Bmw Coolant Float Stick

After removing the cap you have to tap the float stick slightly, no need to worry unless you see white residue on or near the tank:thumbup: 2003 540i M. 1998 740iL: new water pump, belts, hoses, coolant, expansion tank, radiator, coolant level sensor, brass bleed screw Bled air 5 times--> seems OK. Temperature gauge holds at the noon position, so I am happy. Why is "check coolant level" message appearing? Put in 2 coolant level sensors in the past 2 years. Red float stick is above the rim (too much coolant) each cold morning.

I check the radiator on my 7 with the car level & cold. Open the radiator cap, & if the red float stick isn't level the top edge of the radiator neck, I add BMW coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water until the float is level with the top of the neck. I don't remove the bleeder screw just to add coolant.

The float is to estimate how much antifreeze you need. Just fill it to about 2.5 inches from the top when cool. Not necessary to replace the coolant reservoir.
