Porcelain for garage flooring. Good idea? I live in Boston area. I have a small 1 car garage which currently has an unfinished concrete flooring.
I am interested in laying some porcelain tiles (preferably with PEI 5 rating). During winters, the garage remains semi heated so I am not worried about cracking issues. I've been through them all- 100% solids epoxy, plastic tiles, regular concrete, etc.
The best floor for a garage is PEI5 porcelain tile. There are lots of reasons, but for normal garage work, including fabrication and welding, PEI 5 porcelain tile is the best choice if you can handle the first cost. Even for a relatively low cost porcelain you're looking at ~$4.00/sq ft for material and then another $6-10/sq ft for install.
Larger format is nice, preferably a 24x24 or even larger. In my opinion, porcelain tile is the gold standard for a durable/attractive/practical floor covering in a garage, but you have to know what to look for when choosing the tile. A permanent coating like they use in factories and shops requires a ton of prep and is expensive. A lot of people also buy porcelain tile on clearance and just tile the floor.
