentina ambassador to the UN and Media Cardinals considers Brazil year-wide [00:55.840 --> 01:01.040] until a Merkel-Sour associate member will play a strategic role in the sovereign to these [01:01.040 --> 01:07.840] views. The big countries to watch are Brazil, Uruguay and Chile. If those three countries [01:08.480 --> 01:15.760] take a tough position and do not accept being subject to pressure by the Brits, [01:16.480 --> 01:19.760] then they will have to come to the table on bargain and good faith. [01:19.760 --> 01:25.280] It is, in today's work, kind of unacceptable to say I have nothing to talk to you. [01:27.360 --> 01:31.760] First because it isn't true, you have a lot to talk to me, I have a sovereignty claim, I was there [01:32.480 --> 01:36.320] at some point and I was evicted and then you showed up. [01:36.320 --> 01:40.240] Within a new regional scenario, Bridges' natural resources exploitation [01:40.240 --> 01:45.280] purposes in the South Atlantic which have refilled tensions between both countries could also be [01:45.280 --> 01:50.480] affected. If oil is found in commercial quantities, Bridges' foreign office will be obliged [01:50.480 --> 01:56.000] to awake from its long, self-imposed slumber which have got pointed out in his report. [01:56.000 --> 02:05.520] And one has to think about the future. Can you exploit those discoveries without any kind of [02:05.520 --> 02:13.440] coastal support? If the region tells the islanders, can't do that because basically what you're [02:13.440 --> 02:20.400] drilling for are Argentine resources, which are part of the sovereignty dispute, and therefore [02:20.400 --> 02:28.000] we will not deal with the vessels that you will need to go forward with the hydrocarbon exploitation. [02:28.000 --> 02:32.560] Common sense according to the Guardians' articles should take Argentina and the UK to the [02:32.560 --> 02:38.400] negotiating table as Argentine President Christina Fernández has constantly requested following [02:38.400 --> 02:53.040] UN's resolutions over the Malvinas Diplomatic Roe. Constance Aheller, Presti V, Buenos Aires. [02:54.080 --> 02:58.000] Three years of past since Israel waged and all of war against the Gaza Strip. [02:58.720 --> 03:05.760] Home to 1.5 million Palestinians, the tiny coastal enclave was bombarded by 100 Israeli war planes. [03:05.760 --> 03:11.760] During the three-week onslaught nearly 1,400 Gaza's were killed at thousands more injured. [03:12.480 --> 03:18.160] Israel forces used white phosphorous shells and other internationally bad weapons during the war. [03:18.960 --> 03:23.600] During a press conference, Hamas movement accused Israel of committing genocide against [03:23.600 --> 03:31.280] the Palestinians. Hamas considers Israeli war crimes in Gaza as another form of Israeli [03:31.280 --> 03:36.720] genocide against the Palestinian people. Israel has committed genocide against the Palestinians since [03:36.720 --> 03:42.160] the occupation of Palestine in 1948. Hamas calls on the international community and the free [03:42.160 --> 03:48.000] people of the world to recognize Israeli occupation as the most dangerous form of tourism in the world. [03:48.000 --> 03:52.880] Paramedics and firefighters from the Gaza civil defense commemorated the third [03:52.880 --> 03:59.120] anniversary of the war by driving their vehicles. Down Gaza's main street had exactly 11 AM, [03:59.120 --> 04:04.000] which marked the beginning of the war, which Israel called Operation Castled. [04:04.800 --> 04:08.960] Israel claimed it launched the war to stop the rocket fire from Gaza, [04:08.960 --> 04:14.640] telephoto-fishable Palestinian, muttedian. International laws and norms were violated by [04:14.640 --> 04:20.640] Israel during the war. Israel forces targeted ambulances and fight tracks and kill doctors and [04:20.640 --> 04:26.240] paramedics. They also targeted hospitals and clinics everywhere in Gaza during the course of war. [04:26.240 --> 04:31.360] Israel was able to get away with its crimes because of the international silence, [04:31.360 --> 04:34.640] but we will continue to demand justice for our victims. [04:35.440 --> 04:41.280] The offensive destroyed thousands of houses and devastated a large part of infrastructures [04:41.280 --> 04:47.920] in the blockaded strip, including U.R. Run's schools and centers. Civil society organizations [04:47.920 --> 04:52.960] have called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its crimes against the [04:52.960 --> 04:59.840] Gaza and the third anniversary. We are calling on the international community in order to continue efforts [05:00.640 --> 05:07.920] to get the Israel war criminals accountable on their crimes towards the Palestinian civilians [05:07.920 --> 05:13.760] on the same time to pressure Israel to end the illegal siege to stop all kinds of [05:13.760 --> 05:18.880] regulations on the Palestinian people. In recent weeks, Israel has been making threats against the [05:18.880 --> 05:24.400] Gaza Strip, while Gaza's haven't fully recovered from the last war. On the third [05:24.400 --> 05:29.120] anniversary of Israel's war on Gaza, Palestinians in the Taniqosal Ancliffs say [05:29.120 --> 05:33.200] Israeli leaders must be held accountable for what they did to innocent civilians. [05:33.200 --> 05:52.480] Ashraf Shana, President of Gaza. The chilly wind of recession has already started to blow [05:52.480 --> 05:57.760] on Italy. This Christmas was the worst of the last 10 years in terms of revenue, [05:57.760 --> 06:04.160] the consumer association codecans has warned. Consumption is heavily dropping. Italian spent [06:04.160 --> 06:10.080] 400 million euros less than expected on the days leading to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, [06:10.080 --> 06:16.320] meaning that each citizen spent about 50 euros less compared to the same period last year. [06:16.320 --> 06:24.880] Unfortunately, as predicted by all major consumer associations, two Italians out of three [06:24.880 --> 06:30.560] are spending much less compared to last year and all sectors, whole sailors and retailers [06:30.560 --> 06:36.320] have been heavily affected. Things will seemingly not improve in the coming days as winter [06:36.320 --> 06:43.360] sale expenditure are expected to drop by 30-40 percent compared to December 2010, according to [06:43.360 --> 06:49.840] codecans. The Italian burrows statistics has announced that the consumer confidence index failed [06:49.840 --> 06:56.160] significantly in November, while the country's economy has shrunk by 0.2 percent in the three [06:56.160 --> 07:02.640] months prior to October. The first contraction since 2009. According to most shopkeepers, [07:02.640 --> 07:09.440] pressure on Italians is really high. Taxes are heavy and wages too low compared to the cost of living. [07:09.440 --> 07:17.520] It goes without saying that the economy crisis and the recent emergency measures passed [07:17.520 --> 07:22.720] by the Parliament have made people decide to spend much less to be more cautious. [07:22.720 --> 07:30.480] I think most Italians fear hard times ahead, fear the challenges introduced by the government, [07:30.480 --> 07:34.560] the new taxes, people have not adjusted to the new fiscal regime yet. [07:34.560 --> 07:40.200] Italian seemed to be very