The use of Original BMW Anti-Freeze/Coolant will ensure sufficient cooling in summer and protection against freeze-ups in winter. The typical first failure of the E39 cooling system is the expansion tank. It will typically develop a hairline crack anywhere from 60-95k miles (give or take a few). That crack will expand under heat and water will leak out.
