After being rebuffed by BMW in its bid to purchase the brand's new drive-by-wire V12 that had gone on sale in the 1988 BMW 750iL, the General simply bought an entire 7 Series and hacked the motor out, dropping into the Caprice seen above for testing.
Wow. That must be an old article. it describes the BMW engine as "the big V-12" but later quantifies that as being only 304 CID and making only 300 HP. That's V-6 territory for power, not V-12. In case you're wondering, in that same year (1988), turbo Buicks were making over 300 HP with half as many cylinders and only 231 CID, and most of them are still running. See many '88 BMWs around lately?
Custom Chevy Caprice Pickup Is The Four-Door El Camino Of Your Dreams
The first production drive-by-wire engine management system had debuted in the V12-powered 1988 BMW 750iL. Interested in this new technology, GM sought to purchase a V12 for research. Problem was, BMW would only sell the engine one way, surrounded by the almost $70,000 German flagship sedan. So, GM bought a new 7.
This V-12 Caprice looks production-ready-notice the blacked-out BMW logo. A BMW four-speed automatic transmission backs up the big V-12, which feeds power to the stock Caprice 10.