worried about having to deal with the new tax [07:40.200 --> 07:45.200] tax contained in the anti-crisis package recently passed by the Parliament. [07:45.200 --> 07:50.480] The announcing increases in new taxes on petrol, the higher value added tax, [07:50.480 --> 07:54.560] as well as the introduction of the real estate tax on the first house, [07:54.560 --> 07:57.600] we likely have a huge impact on their lives. [07:57.600 --> 08:05.760] And fortunately, the three austerity plans that have been implemented since August this year [08:05.760 --> 08:11.040] have made things really confused things. Italians are extremely disoriented and disappointed. [08:11.040 --> 08:15.920] We need the government to seriously start focusing on the country's economic growth. [08:15.920 --> 08:20.400] Italian Prime Minister Mariamonti has announced that phase two of his emergency [08:20.400 --> 08:25.200] government action would be all about growth. Monti is determined to take on [08:25.200 --> 08:30.720] best interest and love-based by opening up the Italian economy to more competition, [08:30.720 --> 08:36.880] whether he manages to do so while retaining the political party support remains to be seen. [08:36.880 --> 08:39.760] Max Chiveli, Presti V, Rome. [08:47.760 --> 08:52.160] The youth revolution of Yemen held a press conference in San Osloberation Square [08:52.160 --> 08:57.200] about the events which took place in the March of Life Demonstration and resulted in the death [08:57.200 --> 09:02.320] of 13 protestors. The conference also called for the arrest of the U.S. Ambassador Gerald [09:02.320 --> 09:07.440] Verstine, who was set to play a key role in the killing of the March of Life protestors. [09:09.120 --> 09:13.200] Speakers during the press conference called for the U.S. Ambassador to be held accountable [09:13.200 --> 09:16.480] for being behind the killing of peaceful protestors. [09:16.480 --> 09:23.600] We call on the so-called Prime Minister to arrest Ambassador because he is one of the [09:23.600 --> 09:28.000] first people to give the green light for the killing of innocent protesters. [09:28.560 --> 09:34.960] The presser in San Osloberation started from the city of Tez, [09:34.960 --> 09:40.640] with the intention to cause for their chaos and to trigger a violent reaction from regime forces. [09:40.640 --> 09:48.160] His remarks sparked nationwide outrage as youth protestors have taken to the streets [09:48.160 --> 09:53.120] calling on the Ambassador to immediately leave the country or to face prosecution. [09:55.440 --> 10:02.000] We are very surprised at the U.S. Ambassador's latest remarks because he represents a country [10:02.000 --> 10:07.920] which is supposedly the world leader of democracy, free speech and equality. [10:07.920 --> 10:14.720] So, how can he accuse this peaceful demonstration of having bad intention and being equipped with [10:14.720 --> 10:20.720] armed weapons? I was part of the demonstration and it was not equipped with weapons. [10:22.480 --> 10:26.160] U.S. intervention has been strongly condemned throughout the Yemeni uprising, [10:26.160 --> 10:30.480] as many Yemenis accuse Washington of having its own agenda and their crushing these [10:30.480 --> 10:39.440] logical weakening, which they say will one day rid Yemen and the rest of the Muslim world, from foreign intervention. [10:39.440 --> 10:43.360] The youth revolution includes today's conference by reassuring that their peaceful demonstrations [10:43.360 --> 10:48.400] will continue despite the government's continuous attacks and despite the U.S. ambassadors, [10:48.400 --> 10:53.600] later remarks, they also say their revolution started up peacefully and will remain peacefully. [10:53.600 --> 11:00.080] U. S. E. millied press TV Sonina, [11:53.600 --> 12:08.440] help to get the regulated locationsandro and Berrain Miron [12:08.440 --> 12:11.640] in Germany. [12:14.640 --> 12:17.720] Thank you very much, [12:17.720 --> 12:19.840] Ganesing Miron is my sonmez, [12:19.840 --> 12:23.000] and he is my colleague from Miron. [12:23.000 --> 12:33.320] The leader of the Royalty's Law of Revolution says the popular movements and revolutions [12:33.320 --> 12:36.360] in the Arab world are anti-US. [12:36.360 --> 12:46.040] And the senior Israeli military official says Tel Aviv must start another war against the Gaza [12:46.040 --> 12:46.840] strip. [12:46.840 --> 13:07.480] Hello, welcome, it's good to have you company in 730 P.M. and Iran's capital to [13:07.480 --> 13:10.200] have one of the suppressive international news. [13:10.200 --> 13:14.840] Well, it's story, the commander of Iran's navy has said the country can easily close [13:14.840 --> 13:22.440] the strategic straight of hormones, if necessary. [13:22.440 --> 13:31.400] Closing the straight of hormones for the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran [13:31.400 --> 13:32.840] is very easy. [13:32.840 --> 13:40.840] It's a capability that has been built initially into our naval forces' abilities. [13:40.840 --> 13:49.480] Today, we're not in the home of straight, we are in the Sea of Oman and we don't need to close [13:49.480 --> 13:51.480] the home of straight. [13:51.480 --> 13:56.520] We can look and just deal with the Sea of Oman today. [13:56.520 --> 14:01.480] Therefore, we can control it from right here. [14:01.480 --> 14:05.160] Early Iran's vice president Muhammad Risada, he warned that not a drop of oil would [14:05.160 --> 14:09.880] be allowed to pass through the straight of hormones if sanctions are imposed on Iran's oil. [14:09.880 --> 14:13.560] The comments by the navy commander and vice president of the com is Iranian naval forces [14:13.560 --> 14:18.360] are midway through their 10 days of exercises in the straight of hormones and beyond. [14:18.360 --> 14:23.080] Among the objectives of the Velaiat 90 drills is to expand the presence of Iranian armed forces [14:23.080 --> 14:28.920] in international waters and to prepare against piracy terrorism or induce disruption to regional trade. [14:32.520 --> 14:36.120] The leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution says the operations and revolutions in the Middle East [14:36.120 --> 14:41.080] and North Africa are anti-American. I will tell you that the Ahmadiyya argues current [14:41.080 --> 14:45.480] our revolutions differ from those in the past and that they have been opposed by the U.S. [14:45.480 --> 14:48.360] and that people maintain an act of presence. [14:48.360 --> 14:51.320] The leader also criticized the U.S. for adopting contradictory [14:51.320 --> 14:53.560] stances towards regional countries. [14:53.560 --> 14:58.040] The Ahmadiyya said any democratic and patriotic leader to be elected in these countries [14:58.040 --> 15:00.440] will oppose the U.S. and Zionists. [15:00.440 --> 15:05.000] U.S. leader also said the victory of Islamic parties and elections in these countries proves [15:05.000 --> 15:09.880] that the Islamic nature of these revolutions, however, that does not mean they all demand [15:09.880 --> 15:12.200] and Islamic governments like that in Iran. [15:15.800 --> 15:20.120] On to Yemen where civilian has been shot dead in clashes between forces loyal to outgoing [15:20.120 --> 15:23.560] really Aliya Pilassale and opposition fighters in the capital Sennab. [15:24.120 --> 