Polaris Starter Bendix Not Engaging. Here's a photo showing the starter in the background and the bendix. the starter turns fine but the bendix doesn't always engage the flywheel and when it does it drops back out after 1 stroke. on my new 2009 ranger xp the starter bendix will not stay engaged at times and the starter just spins. ranger 500 efi i got in the case today and set a camera up to watch its movement. on most starters the bendix is attached to the starter and is the gear that comes out to meet the teeth on the flywheel. You do have to remove. if that works, you'll see a photo in an earlier post of the bendix trapped behind the flywheel so, yes. Not sure how to upload a video. it sounds like it spins freely, but doesn't engage the flywheel. I noticed it did this. I can pull start it, and once it's warmed up, the starter will.
