For 1988, BMW introduced an even more performance-focused variant of the E30 M3, the M3 Evolution II. This lightened and more powerful version of the M3 featured an uprated version of the S14 inline four engine that delivered 212hp to the rear wheels through a 5 speed manual transmission. Developed in-house by Munich's own BMW Motorsport division, the E30 M3 quickly climbed the ranks and earned its stripes after defeating its main competitors the Alfa Romeo 75 Turbo and the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16V (later) in WTCC in 1987 and DTM in both 1987 and 1989. The cylinder bore was increased to 95mm (from 84mm) and a long-stroke crank was added to boost displacement to 2,467cc (from 2,305). The E30 M3 received the 'Evo' treatment several times in its development.
