Building a step on a deck is a fundamental carpentry task that transforms an elevated platform into a functional and safe entry point. Before diving into the construction, it is essential to understand the anatomy of a deck step. A typical step consists of three primary components: the stringer, which is the angled support structure; the treads, which are the horizontal surfaces you step on; and the risers, the vertical boards that fill the gap between each tread. Planning and Measurement
The success of your project hinges on precise planning. You must first measure the total vertical distance, or "rise," from the deck ledger board to the ground level. Dividing this number by the ideal step height—usually around 7 to 7.5 inches—will determine the number of steps required. Once you know the rise, calculate the run, or the depth of each step, ensuring it falls between 10 to 11 inches. Mark these measurements clearly on 2x12 pressure-treated lumber, which is the standard material for durability and resistance to rot.

Creating the Stringer Template
Rather than cutting the angles freehand, creating a template ensures consistency and accuracy. Lay a scrap piece of lumber flat on a surface and mark the rise and run dimensions as a right angle. Connect the marks to form the diagonal line, which represents the angle of your steps. Cut along this line with a circular saw to create a physical template. You can then hold this template against the treated 2x12 board and trace the outline directly onto the wood. This method allows you to replicate the exact angle for multiple stringers if your deck requires more than one step.
Cutting and Assembly
Secure the marked board to a stable work surface using clamps. Using a circular saw, carefully cut along the traced lines to create the stringer layout. If you are making multiple stringers, stack them together and cut them simultaneously to ensure they are identical in size and shape. Once the cuts are complete, inspect the edges for splintering or roughness and sand them down as necessary. Position the stringers vertically under the deck at the desired spacing—usually 16 inches on center—and attach them to the ledger board using structural bolts or lag screws, ensuring they are level and plumb before securing.
With the stringers in place, it is time to attach the treads. Cut the decking boards to the desired length, typically 36 to 48 inches for a standard step, and position them horizontally across the stringers. Use deck screws to fasten the treads to the top of the stringers, driving screws straight through the tread and into the stringer to create a tight bond. It is crucial to leave a small gap—about 1/8 inch—between each tread to allow for water drainage and natural wood expansion. This gap also prevents the buildup of moisture that could lead to decay.

Finishing and Safety Checks
After the treads are secured, you may choose to install risers for a cleaner aesthetic and to block debris from accumulating underneath the steps. Cut the riser boards to fit the vertical space between the treads and attach them with nails or screws. Once the structure is complete, conduct a thorough safety inspection. Apply pressure to the center of each step to test for any flex or movement; the steps should feel solid and anchored. Check the hardware to ensure all screws and bolts are tightened, and verify that the steps are free of splinters or sharp edges that could cause injury.
Finally, protect your work with a durable finish. Applying a high-quality exterior-grade sealer or stain will shield the wood from UV damage, rain, and freezing temperatures, extending the life of your deck step significantly.
