A Clockwork Orange Bedroom Scene

A scene from the film Clockwork Orange. The hyper-stylised film sets and furniture of A Clockwork Orange tell a story in their own right, acting as signifiers which portray a parallel narrative. I realise in my digging that, coincidentally, many of the pieces touch upon many of my personal interests: From mid century and retro-futuristic interior design and space age furniture, to Pop artists such as Allen Jones, Herman Makkink.

A Clockwork Orange was a box-office success, grossing $41 million in the United States and about $73 million overseas for a worldwide total of $114 million on a budget of $1.3 million. The film was also successful in the United Kingdom, playing for over a year at the Warner West End in London. In 1973, a new version of "A Clockwork Orange" was released to theaters with an MPAA rating of "R", replacing the previous "X".

The new version contained approximately 31 seconds of replacement, less lascivious footage for two scenes: the high speed (2 fps) orgy in Alex's bedroom, and the Ludovico rape scene. The bedroom scene was made more comical by having one of the girls fall off the bed. In his sex scene with the two women in his bedroom, Gioachino Rossini's "William Tell Overture" sets the pace for the sequence.

A Clockwork Orange uses music as a way of neutralizing otherwise provocative or shocking moments. These acts themselves then become a sort of dance cut to these classical pieces of music. He reportedly spent nearly one year in the preproduction phase of A Clockwork Orange, trying to find the perfect props, furniture, architecture, hairstyles, and locations.

Kubrick wanted to create a futuristic look in A Clockwork Orange but with the goal of making it appear that his dystopian future wasn't too far off.
