The stock 22R head can be used with 22RE intake (if it's an '83 and later head), so there's no need to get an EFI head unless the head you're using is an early 22R head, in which case you'll need to drill and tap three new holes or use the donor EFI head.
Does anyone know whats involved in converting a 22re to a 22r besides swaping the intake and adding a carb? Does anything need to happen to the ECU? What about removing all the sensors? I would like to simplify my 4runner as much as possible. The least amount of stuff that can go wrong with it.
Perhaps I mis-read the original post, I concur that if the decision is to also convert from EFI 22RE to carb'd 22R, yeah I would stick with the EFI, just bolt the intake to the other engine. You will need a different tank, and it will be a pain to adapt the mechanical pump to the EFI fuel line.
The 22r and 22re motors are the same basic block, slight differences in the head, but not anything that should stop yor swap out. The differences are made to acomodate the fuel injection system.

Well, thanks to Air Care Colorado, I've decided to switch to EFI. All my emissions for my carb was pulled off long ago while living in TN and I've been running a weber carb for the past 7 years on my mini. Instead of wasting more money trying to track down and switch everything back to the OEM carb, I've decided to do the EFI swap with all the emissions. I went to Yoda Jim's bought everything.

Hola. I'm considering getting a '89 pickup with a 22r to put into my '85 pickup that has a dead 22re. I'd like to keep the efi after the swap so I don't have to mess with the wiring too much. I've looked for info on this already and I can only find people swapping a 22re into a 22r truck and vice versa. Haven't found anyone that's done this before and told the Internet about it, so here I am.

You can tell by looking for extra intake bolt holes near #2 and #3. Some time in late 85, the 22R and 22RE is the exact same engine. Just a different sticker on the valve cover. This is the motor with flat top pistons and the shorter block, higher compression, closed combustion chamber, etc.
