Lime Kiln Road History. An almost continuous line of chalk pits lies along the south downs escarpment from washington in the west to glynde in the east. On the left of the towpath, near the cottage, is a lime kiln. A lime kiln was a structure used to manufacture lime (calcium oxide) by burning calcium carbonate at temperatures above 900°c. Chalk and lime from the nearby pits were probably conveyed down mill road for just about as long as flour from the windmill. The remains are substantial but of uncertain date.
