In the mid 1980s, they released their first diesel engine, the M21. This was based on the venerable M20 engine but with strengthened components to handle the increased forces from a diesel engine. It was available in both 3 Series models as well as 5 Series.

It's rare to see a BMW diesel from the 1980s in the United States. Any models. Ultimately, given these qualities, the BMW diesel was appropriately prepared for the luxury performance class, with the first V8 diesel engine featuring direct fuel injection, which made its debut in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan in 1999.

It was during the spring of 1983 that BMW presented to the world its first diesel-powered car, the 524td sedan. At the time, diesel engines were regarded as being noisy and more suited to trucks. The first diesel engine for the 3 Series arrived in 1985: the 324d boasted 86 hp and could cover almost 34 miles on a single gallon of diesel.
