Smith Machine Bodybuilding Forum. I usually wouldn’t dream of touching the smith. Over the past 25 years i've used the smith machine in times of injury (low back, shoulder) for stability, for getting a quick workout done in a very crowded. One you have to get used to the machine , secondly a smith machine most of them allow very little wiggle room to leverage other. I always thought pressing (at any angle) on the smith machine was anathema in the gym. I've had both, i liked the smith better for all around exercise, but the power rack allowed for things like rack deads, etc. I only fear doing heavy bench with no spotter. I work out alone in my gym in the early a.m. Would using the smith machine be a 'necessary' steps between machines and 'real' bench presses? I was bashing the smith in another post last night and someone wanted some detail as to why i don't like 'em. I've always favored barbells or dumbbells. Or, should i avoid it? I copped out and found an. I normally workout alone and with the safety of the smith i was able to push higher weights on all fronts (bench, shoulder and squat).
