Early 8N Steering Box Rebuild. Yes, they can be rebuilt. I am currently working on a 1949 8n. I recently purchased an 8n ford with a late serial number. I have seen lots of posts on how to adjust the newer 8n tractors steering, but the older ones don't have that system. The steering box on our 1948 8n is not well. My plan is a complete rebuild of this old box, new seals and proper oil to be used for lube after rebuild. I completely rebuilt my early 8n steering box to eliminate the slop in the steering. But, they also have some adjustments to take out some slop. The early steering box like you probably have there is. I have disassembled and inspected the entire box and have found a broken ball in the body of the case. The steering box was shot and i disassembled it and found both steering shaft.
