Transform an ordinary pallet into a stylish and functional coffee table with this DIY project. Pallet wood offers a rustic charm that's perfect for adding a touch of industrial chic to your living space. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create your own DIY coffee table using pallet wood.
Materials Needed
- Pallet wood
- Saw (circular or hand saw)
- Hammer
- Pry bar
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Wood glue
- Screws (2-1/2" and 1-1/4")
- Drill and driver bits
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Clear sealant (polyurethane, varnish, or beeswax)
Disassembling the Pallet
Begin by carefully dismantling the pallet using a hammer and pry bar. Work from one end, gently tapping the pry bar between the boards and pulling them apart. Keep the boards organized by size and type, as you'll need them to create the table's frame and top.
Building the Table Frame
To create the table's base, select four sturdy pallet boards for the legs. Cut two of the boards in half to create four equal-length pieces. These will serve as the legs of your coffee table. Attach the legs to the remaining two full-length boards using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws, creating a rectangular frame.

Adding Support
For added stability, cut two more pallet boards to fit inside the frame, perpendicular to the legs. Attach these supports using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws. This will create a sturdy base for your tabletop.
Creating the Tabletop
Lay out the best pallet boards you have for the tabletop. You may need to cut some boards to size to create an even surface. Once you're satisfied with the layout, attach the boards together using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding.
Attaching the Tabletop
Turn the frame upside down and center the tabletop on top. Attach the tabletop to the frame using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws driven through the supports and into the tabletop. Flip the table right-side up, and you'll have a functional coffee table.

Finishing Touches
Sand the table thoroughly using 120-grit sandpaper, followed by 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. Wipe away any dust with a damp cloth. If desired, stain or paint the table to match your decor. Allow the stain or paint to dry completely before applying a clear sealant to protect the wood.
Enjoy your new DIY coffee table, made with love and a little elbow grease from repurposed pallet wood. This unique piece will not only add charm to your living space but also serve as a conversation starter among your guests.
