Bmw K100 Coolant

Changing coolant and reducing fuel tank heat in BMW K-bikes, K1, K75, K100, K1100; 700 watt alternator. Coolant? The BMW stuff provides the funding for the dealer's spawn to attend an expensive university. They also want the dealer to do the change.

$$$$ Personally, I use Peak Long Life Coolant. Been using it for 6 years now in 5 different bricks with no issues. I change every other year which translates to about 6,000 miles on my commuter bikes and 12,000 to 15,000 on my touring K75RT.

As far. I have a 91 K100RS, recently acquired and I want to do a coolant change. I was wondering if there are any shortcut methods that do not require complete removal of the fuel tank.

I have the Clymer manual, but seems like alot of stuff to take off just to get to the radiator fill cap. Was going to replace the coolant in the K bike. However, where the manual shows a 5mm drain plug in the water/oil pump housing I have a coolant temp sensor installed for the water temp indicator.

Any advice on which would be better to pull to drain the old coolant? The temp sensor or the water. Attached are instructions from BMW's K75/K100 2V service manual downloadable from the Tech Page here. I have followed these as written.

It takes a bit less than 3 quarts but the block is smaller on a K75 than on a K100. Got it! Not so much a definitive measured amount necessarily. Thank you.

I looked at the coolant path diagram in the BMW Repair Manual and it would seem to indicate that the water pump and thus the coolant temperature sensor are on the radiator side of the thermostatic valve.
