Transform your living space with a unique and eco-friendly addition: a wooden pallet coffee table. This DIY project not only adds a rustic charm to your home but also helps reduce waste. Here's a comprehensive guide to creating your own wooden pallet coffee table, complete with step-by-step instructions and helpful tips.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. You'll need:
- Two wooden pallets in good condition
- Screws (1-1/4" and 2-1/2")
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Power drill
- Circular saw
- Clamps
- Safety glasses
- Work gloves
- Tape measure
Disassemble the Pallets
Carefully disassemble the pallets using a crowbar or pry bar. Keep the boards organized, as you'll need them to match up later. You'll need 16 boards for the base and 8 for the top.

Create the Base
Using the 16 base boards, create a rectangular frame. Cut four boards to the desired length of your table (around 48" for a standard coffee table). Attach these boards together using 1-1/4" screws and wood glue, creating a large rectangle.
Next, cut four boards to the desired width (around 18") and attach them to the inside of the frame using screws and glue, creating a box shape. You should now have a sturdy base for your table.
Add Support and Legs
To add stability, cut two boards to the desired height (around 16") and attach them to the inside of the base, creating legs. Ensure the table is level by measuring from the ground to the top of the table at each corner.

For added support, you can cut and attach additional boards to the inside of the base, creating a crisscross pattern. This will also give your table a unique, rustic look.
Create the Top
Using the 8 top boards, create a solid surface for your table. Lay out the boards side by side, ensuring they fit together snugly. Use clamps to hold them in place while you attach them with screws and glue.
Once the glue is dry, use a circular saw to cut the top to the same dimensions as the base. You should now have a complete table top.
Sand and Finish
Using 120-grit sandpaper, sand the entire table, including the top, base, and legs. This will help the stain or paint adhere better and give your table a smooth finish.
Wipe off any dust, then apply your chosen stain or paint. Allow it to dry completely, then lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper to remove any raised grain. Apply a second coat of stain or paint, if desired.
Assemble the Table
Finally, attach the table top to the base using 2-1/2" screws. Ensure the top is level and centered. Your wooden pallet coffee table is now complete and ready to be enjoyed!
