Coolant For Bmw K75

Changing coolant and reducing fuel tank heat in BMW K-bikes, K1, K75, K100, K1100; 700 watt alternator.

For my water-cooled motorcycles, including K75S bikes, I use a silicate-free coolant. I mix the coolant with distilled water in a 50/50 mixture. Usually when replacing the coolant I will drain the old coolant; then fill the radiator and engine with pure distilled water. I run the bike for a short while to circulate the water with the old coolant.

Bleeding cooling system on k75Did any coolant come out of the overflow tank under the seat on the right side? Before you start the engine again, check the coolant level un the overflow tank and in the filler. Top up the level in the filler and bring the level about half way between the high and low marks on the overflow tank. Start the engine and let it warm up while you carefully squeeze any.

BMW recommends their house brand coolent and there are alot of Kbike owners that will go with whatever BMW recommends. Personally, as long as the container says something like "safe for aluminum" and it is a name brand you are probably OK to use it. I have put 130+ thousand miles on my K75S and have always used plain old Prestone without a problem.

For what it's worth, the bmw brand coolant (from the car dealer) is essentially the same price as any other coolant that seems to fulfil the "Nitrate, phosphate, etc free" that is spec'd for the bike. Last time I bought it, I think it was $17 for a gallon of undiluted stuff, which makes enough for 2 fills of the system on a K75. Do a coolant flush with some radiator flush from autozone, etc.
