Extend Your IKEA EKEDELEN Table: A Comprehensive Guide
If you're a fan of IKEA's EKEDELEN table, you're not alone. Its clean lines, sturdy build, and affordable price point make it a popular choice for many homes. But what if you need a bit more space? Here's a step-by-step guide on how to extend your IKEA EKEDELEN table, ensuring it continues to serve you well.
Understanding the EKEDELEN Table Extension
The EKEDELEN table comes with a clever extension leaf that allows you to increase its surface area when needed. This feature makes it perfect for small spaces that require flexibility. Before we dive into the extension process, let's understand the components:
- Table Top: The main surface of the table.
- Legs: The sturdy, black metal legs that support the table top.
- Extension Leaf: The foldable piece that increases the table's surface area.
- Extension Mechanism: The metal bar and bracket system that allows the leaf to extend and retract.
Preparation: Gather Your Tools
Before you start, make sure you have the following tools on hand:
- A Phillips head screwdriver
- A rubber mallet (optional, but helpful)
- Patience (trust us, it's a virtue when dealing with furniture assembly)
Step-by-Step: Extending Your EKEDELELEN Table
1. Clear the Area
Start by ensuring the area around your table is clear. Remove any items that might be on the table or nearby to give yourself enough space to work.
2. Locate the Extension Mechanism
Turn the table on its side. You'll see a metal bar running along the underside of the table top. This is the extension mechanism. It's secured in place by two screws. Use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove these screws.
3. Release the Extension Leaf
With the screws removed, the extension mechanism should slide out. This will release the extension leaf, allowing it to fold out. If it's stuck, a gentle tap with a rubber mallet can help.
4. Extend the Leaf
Once the leaf is released, fold it out. It should click into place, securing itself in the extended position. If it doesn't, check that the mechanism is properly aligned and try again.
5. Secure the Mechanism
With the leaf extended, slide the extension mechanism back into place. Make sure it's properly aligned with the table top. Once it's in place, secure it with the screws you removed earlier.
6. Test the Extension
Gently lift the table back onto its legs. The extension leaf should now be flush with the table top, providing you with extra space. To retract the leaf, follow these steps in reverse.
Tips for Maintaining Your EKEDELEN Table
With regular use, the extension mechanism on your EKEDELEN table may become loose. To tighten it, simply remove the screws, slide the mechanism out, and tap it back into place with a rubber mallet. Replace the screws and test the extension.
If you find that the extension leaf is wobbly when extended, it might be that the table top has warped slightly over time. This is a common issue with wooden furniture. To fix this, you can try placing a shim (a small piece of wood or cardboard) under the wobbly leg to level the table top.
Conclusion
Extending your IKEA EKEDELEN table is a simple process that can significantly increase its functionality. Whether you're hosting a dinner party or working on a large project, your table is now ready to adapt to your needs. Happy extending!
