Gear Oil Coming Out Of Prop. I went to winterize my boat today and when i lowered the trim down gear oil started dripping out of the propeller. Gear oil leaking from prop area, hard fix???? I would pull the prop and clean the area up with solvent and observe it for a day or two. My first check would be to make sure the gearcase had not been accidently overfilled with gear oil. I would suspect the oil seal carrier (cone shaped thing under the water pump) or the shift shaft seal. Water coming in and mixing w/gear oil (usually a full reservoir). Oil going out usually indicates problem w/prop shaft seals. Both of those are easy to. Damaged to an outboard’s gearcase can cause oil to seep out of the prop shaft, or make gear lube drip out of the engine’s lower unit. It appears to be gear case oil but based. It's a 94 50hp oil injected. Check your lower unit oil and see if water got in. I lowered the motor to fit the boat in my garage and noticed a real thick oil leaking out of the prop area.
