F1 Bmw V10 Engine

This formed the basis for the BMW E41/4 V10 engine with a cylinder bank angle of 72°. The BMW E41/4 was first used in the Williams FW22 on BMW's return to Formula One on 12 March 2000 at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Ralf Schumacher finished third in this race.

The V10 era technically started in 1995, when the FIA limited engine displacement to 3.0 liters. It didn't peak, however, until 2000. In 1995, one of the greatest eras in Formula One history began.

The precursor of the 3.0-litre V10 was the Coventry Climax FWMV 1.5-LITRE V-8 engine (stroke/bore ratio 0.95:1) which in 1961 was one of the first of a new generation of formula one engines designed specifically to run on pump petrol. Recent but fleeting news that Formula 1 may consider returning to V10 engines in the future has sparked excitement over a return to the era of screaming power units. The first and only production V10 developed by BMW M, the S85 V10 was a 500-hp, naturally aspirated beast with Formula 1 pedigree.

This collaboration seamlessly transitioned from sports car racing to Formula 1 when BMW and Williams signed a six-year contract for BMW to supply engines and engineering support from 2000 through 2005. This was the pinnacle of F1's V10 era, where 3.0-liter, 18,000+ RPM engines provided the visceral soundtrack. For much of the 2000s, Lexus has been developing the LFA with a V10 because Toyota's F1 cars have a V10.

Yamaha develops this 8,500rpm unit, which probably has more time lavished on its sound. In this entry, I go in-depth on the history of the V10 F1 era, the BMW Motorsport F1 program and what remained of its influence on the S85 V10 development. Sadly in 2006, F1 banned the use of V10 engines as the sport transitioned to newer generation V8 cars.

The FIA and F1, just like the rest of the world, began caring more about sustainability.