15:28.200] What is to say the clash broke out after Republican guard troops tried to remove barriers [15:28.200 --> 15:32.840] near the interior ministry to try to bring normalcy to the capital following the unrest. [15:32.840 --> 15:35.400] Three have been entered in the gun battle. [15:35.400 --> 15:39.000] In the meantime, hundreds of government employees of Raleed and Sanna, [15:39.000 --> 15:41.000] they are demanding reforms. [15:41.000 --> 15:44.360] They also want what they call corrupt managers to be expelled. [15:44.360 --> 15:47.640] Raleed is also continued demanding solid descent trial. [15:47.640 --> 15:52.040] People hold him responsible for the death of many innocent people in recent months. [15:52.040 --> 15:57.080] Yemen has been the scene of demonstrations since February, demanding regime change. [15:57.080 --> 16:04.760] U.S. supporters of the power transfer deal in Yemen have attacked anti-aging protesters [16:04.760 --> 16:10.120] in change square in the capital Sanna as a result 35 people have been injured. [16:10.120 --> 16:14.760] Sources close to Houthi movement say about 2,000 members of the Al-Islam Party attack [16:14.760 --> 16:19.960] their camps were sitting continues demanding outgoing ruler Aliya Pilassale to be brought to justice. [16:20.760 --> 16:25.480] The stone and stick wielding attackers also dismantled tents, one of which served as a field [16:25.480 --> 16:31.080] hospital. Al-Islam Party supports the power transfer deal broken by Saudi Arabia last month. [16:31.080 --> 16:35.720] Under the deal, solid will quit power in February 2012 without being prosecuted. [16:35.720 --> 16:52.600] Behind many of the armed forces of attack anti-government protesters in several villages across the country. [17:05.800 --> 17:13.640] Anti-government rallies were held in Citra, Dair and Ma'am here. [17:13.640 --> 17:17.480] Several protesters were arrested after they were attacked by the Saudi backed police. [17:17.480 --> 17:22.520] Protesters were chanting slogans against the ruling Al-Fali for regime calling for its downfall. [17:22.520 --> 17:26.120] And Tuesday workers who had been sacrificed for taking part in anti-aging protests [17:26.120 --> 17:29.080] marched outside the inter-medistry in the capital Manama. [17:29.080 --> 17:31.880] The urge to regime to immediately reinstate them. [17:31.880 --> 17:35.720] Many more people, including teachers and doctors, have lost their jobs as part of the [17:35.720 --> 17:37.720] crackdown on pro-democracy protests. [17:41.480 --> 17:45.640] The crackdown on anti-aging protests continues in Saudi Arabia. [17:45.640 --> 17:49.400] Saudi security forces shot and wounded four protesters in the eastern province. [17:49.960 --> 17:52.920] One of the wounded, a young boy, is in critical condition. [17:53.480 --> 17:57.720] The protesters took to the streets after the Saudi security forces raided homes in Awamia [17:57.720 --> 18:03.160] district. The eastern province is a focal point for anti-aging protests in Saudi Arabia. [18:03.160 --> 18:08.120] The demonstrations come as Riyadh has harshly enforced the ban on all anti-government gatherings [18:08.120 --> 18:12.840] across the kingdom. International rights groups have frequently condemned the Saudi regime for what [18:12.840 --> 18:15.240] they call gross violations of human rights. [18:18.600 --> 18:23.960] Seren authorities have released 755 prisoners who were involved in unrest in the country. [18:23.960 --> 18:28.520] The state media says the freed inmates were not involved in bloody incidents. Last month, [18:28.520 --> 18:32.200] Damascus released over 1,000 prisoners citing similar conditions. [18:32.760 --> 18:35.800] The latest release comes as out of league observers are planning to visit [18:35.800 --> 18:40.360] Dada Hama in Idlib as part of their mission to investigate months of deadly violence. [18:41.080 --> 18:46.040] Realising prisoners was one of the key conditions of the league's roadmap approved by Syria. [18:46.040 --> 18:48.920] The observers have confirmed Damascus's cooperation with the team. [18:49.560 --> 18:53.320] In the meantime, armed gangs have killed four more Syrian troops and wounded at least the [18:53.320 --> 18:58.120] dozen in an ambush in Dada earlier. In the day, troops also clash with armed groups [18:58.120 --> 19:01.560] and suspected arms as smugglers along the northern border with Turkey. [19:04.840 --> 19:08.600] Presbyterian correspondent in Damascus Muhammad Ali tells us more about the Arab leagues [19:08.600 --> 19:11.160] mission to assess violence hit areas in the country. [19:13.400 --> 19:18.520] We have seen in the images that the satellite TV channels are showing us that the [19:18.520 --> 19:24.520] Arab observers were freely moving in the streets. They were freely moving and talking to the [19:24.520 --> 19:30.520] people. They are asking them about the situation. How it was for the last several months in the city. [19:30.520 --> 19:37.080] We also saw that the residents of Homes were talking to them and telling them that in some cases [19:37.080 --> 19:42.360] with that, if it wasn't for the Syrian Arab army, the situation might have been even worse. [19:42.360 --> 19:49.320] Now, they have seen the destruction of some shops. The destruction of course, they were burned. [19:49.320 --> 19:57.000] Also in the buildings, the results of armed terrorist gangs, gunshots and also some results [19:57.000 --> 20:01.960] of heavy weapons such as RPG missiles. We know that the observers are still in Homes today. [20:01.960 --> 20:07.720] They also visited a number of other areas and neighborhoods in Homes. We know that also they [20:07.720 --> 20:14.280] will be visiting other cities that are swayed up, it live and even the Damascus countryside [20:15.320 --> 20:17.560] in the coming two or three days also. [20:20.520 --> 20:24.440] Another headline is, Israel is threatening to attack Gaza once again. [20:25.000 --> 20:30.040] Israeli general Benigans says attacking the coastal strip is not a matter of choice, [20:30.040 --> 20:35.080] but a war of necessity for Tel Aviv. The general says the war must be initiated by Israel [20:35.080 --> 20:40.040] and has to be quote swift and painful. Gans added that Tel Aviv is looking for the right time [20:40.040 --> 20:44.920] to launch a military offensive against the Gaza Strip. The general views the upcoming war as a [20:44.920 --> 20:50.360] way to deter Hamas, noting that Tel Aviv is losing a script by the coastal strip. Israel forces [20:50.360 --> 20:55.720] have launched several air and ground attacks on Gaza in recent years, killing many civilians [20:55.720 --> 21:04.280] and injuring scores more. Earlier, we were joined by Hader Aida, an associate professor in Gaza's [21:04.280 --> 21:10.040] Al-Aqsa University. Well, he believes revolutions in Arab countries will force Israel to think twice [21:10.040 --> 21:16.520] about launching a new war on the Gaza Strip. What is happening right now is that Israel [21:16.520 --> 21:21.960] wants to exercise a kind of psychological warfare against the Palestinians of Gaza in particular, [21:21.960 --> 21:27.160] and against the Palestinians in general, because the context within which these statements are [21:27.160 --> 21:33.720] taking place is very important. We need to remember