Transforming Waste into Wonder: A DIY Pallet High Top Table
In the world of upcycling, few materials are as versatile and abundant as the humble pallet. These often discarded wooden platforms can be transformed into stunning, functional pieces of furniture, like the DIY pallet high top table. This article will guide you through the process of creating a unique, industrial-chic table that's perfect for gaming nights, home bars, or as a statement piece in your living room.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. Here's a list to help you get started:
- Pallets (the number depends on the size of your table)
- Screws (2.5" and 1.5")
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (80- and 120-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Power drill
- Circular saw
- Hammer
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Safety glasses
- Work gloves
- Clamps
Disassemble the Pallets
Begin by disassembling the pallets using a hammer and pry bar. Be careful not to damage the wood, as these pieces will form the structure of your table. You'll need:

- 4 long, sturdy boards for the tabletop
- 4 shorter boards for the legs
- 2 boards for the apron (the sides of the table)
Create the Tabletop
Lay out your four longest boards side by side to create the tabletop. Use wood glue and clamps to attach them together, ensuring the edges are flush. Allow the glue to dry according to the package instructions. Once dry, sand the tabletop smooth with 80- and 120-grit sandpaper.
Assemble the Legs and Apron
Cut your four shorter boards in half to create eight leg pieces. Attach two pieces together using wood glue and 2.5" screws to create four sturdy legs. For the apron, attach the two boards together using wood glue and 1.5" screws, creating a U-shape that will fit around the tabletop.
Attach the Legs and Apron
Position the apron around the tabletop, ensuring it's flush with the edges. Attach it using wood glue and 2.5" screws. Next, attach the legs to the inside of the apron, spacing them evenly apart. Use wood glue and screws to secure them in place. Allow the glue to dry.

Finishing Touches
Once the glue is dry, sand any rough edges or surfaces. If desired, stain or paint your table to match your decor. Allow the finish to dry completely before using your new DIY pallet high top table.
Table Height and Size Variations
To create a standard dining table height, you'll need to cut your leg pieces to around 29" long. For a high top table, cut them to around 42". You can also adjust the size of your tabletop by using more or fewer pallet boards.
Safety First
Always wear safety glasses and work gloves when using power tools. Ensure your workspace is well-ventilated when sanding and staining. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for any tools or materials you use.
