Colored Shadows Experiment

This experiment is an example of additive color mixing, which means that you superimposed two or three beams of lights to mix them into a different color. Many television and computer monitors work that way to produce a variety of colors using only the primary colors red, blue and green. Colored Shadows Not all shadows are black.

When lights of different colors shine on the same spot on a white surface, the light reflecting from that spot to your eyes is called an additive mixture because it is the sum of all the light. We can learn about human color perception by using colored lights to make additive color mixtures. However, more impressively, the shadows were not black, but multi-colored.

This lead to lots of exploring with the lights and fun with contorting our hands to make interesting looking shadows. Before bedtime one night, we're going to hang a white sheet on the wall and make jumbo-sized multicolored shadows with our bodies! The Colored Shadows Interactive is shown in the iFrame below.

Learners explore human color perception by using colored lights to make additive color mixtures. With three colored lights, learners can make shadows of seven different colors. They can also explore how to make shadows of individual colors, including black.

In this demonstration, students experiment with red, green, and blue light to get different shadow colours. Primary colors are not a fundamental property of light but are related to the physiological response of the eye to light. Light is a continuous spectrum of all of the wavelengths that can be detected by the human eye.