that one year ago, the regime of Hoste [21:33.720 --> 21:39.960] Nimobarak, which was considered a strategic asset for Israel, actually was toppled. And Israel needs [21:39.960 --> 21:46.760] to test the water of the new Egyptian regime, but it also needs to test the water of the other [21:46.760 --> 21:54.600] Arab regimes, including the new Libya regime, the Yemenis and the Tunisian. We need to remember [21:54.600 --> 22:00.840] that the Arab people have actually been fighting for human rights and democracy. Human rights [22:00.840 --> 22:06.920] and democracy are the essence of the Palestinians, because democracy is also the anti-thesis of [22:06.920 --> 22:15.000] Zionism. Judging by what happened to the apartheid system in 1994, when most South Africans went to [22:15.000 --> 22:21.560] the polling stations and exercised their democratic right and voted for Nelson Mandela as the first [22:21.560 --> 22:28.760] black president of South Africa, that ultimately meant the end of the apartheid system in South Africa. [22:28.760 --> 22:34.600] The same thing might happen here in the Arab world, where democracy will ultimately lead to the [22:34.600 --> 22:41.800] end of the Zionist enterprise in Palestine. And that is why Israel feels very, very serious about [22:41.800 --> 22:46.440] the loss of the strategic asset in Egypt that is to say the Mubarak regime. [22:47.640 --> 22:52.520] The statements by Hader are there. Well, another news related to Israel Israel has approved the [22:52.520 --> 22:58.680] construction of 130 new settlements units in East Jerusalem outlots. The new units are scheduled [22:58.680 --> 23:03.560] to be built in Google settlements, just a few kilometers north of Bethlehem. Israel has been [23:03.560 --> 23:08.440] expanding settlements activities over the past months, despite international criticism. [23:08.440 --> 23:13.320] The move has been a major stumbling block to direct negotiations between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian [23:13.320 --> 23:18.520] Authority. The United Nations views the settlement construction in occupied Palestinian territory [23:18.520 --> 23:31.560] as illegal. The Egyptian opposition leader Mohammed Al-Bada, says the US is in talks with [23:31.560 --> 23:36.200] Egypt's military council to try and preserve the Egypt's Israel peace treaty. [23:36.200 --> 23:40.280] Al-Bada, says secret negotiations between the US representatives and the ruling military [23:40.280 --> 23:45.800] counsel are aimed at ensuring the new government will maintain the 1979 peace treaty. [23:45.800 --> 23:50.120] This is while some political parties, including the Muslim brotherhood's freedom and justice party, [23:50.120 --> 23:52.440] have questioned the fate of the peace treaty. [23:52.440 --> 23:56.520] Calls for an end to the Cairo Tel Aviv treaty have grown since the fall of Egypt's former president [23:56.520 --> 24:01.720] toasting Mubarak earlier this year. Most Egyptians have demanded an end to all ties with Tel Aviv [24:01.720 --> 24:03.880] and wants an end to the treaty. [24:08.440 --> 24:12.920] And in other headlines, Egypt's Al-Salito Hostimabarak has returned to court for the resumption of his [24:12.920 --> 24:17.880] trial after a three-month break. Mubarak is due sons, former inter-minister Hadid Aleppo, [24:17.880 --> 24:21.880] and six of his eighths took the stand, again at the Polizia Academy. [24:21.880 --> 24:25.880] Mubarak is charged with corruption, and killing hundreds of protesters in the crackdown against [24:25.880 --> 24:29.640] the massive uprising which ended with his rule on February 11. [24:34.920 --> 24:39.080] Question Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says he is ready for dialogue with the opposition. [24:39.080 --> 24:43.160] Putin says the opposition has failed to reach a common set of demands. [24:43.160 --> 24:47.800] This comes up to tens of thousands rallys in Moscow and St. Petersburg to protest against [24:47.800 --> 24:49.880] parliamentary election results on Saturday. [24:54.360 --> 24:58.600] Anti-corporate protesters in the United States say they will expand the rallies [24:58.600 --> 25:02.680] as Republican presidential hopefuls step up their election campaigns. [25:02.680 --> 25:13.400] protesters have pledged to interrupt candidate's events and camp out at their Iowa campaign offices. [25:14.280 --> 25:18.600] Thousands of Israelis have demonstrated against ultra-orthodox violence and gender [25:18.600 --> 25:23.720] segregation. Demonstrators protest exclusion of women, as well as violence against girls and [25:23.720 --> 25:29.000] women, by heart-ready extremists in the ton of bait shenash. This comes one day after several [25:29.000 --> 25:35.800] orthodox Jews were detained during clashes with police. An Argentine president, Christina [25:35.800 --> 25:41.480] Fred Nendiz, the Kirchner, has been diagnosed with cancer and will undergo an operation in January. [25:41.480 --> 25:46.920] Her government says the cancer is in her thyroid gland, excuse me, and has not spread to other [25:46.920 --> 25:51.400] parts of her body. Fernandez recently began her second term as president after a last [25:51.400 --> 26:00.360] slide election victory. [26:00.360 --> 26:05.000] Coming up later in the Splatoon final ceremonies for North Korea's late leader, Kim Jong-il, [26:05.000 --> 26:30.600] do stay with us. [26:35.160 --> 26:52.680] How to shelter in place? Sometimes they have like a big old torch out there. They go, [26:53.880 --> 26:55.720] you know, it just blows like that. [26:55.720 --> 27:10.120] Shelter in place is where we ask the public to remain indoors, close outdoors, close all windows. [27:12.120 --> 27:16.760] We would not discount anybody's concerns about living by the refineries. [27:16.760 --> 27:22.360] I think they've been very responsive as an industry. There's no excuse, no excuse. [27:22.360 --> 27:34.200] You will get your daily dose of toxic chemicals. How many people know a child with a cute asthma? [27:38.440 --> 27:40.520] Hello, welcome back to World News here on Press TV. [27:41.560 --> 27:45.560] Hundreds of activists have demonstrated in a front of Cairo City Council to show solidarity [27:45.560 --> 27:50.200] with Samira, a woman who was forced by the Army to undergo virginity test. [27:50.200 --> 27:54.200] The court has recently ordered military prisons to stop such tests. [27:54.200 --> 27:56.760] Karim Gamaleteen has been following that story from Cairo. [28:00.440 --> 28:06.120] An Egyptian court has ordered that forced virginity tests be stopped on female detainees in military [28:06.120 --> 28:11.000] prisons. The decision was made after a case was brought by a protestor Samira Ibrahim. [28:11.000 --> 28:15.880] She was forced by the Army to undergo a virginity test after she was arrested during the protest [28:15.880 --> 28:21.160] in Cairo's liberation square in March. Samira told Press TV that many women have lost their [28:21.160 --> 28:26.760] trust in the Army, especially after such brutal acts, and she also called for the downfall [28:26.760 --> 28:28.280] of the country's ruling hunter. [28:29.480 --> 28:32.840] If you have to leave, the scam must step down, leave, leave. [28:32.840 --> 28:38.200] Meanwhile, hundreds of activists demonstrated outside the city council in solidarity