Bmw Coolant E39
The use of Original BMW Anti-Freeze/Coolant will ensure sufficient cooling in summer and protection against freeze-ups in winter. BMW Antifreeze/Coolant will also guard your vehicle's various engine components against corrosion. Coolant does more than just keep your engine at optimal temperatures, it protects against corrosion, lowers the boiling point of water, and is specifically formulated for use in your engine.
Make your next cooling system service a proper one with OEM coolant or performance aftermarket coolant and additives from high. Plastics. Your E39 contains lots of it.
The typical first failure of the E39 cooling system is the expansion tank. It will typically develop a hairline crack anywhere from 60-95k miles (give or take a few). That crack will expand under heat and water will leak out.
This will trip the low coolant warning on your dash. Use what's available. I run the prestone green coolant in the majority of my cars, including my e36 which I've owned since 2006 and already had non-BMW coolant in it and my 540i/6 which I've owned since 2008 and you guessed it, already had non-BMW coolant in it and they're both fine because it turns out that cooling systems are made with similar materials.
Unfortunately the e36 experiment. Introduction: This thread is for you if you just purchased your E39 5-Series and/or have more than 75,000 miles on your current cooling system on your E39 5-Series BMW. The E39 5-Series (as well as the E36/E46 3-Series) are known to have somewhat of a delicate cooling system which are sometimes known to fail prematurely.
BMW recommends coolant changes every 3 years. This video demonstrates how to change your own coolant, draining from both the radiator/expansion tank in addition to the engine block. BMW recommends that you replace your engine coolant every 2 to 4 years depending on the year and type of coolant used.
If you only drain the coolant from the radiator you are not getting all of the coolant out of the system as there is coolant left in the block. There is a block drain plug that you can open to drain the coolant in the block. If you replace your water pump you will also drain.
The BMW E39 - E38 Super Duty Cooling Kit is a complete cooling solution for the 1999 to 2003 e38 and e39 series BMWs. It address all of the common failure items; the radiator, the expansion tank and the engine driven fan. It's common to have to replace the coolant expansion tank on a BMW E39 5.
