To tie a half hitch, take the leftmost string (1) and bring it over and under the second string (2), then pull it through the loop created. This makes one half hitch. To make a square knot, repeat this with string 1 in the other direction (left to right) Figuer2.png | Left: To tie a half hitch, string 1 goes over and under string 2, then pulls through the loop. Creating the Base

Thread the cords through a tapestry needle and pull them through a ring or onto a dowel rod to keep your work taut. This will be your starting point (or "base") Figuer3.png | Top: Thread your cords through a tapestry needle and pull them through a ring. Bottom: Arranging your cords in a right-facing 'V'.

Spread the cords out into a right-facing 'V'. This will be the foundation for your bracelet.

Making the Square Knots

Now it's time to start knotting. Begin with the rightmost cord (color 1). Make a half hitch using it around the second cord (color 2). Then, take the second cord and make a half hitch around the first Figuer4.png | Left: Make a half hitch with color 1 around color 2. Right: Then, make a half hitch with color 2 around color 1 to create a square knot.

Pull tightly to create your first square knot. Repeat this process, working your way left, until you've made a square knot with each set of cords.

You've just completed one row of your bracelet. Now, move down one set of cords to start the next row. Repeat the process until you have the desired length. For a bracelet, this could be anywhere from 8 to 12 inches, depending on your wrist size Figuer5.png | Right: Continue making square knots, moving down one set of cords at a time. Your bracelet will grow longer with each row.

Once you've reached your desired length, trim any excess cord and add a clasp or buttons for adjustment.

Finishing Touches

To give your bracelet a polished look, use a tapestry needle and thread to weave in the loose ends and give it a neat, finished edge Figuer6.png | Bottom: Use a tapestry needle to weave in loose ends, hiding them within the fabric of the bracelet.

Congratulations, you've just made your first macrame bracelet! Wear it with pride and show it off to your friends and family. As you gain more experience, you can experiment with different colors, materials, and styles to create even more beautiful pieces.

Who knows, you might just find yourself twined in the world of macrame, one delightful knot at a time.