with Samira, [28:38.200 --> 28:41.800] and all the women who were tortured by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. [28:41.800 --> 28:46.760] They call for the immediate transition of power to an elected civilian authority and have warned [28:46.760 --> 28:50.280] that a second revolution will take place on January 25th. [28:50.280 --> 28:54.920] Ahmad Harara, an activist who has lost sight in both his eyes and clashes with the government [28:54.920 --> 29:11.320] forces, urged them to respond to the demands of the revolution. [29:11.320 --> 29:15.960] Other activists have expressed their anger and frustration with the military council, [29:15.960 --> 29:20.760] and denounced all the violations committed by the staff against the Egyptian women, [29:20.760 --> 29:25.160] and all the peaceful protesters calling for an enemy to military rule. [29:25.160 --> 29:31.880] The whole world saw the army brutally crack down on females, and this is unacceptable by [29:31.880 --> 29:37.080] all means, and the only solution to bring an end to all this is the needed transition to power. [29:37.080 --> 29:42.280] We had enough with the army, and the only solution to bring an end to all this is immediate [29:42.280 --> 29:44.760] transition of power to elected civilians. [29:44.760 --> 29:52.360] After the revolution, revolutions have called for an end to the discriminatory and [29:52.360 --> 29:55.400] patriarchal attitudes of the scoff towards women in Egypt. [29:55.400 --> 30:00.040] As many believe these acts are standing in the way of the reform process in post-revolution [30:00.040 --> 30:03.320] Egypt, getting them at a theme, a press-TV Cairo. [30:05.560 --> 30:08.280] North Korea has begun two days of funeral ceremonies, [30:08.280 --> 30:12.440] first late leader Kim Jong-il, with a huge procession in the capital. [30:12.440 --> 30:17.080] Hundreds of thousands of wailing mourners brave the winter conditions to pay the respects [30:17.080 --> 30:17.880] to the late leader. [30:22.360 --> 30:26.760] Hundreds of thousands of mourners lined the snowy streets of Pyongyang [30:26.760 --> 30:32.360] and brave the freezing temperatures to catch a glimpse of the hers carrying Kim Jong-il's coffin. [30:33.480 --> 30:39.320] Elimazine bearing a huge portrait of a smiling Kim led the funeral quartetage as crowds [30:39.320 --> 30:45.880] wrapped in the streets, Kim Sun and Successor Kim Jong-un and other top military and civilian [30:45.880 --> 30:49.000] officials walked beside the car carrying the coffin. [30:51.720 --> 30:54.600] The snow is endlessly falling like tears. [30:54.600 --> 31:00.040] How could this kind of cry when we've lost our general who was a great man from the heavens? [31:00.600 --> 31:07.640] As we have separated from the general by death, people, mountains and sky are all shedding tears on blood. [31:07.640 --> 31:12.600] Kim Jong-il died of a heart attack on December 17th. [31:13.400 --> 31:16.040] He had led North Korea for 17 years. [31:17.000 --> 31:21.080] In the week since Kim El died, St. Media's called Kim Jong-un, [31:21.080 --> 31:26.440] owned the great successor and referred to him as a leader of the military and the party. [31:26.440 --> 31:30.040] Kim Jong-il left behind a nuclear arm's aid. [31:30.040 --> 31:35.160] Multinational talks aimed at this army North Korea have been deadlocked for months. [31:35.160 --> 31:40.040] North Korea conducted two nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, [31:40.040 --> 31:42.360] drawing tightened human sanctions. [31:42.360 --> 31:46.680] Although it's yet too early to predict North Korea's political future, [31:46.680 --> 31:49.720] almost wait and see whether a change in the leadership [31:49.720 --> 31:53.320] would bring any change whatsoever to the country's policies. [31:57.080 --> 32:00.200] One of the 2000 candidates have registered for Iran's upcoming [32:00.200 --> 32:05.160] parliamentary elections. The registration process will be wrapped up on Friday and authorities [32:05.160 --> 32:09.160] insist that will not be extended. The legislative vote is scheduled for March. [32:09.720 --> 32:13.320] The candidates, among other things, must be committed to Iran's constitution [32:13.320 --> 32:15.400] and the principles of this Islamic establishment. [32:22.360 --> 32:27.320] India's anti-graph campaigner Anna Hazara has called off his plan 3-day hunger strike. [32:27.320 --> 32:31.560] The plan aimed to press the government to redraft the key anti-corruption bill. [32:31.560 --> 32:37.080] 74-year-old Hazara has cited health concerns but says he will continue his fight against corruption. [32:37.080 --> 32:39.880] Addressing the media at the venue of his fast and Mumbai, [32:39.880 --> 32:44.120] Hazara also vowed to step up this campaign to turn voters against the ruling party. [32:44.680 --> 32:48.040] The warning came as the lower House of Parliament passed a controversial [32:48.040 --> 32:54.520] look-up or so-called bootzone bill. This amid widespread unrest and scandals involving [32:54.520 --> 32:59.000] ministers and senior officials. Hazara and his supporters accused the government of pushing [32:59.000 --> 33:03.560] through a week-build. Hazara has become the figurehead of the fight against corruption since [33:03.560 --> 33:06.040] his 12-day hunger strike in the capital in August. [33:09.560 --> 33:13.320] Members of the global computer hacking group anonymous say they have obtained thousands of [33:13.320 --> 33:17.640] credit card numbers and personal information from high profile clients of the leading and [33:17.640 --> 33:22.040] a liticle intelligence company all in the name of charity. [33:22.040 --> 33:24.040] Presbyes Colin Campbell tells us more. [33:28.040 --> 33:33.400] Authorities say the underground computer hacking group anonymous is engaging in cyber warfare. [33:33.400 --> 33:45.720] We aren't a group. We're an idea. We're an expression of the anger that every person feels. [33:45.720 --> 33:49.960] Members of the group anonymous say they have stolen credit card information for the purpose of [33:49.960 --> 33:55.880] charity. About $1 million was reportedly stolen from Stratford in Austin, Texas, a leading [33:55.880 --> 34:01.240] provider of military, economic, and political analysis for clients that include Apple and the [34:01.240 --> 34:06.520] US Air Force. They released their name, a credit card number, the expiration date. [34:06.520 --> 34:12.600] Anonymous is a network of computer savvy users who engage in activism, computer activism, [34:12.600 --> 34:18.200] an operation began in June 2011 with an attack on the serious organized crime agency. [34:18.200 --> 34:22.760] The UK's National Law Enforcement Agency since then, anonymous went after the [34:22.760 --> 34:29.240] governments of Brazil, Tunisia, Anzambabae, NATO, and various US law enforcement websites [34:29.240 --> 34:35.000] and even Fox News. Anonymous has made worldwide headlines for hacks the group claims to have [34:35.000 --> 34:41.320] carried out websites such as MasterCard, Visa, and PayPal have been targeted to name a few. [34:41.320 --> 34:46.760] The group posts videos on the internet, sometimes the messages are cryptic. At other times, [34:46.760 --> 34:52.520] it discusses the need for sweeping government reforms. This video