When it comes to fifth wheel towing, having the right hitch is crucial for a safe and smooth journey. But what about when you're not towing? Storing your fifth wheel hitch can be a challenge, especially if you're short on space. This is where a fifth wheel hitch storage skirt comes in handy. In this article, we'll explore what a fifth wheel hitch storage skirt is, its benefits, how to choose the right one, and some popular options on the market.
Understanding Fifth Wheel Hitch Storage Skirts
A fifth wheel hitch storage skirt, also known as a hitch cover, is a device designed to protect and store your fifth wheel hitch when it's not in use. It's typically made of durable materials like steel or heavy-duty plastic and is designed to fit over the hitch, keeping it clean, dry, and protected from the elements.
How Does a Fifth Wheel Hitch Storage Skirt Work?
A storage skirt is usually mounted on the back of your truck, covering the hitch. It's secured in place using bolts or other fasteners, ensuring it stays put even when driving at high speeds. When you need to use your hitch, simply remove the storage skirt, attach your fifth wheel trailer, and you're ready to go.
Benefits of Using a Fifth Wheel Hitch Storage Skirt
- Protection from the Elements: A storage skirt shields your hitch from rain, snow, and sun, preventing rust and other damage.
- Cleanliness: By keeping your hitch covered, a storage skirt prevents dirt, dust, and debris from accumulating, making it easier to clean and maintain.
- Safety: A storage skirt can help prevent accidents by reducing the risk of snagging or damaging other objects with your exposed hitch.
- Aesthetics: A well-designed storage skirt can enhance the appearance of your truck, giving it a more polished look.
Choosing the Right Fifth Wheel Hitch Storage Skirt
When selecting a fifth wheel hitch storage skirt, consider the following factors:
Compatibility
Ensure the storage skirt is compatible with your specific fifth wheel hitch and truck make and model. Check the manufacturer's specifications to avoid any potential issues.
Material and Durability
Opt for a storage skirt made of durable materials that can withstand the elements and regular use. Steel and heavy-duty plastic are popular choices.
Ease of Installation
Choose a storage skirt that's easy to install and remove. Some models come with pre-drilled holes for a quick and simple installation process.
Price
Storage skirts vary in price, so set a budget and compare options within that range. Keep in mind that a higher price doesn't always mean better quality.
