Embarking on a DIY flooring project? B&Q's herringbone flooring is a stylish and durable choice that can transform your space. This guide will walk you through the process of laying herringbone flooring, from preparation to completion, ensuring a professional finish.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before you start, gather the following tools and materials:
- B&Q herringbone flooring
- Underlay (if not integrated)
- PVA adhesive
- Tapping block
- Pull bar
- Chalk line
- Tape measure
- Circular saw or jigsaw
- Hammer
- Safety gear (gloves, goggles, ear protection)
Preparation: Room and Flooring
Start by clearing the room and removing any existing flooring. Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and flat. If necessary, use a self-levelling compound to create a smooth surface.

Acclimatise your flooring to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours before installation. This helps prevent expansion and contraction issues.
Marking Out and Starting the Herringbone Pattern
Measure and mark out the center of the room using a chalk line. This will be the starting point for your herringbone pattern. Begin laying the flooring here, ensuring the first row is straight and square.
For a classic herringbone pattern, lay the flooring at a 45-degree angle to the walls. You can adjust this angle to create different looks, but ensure you maintain consistency throughout the room.

Laying the Flooring
Apply PVA adhesive to the subfloor using a notched trowel. Spread the adhesive evenly, ensuring full coverage.
Lay the first row of flooring, starting at the center line. Use spacers to maintain a consistent gap between the flooring and the walls. Tap the flooring gently into place using a tapping block and hammer.
For subsequent rows, lay the flooring at a 90-degree angle to the previous row, creating the herringbone pattern. Ensure each piece interlocks correctly and is tapped firmly into place.
Use a pull bar to pull the flooring tight against the previous row as you work your way across the room. This helps maintain a consistent gap and prevents the flooring from shifting.
Cutting and Fitting Around Obstacles
When encountering obstacles like doorways or pipes, measure and mark the flooring accordingly. Use a circular saw or jigsaw to cut the flooring to size, ensuring a snug fit.
For doorways, you may need to install transition strips to cover the gap between the flooring and the door frame. Measure and cut these strips to size, then secure them in place using screws or adhesive.
Finishing Up
Once you've laid the final row, allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. This usually takes around 24 hours.
After curing, remove the spacers and install any baseboards or skirting boards. Vacuum the flooring to remove any dust or debris, then enjoy your newly laid B&Q herringbone flooring!