criticizes the National Defense [34:52.520 --> 34:57.080] Authorization Act and discourages President Obama from signing it into law. [34:57.080 --> 35:03.800] The entire US into the embattled ground in Poland to US military forces can operate with impunity, [35:03.800 --> 35:09.160] overriding policy contentism granting the military and the absolute power to arrest, [35:09.160 --> 35:14.200] detained, interrogated and even assassinated US citizens with impunity. [35:14.200 --> 35:19.800] It's almost farsical. Well, it would be farsical if it were in so frightening. [35:19.800 --> 35:24.840] The group receives widespread criticism, but insists it's only acting in the interests of the [35:24.840 --> 35:29.960] underrepresented, sort of like a modern-day Robin Hood. Anonymous says it will target an [35:29.960 --> 35:35.240] entire consumer database from an online military and law enforcement supply store next. [35:35.880 --> 35:38.680] Colin Campbell, Press TV, Washington. [35:40.600 --> 35:44.120] That's a for-worldness on Press TV. Stay tuned. I'm going to be telling you about the more [35:44.120 --> 35:46.760] emphasis on the news momentarily. Do stay with us. [35:46.760 --> 35:54.200] And coming up in the more interesting side of the news, no more tiring stirs climbing [35:54.200 --> 35:57.160] for the locals of an impoverished neighborhood in Colombia. [35:57.160 --> 36:19.080] And a crocodile with a long record of bad behavior goes naughty again. [36:19.080 --> 36:22.840] Jacques Monsieur was arrested in the US in August 2009. [36:22.840 --> 36:28.040] He is one of the five biggest illegal arms dealers in the world. [36:30.280 --> 36:36.440] 400 Serbian tanks, 30,000 soldiers, hundreds of cannons and even fighter planes. [36:36.440 --> 36:41.800] The United Nations voted for an arms embargo. Why was this decision made? [36:41.800 --> 36:45.720] We hope we could contain the serves and that they'd stop their offensive. [36:45.720 --> 36:49.240] And instead of dividing people, we'd stop them from attacking each other. [36:49.240 --> 36:52.200] Why didn't you come with an army of 1,000 soldiers? [36:52.200 --> 36:54.680] What army? What soldiers? We didn't have any. [36:54.680 --> 37:00.440] We found one of the end user certificates used by Jacques Monsieur to get arms into Croatian. [37:01.080 --> 37:06.840] In reality, he was the one who organized the purchase and the delivery of the weapons. [37:06.840 --> 37:13.560] He was tried again in France in 2008 for arm trafficking in Togo, Congo, Kazakhstan, and Settar. [37:13.560 --> 37:21.160] Hello, and welcome back. Let's take a look at some of those interesting stories. [37:21.160 --> 37:26.520] First off, life has just become a little easier for locals living in a slum on a steep hillside [37:26.520 --> 37:31.480] in a poor Colombian neighborhood, authorities in the country's second biggest city, Medine, [37:31.480 --> 37:37.000] have recently inaugurated what is said to be the world's first outdoor escalator for domestic purposes. [37:37.720 --> 37:42.520] It replaces hundreds of concrete steps locals use to climb up and down every day. [37:42.520 --> 37:48.280] The bannier stairs stretch some 130 meters and are made of state-of-the-art materials designed [37:48.280 --> 37:53.240] to withstand all weather conditions. They're especially welcomed by the handicapped and the elderly [37:53.240 --> 37:56.440] for whom getting up and down the hill used to be a major challenge. [38:01.640 --> 38:07.400] Wonderful. It is a dream come true, and I was one of the first ones to use them. It is wonderful. [38:07.400 --> 38:13.800] Zookeeper, so we're mowing the lawn at an Australian reptile park in Australia. [38:13.800 --> 38:21.000] It did not have the slightest idea what was lying in weight for them. A 500 kilogram saltwater [38:21.000 --> 38:26.760] crocodile plunged out of the blue grabbing not the man who was mowing the lawn, but as lawnmower, [38:27.400 --> 38:32.040] the monster crock named Elvis then dragged the mower to a pool from where he'd launched his [38:32.040 --> 38:37.320] ambush, Elvis lost two teeth in the course of this attack. The keeper's next challenge was to [38:37.320 --> 38:41.480] retrieve their instruments as the reptile spent the rest of the day guarding the mower. [38:47.240 --> 38:51.640] Planes to get that mower out firstly, and we'll just try and drag it backwards, [38:52.680 --> 38:57.080] lure the crock around the other side because he's dropped two monsters teeth while the attack [38:57.080 --> 39:03.240] mower and then we'll get nice take-out. The officials of the zoo say Elvis has a long history [39:03.240 --> 39:09.400] of bad behavior. The 50-year-old crocodile was captured in 2008 after bullying locals in Darwin [39:09.400 --> 39:20.200] Harbour and climbing aboard fishing boats. The video from a pet African bullfrog has created [39:20.200 --> 39:24.840] a frenzy since it was uploaded on the internet about a week ago. The video has been viewed more than [39:24.840 --> 39:30.200] 7 million times so far. It shows the frog trying to eat ants displayed on the screen of a [39:30.200 --> 39:36.520] smartphone. After several tries, the frustrated amphibian takes his rage out on a teasing owner [39:36.520 --> 39:41.000] and bites down on his thumb. The more all the story, don't mess with bullfrogs. [39:41.000 --> 39:55.160] That was the look of the more interesting side of the news here on Press TV. Thanks for watching. [23:59.000 --> 41:05.000] last October, the employees of France Telecom paid silent tribute to [41:05.000 --> 41:09.640] a colleague who had recently committed suicide. Do you know why you're here? I can't [41:09.640 --> 41:14.920] understand how you are able to do this. If you want to win the war, they will obviously be deaths. [41:14.920 --> 41:19.880] Pardon? Is it me you're speaking to like that? You must leave. Some have lost their voice. [41:19.880 --> 41:24.440] Some are losing their hair or teeth. There will be deaths. I was finished. [41:24.440 --> 41:29.160] I am going to go to the office with my gun. I'm going to kill myself. [41:29.160 --> 41:34.360] I would say probably intentionally by France Telecom caused these problems. [41:34.360 --> 41:39.880] The problem is that employees like Vincent whom the company wanted to quit felt intimidated [41:39.880 --> 41:43.960] and bullied by the methods used. They want to push me over the edge. [41:43.960 --> 42:04.600] The problem is that many people didn't leave that oppression phase and now they are dead. [42:04.600 --> 42:16.440] The commander of Iran's Navy says Tehran can easily close the strategic [42:16.440 --> 42:21.000] straight-of-home modes of necessary. Iran early warned it would stop the flow of oil through [42:21.000 --> 42:25.080] the straight-of-home modes of foreign sanctions were imposed on its crude exports. [42:25.080 --> 42:27.800] Iran is currently holding naval maneuvers in the Persian Gulf. [42:27.800 --> 42:37.000] The leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution says the revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa [42:37.000 --> 42:42.040] are anti-American. I told us that if harmony criticized the U.S. for adopting contradictory [42:42.040 --> 42:47.240] stances towards regional countries, he added any democratic and patriotic leader to be elected [42:47.240 --> 42:49.960] in these countries will oppose the U.S. and Zionists. [42:52.600 --> 42:55.640] Israel has threatened to attack the Gaza Strip once again. [42:55.640 --> 43:00.120] Israel's general many guns says the attack in the coastal strip is not a matter of choice [43:00.120 --> 43:05.400] but a war of necessity for Tel Aviv. It says the war must be initiated by Israel and has to be [43:05.400 --> 43:07.000] quote swift and painful. [43:12.680 --> 43:17.480] Syria has released 755 prisoners who were involved in unrest in the past few months. [43:17.480 --> 43:21.480] State media say the freedom inmates were not involved in acts of violence. [43:21.480 --> 43:25.400] This is the Air League observers are planning to visit the cities of Derah, Hama, and [43:25.400 --> 43:27.800] Idlib to investigate months of violence. [43:33.000 --> 43:37.640] In Yemen, a civilian has been shot dead in clashes between forces loyal to Al-Koingrua, [43:37.640 --> 43:40.920] Ali Abdullah Saleh and opposition fighters in the capital son-up. [43:40.920 --> 43:45.080] Three others have been injured in the gun battle. Meanwhile, protest rallies continue across [43:45.080 --> 43:54.600] the Arab country demanding the trial of Saleh. In Saudi Arabia, at least four protesters, [43:54.600 --> 43:59.400] including a young boy have been wounded as a crackdown on anti-wishing protest continues. [43:59.400 --> 44:03.720] The young victim is in critical condition. Demonstrators were attacked while protesting the [44:03.720 --> 44:06.760] rate of homes by Saudi security forces in eastern province. [44:06.760 --> 44:16.600] Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says he is ready to set an negotiating table with the [44:16.600 --> 44:20.600] opposition to discuss the less fraud in the recent parliamentary election. [44:20.600 --> 44:24.520] He'd rejected earlier opposition calls for revealing the election results which are [44:24.520 --> 44:25.560] alleged to be rigged. [44:25.560 --> 44:37.240] And finally, North Korea is holding a two-day funeral service for its late leader Kim Jong-il. [44:37.240 --> 44:40.440] Thousands are expected to take part in the event in Pyongyang. [44:40.440 --> 44:59.560] North Korea leader died of a heart attack on December 17 after leading the state for 17 years. [44:59.560 --> 45:08.840] The year 2011, what a year it has been. A year in which the new year was [45:08.840 --> 45:14.120] rung in with U.S. assassination drawn attacks in Pakistan. He ran even captured a CIA [45:14.120 --> 45:19.880] drone while the civilian nuclear program pursued by Iran with the IEA was yet again [45:19.880 --> 45:25.240] questioned by the IEA for the financial crisis of the U.S. to the American awakening. [45:25.240 --> 45:33.480] Europe fared no better with the Eurozone debt crisis and anti-Australia protests [45:33.480 --> 45:39.080] such as in the U.K. the most violence in decades. Press TV was there especially with [45:39.080 --> 45:45.160] this in-depth look as presented in press TV news analysis and its guests and press TV [45:45.160 --> 45:49.400] programs and roundtable discussions took us through a journey of discovery. [45:49.400 --> 45:54.440] But it was surely the year of the Arab uprising and revolutions. [46:02.280 --> 46:06.760] The Slamic awakening that shaped news for the year 2011. [46:06.760 --> 46:20.120] So join me, cover Tahuay for reality checks here in review 2011 at the following times only on press TV. [46:37.720 --> 46:58.040] November 7, 2010. The first elections in two decades. It was an occasion that a [46:58.040 --> 47:03.560] majority of people in Myanmar and those living overseas had been waiting with baited breads. [47:03.560 --> 47:10.680] Could it be a clarion call for the country? Would it signal the start of a new era where a [47:10.680 --> 47:19.000] civilian government would take power? Free and fair were not the case. [47:19.880 --> 47:26.040] Universal suffrage even less so. A chunk of the population was disenfranchised from the voting [47:26.040 --> 47:32.840] process. Many activists in exile call the elections are sham. Analyst with more moderate views [47:32.840 --> 47:39.080] were cautiously optimistic. Pro-government parties call the event historic and a new chapter [47:39.080 --> 47:45.080] that would pave the way towards democracy. Days after elections, the country's opposition leader [47:45.080 --> 47:50.120] Olson Succi was freed from an owner-north house arrest that had lasted about two decades. [47:51.320 --> 47:57.960] She's formally called door or the lady amongst her people. Since her election victory 1990, [47:57.960 --> 48:04.200] when she won over 80% of the popular vote in a subsequent house arrest, she turned into an [48:04.200 --> 48:10.040] international icon. November 13, 2010 marked the expiration of a detention. [48:10.760 --> 48:15.480] And it was an event that was greeted with even greater enthusiasm than the elections, [48:15.480 --> 48:20.360] by crowds that gathered outside a home in Yangon. Dorsucci had been freed. [48:20.360 --> 48:29.640] Despite reprimanding from the international community, a government that called itself civilian [48:29.640 --> 48:36.760] was inaugurated on April 14, 2011, claiming an end to five decades of military rule. [48:40.920 --> 48:47.320] Just over a year since elections, what is the prognosis? A complex political history and [48:47.320 --> 48:52.920] huge divisions between different segments of Myanmar society has meant that there's no single [48:52.920 --> 48:59.080] yardstick that can effectively measure progressive change. But there's certain core areas and [48:59.080 --> 49:04.920] dire need of justice and reform that must be taken into account when discussing Myanmar. [49:04.920 --> 49:09.720] These complex issues roughly fall under five categories that I aim to explore. [49:10.440 --> 49:16.040] An evolving political military structure, free speech, economic progress, [49:16.040 --> 49:20.120] peace and ethnic minority regions, and basic human rights for all. [49:29.800 --> 49:35.000] Military and governments, the two terms of intertwined in Myanmar's political [49:35.000 --> 49:39.800] system since 1962. But there have been recent reports such as the one by the [49:39.800 --> 49:44.280] international crisis group that claim that major reform is already underway. [49:44.280 --> 49:49.960] The report adds that what it calls a semi-civilian government must be commended for current [49:49.960 --> 49:56.120] efforts in order to energize reformists inside the country to further advocate political and [49:56.120 --> 50:01.960] economic restructuring. The pertinent question here is if reform in the socio-economic and [50:01.960 --> 50:08.200] political spheres can be implemented in practice. On Neng O former activists from the 1980 [50:08.200 --> 50:13.960] generation who heads the Vahu Development Institute based in Thailand is optimistic that [50:13.960 --> 50:20.760] Myanmar has headed an positive track. We haven't had democracy for so long since 1960 to all we [50:20.760 --> 50:29.240] had was the military rule. I mean even current system you might want to say it's an [50:29.240 --> 50:54.360] indirect military rule. So it's clear that it's better and there's still a lot of [50:54.360 --> 51:00.200] taking a step back. He does