From what i know chassis and suspension components between the two are pretty much the same. But they are extremely dissimilar under the hood. As you said it's a four banger. The drivetrain is also different, the stock is300 came with a w55 and the altezza came with the j160.

Dare I say the 2JZ-GE in the normal US spec IS300 is the better motor. Cosmetically it'll look the same as the US spec but with it's own grill and that's about it. The one you probably want is the Altezza RS200 (SXE10). It's got the 3S.
