M272 Camshaft Adjuster Failure. The bolt that holds it is lh thread as is the bolt at the camshaft adjuster. My best guess is all the metal from the faulty balance shaft worked its way into these gears and effected them internally. For the exhaust cam you need to remove an air extractor in the rear of the camshaft. I have a 2006 c280 with a m272 engine. Apparently the part has been upgraded since the engines were new. The m272 camshaft adjuster is a known problem on these cars. It had the full camshaft repair and replacement of cogs in december 2011 presumably due to the well recognised fault with the m272. Recently i have had the balance shaft replaced. Mb in their wisdom modified the camshaft adjusters and the sensors to allow for bigger parameters, a cheap fix and the cel did not. Changing the cam adjustment gears seems to have fix this issue. It is also the same system on the m273 v8 engine. Now i got it back but. You can see it was necessary.
