Assessing Your Current Floor
Before you begin, a careful inspection is essential to determine if your existing floor is suitable for a floating installation. Any signs of moisture damage, deep flex, or pest infestation must be addressed before proceeding.

Checking for Stability and Levelness
Walk across the floor and listen for any persistent squeaks or hollow sounds, which indicate loose boards or gaps. Use a long level or a straightedge to check for significant dips or rises in the surface. If the deviation is more than 3/16 of an inch over a 6-foot span, you will likely need to self-level the subfloor or install battens to create a stable base for the new boards.

Trim the edges of the underlayment with a utility knife, leaving a slight overlap around the perimeter to ensure full coverage without compromising the wall expansion gap.
Installing the First Row
Begin the installation along the longest straight wall in the room, usually the hallway or a main pathway. This starting point ensures that any minor deviations in the room's width are hidden in less visible areas. Place the first plank with the groove side facing the wall, maintaining the recommended expansion gap of about a quarter of an inch between the board and the wall.