point out that as with any transition the future months will be [51:00.200 --> 51:06.360] fought with risks and uncertainties. But that changes have taken place in mentality of leaders [51:06.360 --> 51:13.080] and institutions of governance. With the new constitution, I mean it's just like a bit like an [51:13.080 --> 51:19.880] experiment. You know we are a big groping in the dark. You know that we seem [51:19.880 --> 51:24.120] the light at the end of the tunnel. The creation of new institutions like relations, the [51:24.120 --> 51:29.400] power of us. The various ministry, new ministry, for instance like we have an [51:29.400 --> 51:37.320] ministry of environment, something we didn't have before. So there is a very healthy kind of [51:37.880 --> 51:44.120] debate going on. David Matheson is senior researcher at Human Rights Watch and has observed [51:44.120 --> 51:49.880] the dynamics between the military and ethnic minority communities for the past many years. [51:49.880 --> 51:55.080] And his primary concern amidst the current climate is a continuing eye and grip of the military [51:55.080 --> 52:02.040] over Myanmar and its ethnic minorities. The biggest issue I think facing the military and the [52:02.040 --> 52:09.160] government and let's face it they're one and the same pretty much is military reform. I think that's [52:09.160 --> 52:17.960] the big lurking issue that no one's really talking about. And in some ways it's an interesting [52:19.080 --> 52:22.840] dilemma for them because they're all formed in military offices. So they come from that culture [52:22.840 --> 52:27.800] of impunity. The government's laid out a fairly ambitious set of priorities, economic reform, [52:27.800 --> 52:35.480] countercorruption, a legislative agenda that includes a trade union law, freedom of assembly bills, [52:35.480 --> 52:40.920] all this stuff is great stuff in theory. And we hope that they're actually very sincere about it. [52:47.560 --> 52:54.280] Closed country, the worst country to be a blogger amongst the lowest in the press freedom index. [52:54.280 --> 53:00.520] These are labels often associated with Myanmar due to a highly restricted environment for journalists, [53:00.520 --> 53:07.240] activists, labor unions and protests of most kinds. Over 1900 political prisoners are [53:07.240 --> 53:11.720] purportedly serving decades long sentences in prisons across the country. [53:12.280 --> 53:16.840] But there has been visible movement from the government over the past few months in the areas [53:16.840 --> 53:23.880] of freedom of speech and association. The lifting of the ban on international media outlets such as BBC [53:23.880 --> 53:29.880] and exile media such as Democratic Voice of Burma, the publishing of an exile editor's interview [53:29.880 --> 53:35.480] including controversial topics such as political prisoners, and the unprecedented coverage of [53:35.480 --> 53:41.800] protests inside the country. These might seem like insignificant moves to a majority of the world, [53:42.200 --> 53:48.040] but one has to retrace events to just a few years ago in Myanmar where such acts were unthinkable. [53:48.040 --> 54:04.040] It was the first time many across the world witnessed a people's revolution in Myanmar [54:04.040 --> 54:07.480] led by its spiritual leaders on their television screens. [54:08.360 --> 54:12.200] When hundreds of thousands of Buddhist monks took to the streets and defined [54:12.200 --> 54:19.080] of the then ruling junta on August 15, 2007, the world watched with trepidation. [54:20.040 --> 54:25.480] The regime's use of mass arrest murder, torture and imprisonment has failed to distinguish [54:25.480 --> 54:31.320] our desire for freedom, though stolen from us many years ago. We have taken their best [54:31.320 --> 54:38.280] punch. Burma's after-in-revolution is just beginning. Gambiro was a prime figure in organizing the [54:38.280 --> 54:45.880] protest bravely wrote. At age 35 and four years after protests he remains behind bars of Myanmar. [54:45.880 --> 54:51.480] A prisoner of conscience with rapidly deteriorating health due to torture he suffered at the hands [54:51.480 --> 54:56.680] of prison guards. Bochi knows the hardships of being in prison from his own experience. [54:57.240 --> 55:02.760] He served more than seven years in Myanmar's notorious prison system before fleeing to the border, [55:02.760 --> 55:09.080] where he had the assistant association for political prisoners. Seven years in prison, it must have [55:09.080 --> 55:15.720] been a very testing period. I was arrested for two times. For the first time was [55:15.720 --> 55:21.640] 1990 to 1993. At that time I was arrested because I did a demonstration, [55:21.640 --> 55:25.880] calling for the release of all students' detainees from prison. Intelligence [55:25.880 --> 55:31.080] or military officers said to me, three years imprisonment is not enough for me. Therefore I [55:31.080 --> 55:36.680] was arrested again. The state of Myanmar officially denies the existence of political prisoners [55:36.680 --> 55:41.240] and they've been staunchly juxtaposed against AAPP's broad definitions. [55:41.800 --> 55:47.160] Our division is those who involve in never-ending action or resistant mean [55:48.120 --> 55:54.120] are political prisoners. AAPP's efforts were partly rewarded with the release of about 235 [55:54.120 --> 56:00.040] political prisoners in October as part of a general amnesty granted by the president. [56:00.040 --> 56:05.800] Benjamin Zawaki at Amnesty International is the lead researcher on Myanmar. He points out that [56:05.800 --> 56:11.560] given the array of recent developments, it is no longer feasible to assess Myanmar through a black and [56:11.560 --> 56:16.600] white lens. The purpose of the paper that I wrote was to say that, look, neither one of these two [56:16.600 --> 56:23.240] campuses exclusively correct. There has been for decades, reasons for real pessimism in the country, [56:23.240 --> 56:27.400] and most of those reasons still exist. But the optimists have a point as well, [56:27.400 --> 56:33.480] in pointing to certain changes that happened this year, that would have been simply inconceivable a [56:33.480 --> 56:38.840] year ago. Ball statements by ten-spay director of the censorship board on the inevitability [56:38.840 --> 56:45.000] or free media for Myanmar continue to make headlines. Triggering heated discussion amongst [56:45.000 --> 56:49.160] analysts across the spectrum. The times it has decreased and that of times we've seen [56:50.040 --> 56:55.560] incidents where it seems to be on the rise again. But by a large we can say throughout 2011, [56:55.560 --> 57:00.760] the degree of censorship in the country has decreased. On songs who she is now frequently written [57:00.760 --> 57:06.040] about in the press, she was of course person and on grata in the press for years, if not decades, [57:06.600 --> 57:11.480] she herself has been allowed to publish a piece on the front page of a publication. [57:11.480 --> 57:16.360] Another sector that is experienced tangible progress largely due to successful efforts [57:16.360 --> 57:21.480] by the international labor organization is a formation of labor unions. [57:21.480 --> 57:26.920] I'm happy I've been any legal changes and how has that changed.
